4 Festo Saving You Time & Money Example A company producing components for a car using an assembly machine in its process has an hourly production cost as follows: Product produced per hour = 120 units Cost of incoming components = 20 per unit Price of processed product = 32 per unit Value added by processing = 12 per unit The assembly machine is complex and contains a number of pneumatic cylinders, which are controlled using electro-pneumatic valves. Its main control source is a Programmable Logic Controller and signals are returned by means of reed switches mounted to the cylinder profiles. If the machine were to breakdown for one hour, the loss of production would cost: 120 units X 12 = 1440 By training the maintenance staff in electro pneumatic control the breakdown source was located quicker and reduced the standard breakdown period by 10 minutes. This amounts to a cost saving of: 120 units per 60 minutes equates to 2 units per minute 10 minutes equates to per unit Total Profit Saving = 240 The company typically had an average of 2 breakdowns per week, which equates to: 240 X 2 breakdowns = 480 per week saving The company had trained the Maintenance Engineer on an 'EP211 - Introduction to Electro- Pneumatics' course by Festo Didactic and the cost of this was 1220 for a 3.5-day course. Therefore the pay back period equates to: 1220 / 480 = 2.5 weeks
