2 NMDC Limited Information on various environmental / green / sustainability initiatives Introduction to COP21 In 2015, France will be hosting and presiding the 21st Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP 21) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21/CMP11), otherwise known as Paris 2015 from November 30th to December 11th. COP21 will be a crucial conference, as it needs to achieve a new international agreement on the climate, applicable to all countries, with the aim of keeping global warming below 2 C. France will therefore be playing a leading international role to ensure points of view converge and to facilitate the search for consensus by the United Nations, as well as within the European Union, which has a major role in climate negotiations. COP 21 will be bringing together around 40,000 participants in total - delegates representing each country, observers, and civil society members. It is the largest diplomatic event ever hosted by France and one of the largest climate conferences ever organized. Introduction to Climate Change The race for unbridled economic growth has left the planet seriously depleted of environmental resources. The world s ecological footprint suggests that consumption of natural resources every year will be far more than the earth s capacity to regenerate. With increasing population, people will have access to limited resources which will be far less than what was available in India mirrors these environmental challenges. With over 17% of the world s population, India accounts for only 2.4% of the global land mass, 4% of the world s freshwater resources and 1% of the global forest resources. The impact of climate change is manifest in the changed weather patterns and increasing frequency of extreme weather conditions. Climate change and global warming have important ramifications for the NMDC and some of its major stakeholders. The conservation and management of India s depleting natural resources are very important as they directly impact the livelihood of its population and its workforce, who are dependent on natural resources excavation and related activities for their livelihood. It is clearly evident that the future competitiveness of companies will depend on their ability to adopt strategies for low carbon growth. Given the economic growth in the country, there has been a significant increase in the consumption of natural resources and an imperative need to ensure resource efficiency. NMDC being a responsible organization has always worked towards a low carbon environment where all stakeholders co-exist harmoniously

3 Climate Change Mitigation by NMDC NMDC has adopted the following strategies for climate change mitigation: 1. Identifying and evaluating climate change risks for each business. 2. Reduce the environmental impact of our processes, products and services and work towards creating a positive environmental footprint. 3. Adopt a low-carbon growth path through reduction in specific energy consumption and enhancing use of renewable energy sources. 4. Reduce specific water consumption on sites. Emission Intensity NMDC Ltd has undertaken Green House Gas accounting study for its major iron ore mining projects from the year onwards. 4 Specific Energy Consumption Specific energy consumption is 1.66 KHW / T. 5 Specific Effluent discharge There is no effluent discharge from NMDC mines PM emissions PM emissions are not Applicable as no process emissions are involved in the ore crushing and screening plants. However, ambient Air Quality monitoring for PM10 and PM2.5 is regularly carried out at all iron ore mining projects. The levels are found to be well within the range of 100 microgram/cu.m for PM10 and 60 microgram per cu.m for PM2.5 as prescribed by MoEF/CPCB Solid waste utilization The waste rock material incidental to mining operations is dumped at identified locations as per scheme of mining approved by IBM. Plantation / Greenery NMDC is participating in Harihar Chhattisgarh Road side tree Plantation programme drive and contributed Rs Cr and Cr during F.Y and respectively for undertaking 100-km roadside tree plantation programme every year. Renewable energy NMDC installed 10.5MW wind mill project in Karnataka state in Water recycling Water is recycled back into the Screening plant at Donimalai project. The thickeners have been installed for this purpose. Further, the clear water available at tailing dams is also re-cycled in the process Innovative waste management NMDC had identified the below methods for waste management Utilization of Kimberlite waste: A pilot plant for production of Zeolite-A, Sodium Silicate and ppt silica at R&D centre is under process. Making of Tiles from Lean grade iron ore: MoU is under progress for making bulk quantity of roof Tiles and pavement blocks.

6 Future Plan Development of an eco-friendly tailing disposal system by filtration of iron ore tailings and study of issues related to their transportation and storage is under progress. Studies of utilization of Dolo-char waste in iron ore sintering process to partially replace coke is under progress. Future plan / initiatives along with Goal /objective towards further improvement of all these parameters by next 10 years Disclosure of GHG emissions into Carbon Disclosure Project. Replacing of pumps with energy efficient pumps. To install capacitors at identified locations to improve PF and line losses. To replace existing probe start 4-- w MH Lamps with pulse start 320 MH lamps in mines and loading areas. To replace existing inefficient old repeated, rewound motors with energy efficient new EE1 motors at identified locations. Integrate and install online energy monitoring system and MD controller To provide occupancy controls in Admin buildings Installation of latest and modern sewage treatment plants at all township with an objective of re-use of treated water in process.
