What is an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships give young people and adults the chance to be employed and paid while gaining a nationally recognised qualification along the way, giving them a fantastic head start to their career. They are also a great alternative to A levels and university, with people building their careers through the Apprenticeship route more likely to stay in work throughout their life. Key benefits include: Earning a salary Getting paid holidays Receiving training Gaining qualifications Learning job-specific skills At Capel Manor we offer two levels of apprenticeships - Intermediate (Level 2) and Advanced (Level 3). As an apprentice you will complete: An accredited competence work-based qualification A knowledge-based technical certificate Functional Skills in English and maths An Employee Rights and Responsibilities workbook Personal Learning and Thinking skills Apprenticeships come at three levels: Intermediate (equivalent to five A*-C GCSEs), Advanced (equivalent to two A Levels) and Higher (equivalent to a foundation degree). Higher Apprenticeships, equivalent to bachelors and masters degrees, are becoming increasingly available in a number of areas. Apprenticeships give young people and adults the chance to be employed 2 Capel Manor College
Why choose an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships offer the opportunity to earn whilst you learn - combining high quality college training whilst working in a real job. The longterm benefits of an apprenticeship show that after completing an Apprenticeship 85% of apprentices will stay in employment and 64% will stay with the same employer. Earn while you learn Enjoy the benefits of a regular income whilst gaining college training underpinned by expertise and experience from working within the industry A real job Learn the practical and theoretical skills required for your industry. All apprentices work at least 30 hours a week A real qualification Quality is key to Apprenticeships. All Apprenticeships are at least 12 months long and lead to a national qualification that is respected by employers around the world A real future Our programmes are recognised and endorsed by leading employers in the land-based sector. Working closely with employers we can help signpost students to vacancies, helping you to achieve faster career progression Apprenticeships offer the opportunity to earn whilst you learn Apprenticeship Guide 3
Who can become an apprentice? Anyone over the age of 16 can study towards an Apprenticeship, although some eligibility rules do apply: You must have lived in the EU for three years You must not have a level 4 (degree equivalent) qualification or above You must have a contract of employment for a minimum of 30 hours a week that includes time at college Anyone over the age of 16 can study towards an Apprenticeship How will I learn? Apprentices learn through a mixture of college study and onthe-job training. Depending on the Apprenticeship you choose, you may attend college one day a week or on a block release basis. College training is designed to introduce new skills and provide you with theoretical knowledge. You will be expected to build on these skills by gaining real experience in the workplace. Throughout your Apprenticeship you will create a portfolio of evidence, which is used to show that you are applying your knowledge in the workplace. Your work-based assessor will also visit you on a regular basis to carry out assessments at your worksite, which is an important part of ensuring your portfolio of work meets the required standards. 4 Capel Manor College
How long does an Apprenticeship last? An Apprenticeship can take between 1 and 2 years to complete, depending on the level of study. As a guide, an Intermediate Level 2 Apprenticeship usually takes between 12 to 18 months to complete, whilst an Advanced Level 3 Apprenticeship is around 24 months. Where will my Apprenticeship take me? Apprenticeships can be demanding but they are very rewarding. Because Apprenticeships train apprentices in the skills employers want, they give you choices in your career. When you ve finished you can carry on working, maybe get promoted or go on to higher education in a college or university. As our student success stories show an Apprenticeship can open up lots of different career pathways. Our Advanced level programmes build on the skills gained at Intermediate level and are devised to encourage apprentices to take on more responsibility within the work-place, working at a more supervisory level. Apprenticeships can be demanding but they are very rewarding Apprenticeship Guide 5
Our apprentices - their words We ve helped a lot of people kick-start their careers with an Apprenticeship. Here s what a few of them have to say about how an Apprenticeship has changed their lives. Michael Voller, 20, apprentice at Capel Manor Gardens After three years as an apprentice I gained full-time employment maintaining the gardens at Tottenham Hotspur s training ground, in Enfield. Capel Manor is the ideal place to train. You get to work on the gardens throughout the seasons and with lots of different tools and machinery. Because of the Apprenticeship scheme I now have a whole career mapped out. Guy Edmunds, 24, apprentice Tree Surgeon at Harrow School On finishing school I knew I didn t want to do anything academic or a job where I would end up sitting behind a desk. The Apprenticeship programme was perfect. Working and training is exactly what I was looking for plus I m earning a regular income. Working as a tree surgeon really pushes me to my limits. 6 Capel Manor College
Matthew Ogunmokun, 20, Trees & Timber apprentice at City Suburban As a novice to Arboriculture it was initially a little daunting becoming an apprentice. It was all very new but combining work with college has given me the confidence to do my job properly and to the standards required by the industry. Capel Manor has encouraged and supported me every step of the way. Tom Church, 20, Production Horticulture apprentice, Forty Hall Farm I left school not knowing what I wanted to do but I have always been fascinated by working outdoors. With the Apprenticeship I learn so much better and the theory side of my training solidifies what I learn at work. I feel like a valued member of staff and I am continually acknowledged for my work. Charlotte Culling, 19, Animal Care apprentice at London Zoo The Apprenticeship felt like a step up from staying on at of college and I felt ready for work. I have lots of responsibility in my job, for the lives and well-being of the animals I am assigned to. At the Zoo you work on a rotation and so far I ve worked with lots of mammals and in the aquarium. To read more of our apprentices stories visit Apprenticeship Guide 7

The College is also equipped with wide-ranging plant collections, design studios and specialist tools and machinery
What do employers think about our Apprenticeships? Employers think that qualified apprentices are 15% more employable than those with other qualifications. Our Employer Services team works with a range of leading land-based employers. This is what they say about our Apprenticeships: We have taken on two apprentices; both are a huge asset to our team at the Farm. They are hard-working, reliable and a pleasure to have as colleagues. I would recommend the Apprenticeship programme to all small businesses and employers. Kate McGeevor, Forty Hall Farm The Apprenticeship programme has enabled us to put something back into the industry. We have an ageing workforce so we need to ensure that the skills levels are maintained within it. Martin Haskell, London Borough of Havering The Apprenticeship programme ensures that our new employees have a commitment to the company. Current industry techniques are taught and therefore brought into the work-place. The programmes also enable current employees to share their knowledge and experience. Steve Venables, Principal Trees I believe the Apprenticeship programme benefits both the apprentice and the employer. The apprentice gains knowledge, skills and experience and the employer can shape the apprentice to the company s standards and procedures; producing a tailor-made qualified employee. Simon Lant, City Suburban Group Apprenticeship Guide 9
How much does it cost? As an apprentice you don t have to pay anything towards the cost of your training. However, depending on your age, your employer may be required to make a contribution towards the cost of your college training. Here s how it works: Apprentices aged 16 to 18 there are no fees For apprentices aged 19+ an employer contribution is required to cover the cost of the course If you are aged 24 or above and undertaking a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship, the course can be funded with a 24 plus Advanced Learning Loan For details of current Apprenticeship employer fees, ring Employer Services on ext 1160 or 1164 or apprenticeships@capel.ac.uk How much will I get paid? The minimum salary for an apprentice is: Aged 16 to 18 - Apprentice National Minimum Wage Aged Apprentice National Minimum Wage for the first year of your Apprenticeship and then onto the National Minimum Wage 10 Capel Manor College Often employers will pay above this minimum rate but the wages generally reflect the fact that you are in training; it is unlikely that you ll be earning the same wage as your colleagues who are already qualified. For full details on the current Apprentice National Minimum Wage rate take a look at
