1 RESUME PREPARATION PACKET This packet of information is designed to assist with your resume preparation. As you work through the different steps list your skills on a separate sheet of paper and write an example to show that you possess the skill. Once you have identified all of your skills you will transfer your top skills to the resume information sheet at the back of this packet which was designed to help you organize your information prior to writing your resume. Important: Keep your original sheet of paper with all skills listed to use when customizing your resume/cover letter to match an employer s key requirements, completing a job application or when preparing for the interview. Step 1: Job Related Skills. Employers are interested in your on the job skills. The resume, job application and interview process will all need to reflect the skills you have gained through work experience, be it paid work, volunteer work or even work skills developed and sharpened at home. Review the Job skilled listed as a starting point for deciding the skills you will display on our resume, job application and verbally during the interview. The following list identifies job related skills categorized by general occupations. The list provides a starting point for deciding the skills you will display on your resume, job application and verbalize during the interview process. Take some time to read through the list below and identify those skills which you possess. 4 Step 2: Self Management Skills Self-management skills also referred to as adaptive skills, help employers determine if your personality will blend with the company and co-workers. Self-management skills allow you to determine if a specific kind of work fits your nature. An employer needs to know that you can adapt to the company s needs and to the company s customers. The importance of understanding your adaptive skills are critical to success in the workplace. Employers can train people to do the work. They cannot train people to like the work, have a good attitude, to learn new things on their own, to get along with co-workers and supervisors, to have good attendance, to be dependable or energetic, or to show up to work on time every day. The following list identifies a variety of self-management skills. Place a check mark next to all of the self-management skills you believe you display on a consistent basis either at work, with friends, or at home. Next, circle 15 skills you believe are your strongest. Now list the 15 circled words on a separate sheet of paper and write an example to show that you possess the skill. These will be transferable skills you will want to feature in interview responses and on your resume and application. 4

6 Step 3: Transferable Skills Transferable skills are also referred to as hire me skills since every employer desires them. They are skills that transfer from one type of work to another. Most adults have actually developed between specific skills. Unfortunately job seekers are only able to discuss 5-8 during an interview. This exercise will help in identifying the transferable skills you have which are sought most by employers. Being able to identify your skills will enhance your resumes and applications and increase your effectiveness during the job interview process. Based on your work experience, volunteer experience, military experience, educational experience, check all the skills that apply. Next, circle 15 skills you believe are you strongest. 9 Step 4: Qualifications The qualifications section of the resume provides you the opportunity to show the employer how your skills and talents meet their 3-5 key requirements. Expand on your skills and provide numbers or show how often you performed the task. Think in terms of what tasks you have done in your previous jobs that would match with the skills needed for the position you are applying for. Give a brief explanation of how you used those specific skills. In other words, prove your skills. EXAMPLES: Supervisory Skill Trained and supervised a staff of ten in all phases of warehouse procedures including shipping, receiving and verifying records. Cashier Skills Handled up to $2000 in daily sales with 100% till accuracy Construction Three years of experience operating a variety of heavy equipment including ditch witch, backhoe and front loader. To Quantify Excellent Problem Solving Skills Quickly identified issues, investigated complaints and was able to save the company $100,000 in late fees. To Quantify Works Well Under Pressure Possess the ability to handle stress, be flexible and calm under pressure and met 100% of my deadlines with high quality reports. If you have training or experience in similar job related areas, you could include them in one statement of your qualifications. 9
