15 Language ability for permanent staff, contract staff and trainees Perfect command of main language/mother tongue, which must be an EU official language Very sound knowledge of a first source language, must be an EU official language Very sound knowledge of a second source language, must be an EU official language No language certificate required! 16 Permanent staff: basic criteria You must be an EU citizen You need a bachelor's degree in any subject Translator: no master's degree required Interpreter: conference interpreting master's No professional experience is required

17 Permanent staff member: recruitment procedure Permanent staff are taken on through a two-stage procedure: selection followed by recruitment. The selection phase is an open competition: an EU civil service exam lasting around 9 months. Applicants take a series of tests to determine the best candidates, who are placed on a reserve list. Second, in the recruitment phase, managers seeking new staff choose candidates from the reserve list. Entire process managed through

18 Practical language test Translation: - text from each of 2 source languages into main language - one hour to translate 45 lines, on PC, dictionaries allowed! Summer 2017: tests for translators into FR, DE, IT and NL Next tests for translators into EN: summer 2018? Interpreting: - consecutive speech of 5-6 mins, live speaker, no breaks - simultaneous speech of minutes, video recording

19 What managers are looking for Knowledge of EU deficit languages, at any level: we will help you build on it Translation/interpreting qualifications and experience Specialist knowledge of EU-related policy areas Knowledge of other world languages: we don't translate/interpret much but it indicates linguistic ability
