Basic Training transforms a civilian mind set into a warrior mind set. o Intense, prolonged, severe conditioning of the whole person. o Strong, ritual aspects o Focused group bonding Task and social cohesion (No man/woman left behind) o Emphasizes positive moral code Honor, integrity, obedience to authority, courage

19 How are we Wired? (Cont) Military Training is Thorough o How do we prove that the training works? o Survival is the proof Failure has life or death consequences Failure doesn t only have the potential to affect the individual, but also the unit as a whole.

20 Social vs Task Cohesion How many of you spend personal time with your co-workers / team members? o Lunch, drinks after work, concerts, picnics, etc. Military Task Cohesion o Training o Being Deployed o Being on a Mission o Being in a Firefight PM Task Cohesion o Training (Tried and True) o Project Assignment o Scope, Schedule, Budget o Risks and Issues

21 Project Recommendations Make sure your eyes are WIDE open o Don t be shy or naive o Ask questions of sponsor to set proper expectations. o Ask your self a simple question. Can I do this? o And the answer is always

22 Personnel Recommendations As PM s we are not often given the option of picking our teams, we inherit them. So what do we do? o First things first, assess the situation. o Ask questions, lots of questions o Learn more about your team, what makes them tick?

24 Summary Remember your training o Revisit tried and true tactics that have garnered success o Evolve and learn new tactics o Don t get comfortable (Develop a Project Roadmap Strategy, but don t be afraid to morph as needed) Believe in your team o Take steps to develop trust o Empower team members to succeed (Micro Management is Death) Communicate, communicate, communicate
