1 Master Block Week The Block Week is a joint activity of Master level students from Ruhr Master School ( FH Dortmund, HS Bochum and DAAD EuroPIM ( It is organized by the programmes: Master Elektromobilität (HS Bochum) Master Geoinformatik (HS Bochum) Master Angewandte Nachhaltigkeit (HS Bochum) European Master in Project Management (EuroMPM, FH Dortmund) Master Embedded Systems for Mechatronics (FH Dortmund) Master Informatik (FH Dortmund) Students will work on a real world case study in the field of engineering, project management and business development The block week takes place in Dortmund, Nov 20 Nov 24, 2017 Case Studies are selected from ruhrvalley: Block week registration is with: europim@fh-dortmund.de until Oct 29 th. 1

3 emobility case study The emergence of emobility suffers a typical problem of any business which requires a new infrastructure to be able to prosper: ecars are not attractive to customers if charging is a hassle: ecars have a limited battery capacity. They need a dense network of charging points where the battery can be charged. This needs to be fast, reliable and with reasonable cost. In an area without a developed charging infrastructure customers hesitate to invest into ecars. Ruhr Valley as a wide spread but highly populated metropolitan area should be a good place to develop such an charging infrastructure. Still, it happens only very slowly. Why? Putting charging points is a risky endeavor if it is not clear if they are really used: The charging infrastructure which exists by today is very heterogeneous and either installed by public or semi-public organization or rather randomly by pilot projects or enthusiasts. This makes it difficult for car owners to find charging stations. Furthermore, sustainable business models for operating a charging infrastructure are rare. Charging at home seems to be the predominant pattern. Why does nobody invest into a charging infrastructure? The underlying issues are very versatile and come from technology, business and economics, politics and the regulatory environment. During the Master block week we want to investigate the issues from different angles and try to develop plans for developing a sustainable path for emobility in the Ruhr Valley. The topics involve internet & literature research, technology research, business process and market analysis and consideration of best practices and experience reports. 3
