1 Trump 1 Addison Trump Sentence Outline for Informative Speech CO215 Public Speaking Kevin Miller, Ph.D. Huntington University October 21, 2015 PREPARATION LIST Topic: The impact of social media and networking on employment opportunities General Purpose: To inform Specific Purpose: To inform my audience about the impact that social media and networking has on employment opportunities Thesis: The impact that networking or social media can have on employment opportunities within the labor market Outline Organization of Main Points: Problem-solution INTRODUCTION [Attention getter] Imagine, stepping off the elevator after spending the last hour on the 27 th floor interviewing for your dream job, discovering that you didn t get the position because of a post on your Facebook page that the human resource director considered not in line with the values of Bank of America. [Story: personal] [Audience connection] Whether you have interviewed for a job or not, you must be aware of the impact that your social profiles and other personal life activities can affect your

2 Trump 2 future job opportunities. In this speech, I hope to inform you about the current impact that social media has in the job market and how networking can benefit you in your search for a job. [Topic orientation step] The rise of social media in recent years is impacting employment opportunities. [Thesis] The impact that networking or social media can have on employment opportunities within the labor market has increased in recent years. [Preview step] First, we will take a look at the beginning of social media and its history to the present day. Next, we will talk about how social media can negatively affect employment opportunities. Finally, we will examine how both creating foundations of networking and using social media can be a crucial factor in your job search. BODY I. The beginning times of social media and its history to the present day. A. In the very beginning of social media, before the internet even started to explode into wide use, CompuServe was a social service site that began in the early 1970 s as a business-oriented network that allowed members to easily share files and access current news and events which was the first ever true interaction on the web. [Fact, Digital Trends] B. In 2002, 2003, and 2004 the uprising began when foundations such as Facebook, Myspace, Friendster, and LinkedIn started to boom. [Fact, Digital Trends] 1. In 2003, LinkedIn was created and took a more serious approach to the social networking phenomenon by creating a networking

3 Trump 3 resource for business people to connect with other professionals. [Fact, Digital Trends] 2. Most famously known, Facebook started up in 2004 as a Harvardonly campus exercise for social networking until it opened to the public two years later in [Fact, Digital Trends] i. Facebook, which was founded by current CEO Mark Zuckerberg, now is up to a staggering figure of 1.3 billion users today. [Fact, Digital Trends] 3. [Transparency #1, Example] As we can see by Social Times graphic, the evolution of social media history has increased drastically since the year it began in 1970 to present day (CompuServe to Facebook). [Transition] As we have seen the recent rise of social media in the pat 40 plus years, we will now take a more in depth look at how social media can negatively affect employment opportunities. II. The negative effects of social media on employment opportunities. A. In reality, some information on these sites is very private and not something that someone would want shared with their immediate family, a stranger, and most certainly not a professional hiring manager. 1. According to a July 2006 survey by the U.S. National Association of Colleges and Employers, 27% of employers have Googled their job candidates or checked their profiles on social networking sites. [Statistic, Ethica Publishing]

4 Trump 4 2. Provocative photos, posts displaying discriminatory comments, and profiles displaying poor communication skills can influence future employment opportunities. [Fact, Forbes] 3. Job seekers who are silent or invisible online may be at a disadvantage due to a lack of engagement on social media. [Fact, Forbes] [Transition] As we have now looked more into the negative effects of social media sites and their impact on employment within the job market, we can now dive into how both creating foundations of networking and using social media can be a crucial factor in your job search. III. The benefits of both creating foundations of networking and using social media can be a crucial factor in your job search. A. In the market today jobs are easy to apply for, but the odds of actually securing the position is significantly reduced because of all the other applicants applying for the same position. 1. According to research by Laura A. Owens and Patrick Young of the Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation, 60-75% of job openings are never advertised publicly but are found through the hidden job market. [Fact, Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation] 2. Job developers and seekers must put energy into networking in order to become more effective. 3. Networking by definition is an arrangement of people crossed at regular intervals by other people, all of whom are cultivating

5 Trump 5 mutually beneficial, give-and take, win-win relationships. [Definition, Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation] B. The foundation of networking is based on the saying it s not what you know but who you know. 1. The best place to begin developing contacts is through family, friends, neighbors, and co-workers. 2. The average person knows about 250 people that could be added to their network and help them find a job. [Fact, Journal of Vocational Rehabilitation] 3. Finally, the last important step in the success of networking is to find a referral or someone to recommend you for a position. C. There are also many positive synergies between the job market and using social media as a means to network professionally. 1. Building strong social networks and creating online profiles that represent your skills and expertise has significant importance. 2. Viewing potential employers social media sites and specifically hiring manager s profile page can allow discovery of what they are looking for in a candidate. [Fact, Forbes] CONCLUSION Social media has been on the up rise since the early 1970 s and is still growing at a rapid pace. It is important to make sure that your social profile and other contacts in your life are up to the standards of the business world. If not, you might one day find yourself in a not so good situation.
