6 District heating and cooling District heating: 300 GW Share of the population served by district heating (2013) District cooling: 2.4 GW -Mostly France and Sweden -Often waste heat from industry/incinerators converted with heat driven sorption chillers and heat pumps -New: 'free cooling', cold from rivers, lakes and seas transported through pipes, directly or enhanced with heat pumps

9 Comprehensive assessments of the potential for the application of high-efficiency cogeneration and efficient district heating and cooling (Article 14 of the Efficiency Directive). Each EU Member State: Forecasts heating and cooling demand Maps heat and cool demand and surplus Establishes technical potential for efficient heating and cooling Assesses (societal) cost benefit of efficient heating and cooling options Follows up with dedicated policies if potential is identified.
