Titel der Investigation of the significance of different intervention strategies on the planning of interventions on water distribution networks Sean Kerwin Prof. Dr. Bryan T. Adey Water managers are responsible for the operation and maintenance of water distribution networks to ensure that an adequate level of service is continuously provided. These networks are among the most important assets of municipalities. Their maintenance, however, can accrue significant costs and negatively affect the public. Although, water managers know in general which interventions strategies should be followed to ensure that a network provides an adequate level of service, the vast number of ways these can be combined into intervention programs along with the added political pressure to reduce maintenance costs results in a complex intervention planning process. To ensure that this task is done optimally, i.e. with the lowest overall costs including those due to maintenance and operation, production, storage and distribution, optimal intervention programs must be developed, i.e. the list of preventive interventions to be executed within a given timeframe that results in the maximum net benefit to the stakeholders, while not violating operational or financial constraints. In this project, the student will use an existing risk-based methodology and software developed to determine optimal intervention programs for a water distribution network in a Swiss city to investigate the effect of: 1) changing the values of items in the cost structure on the optimal intervention programs, 2) changing intervention strategies on individual objects on the optimal intervention programs, and 3) changing the budgets allocated to each type of object in the networks in the determination of the optimal intervention program. nfrastructure Management 1: Process, discussion with Sean Kerwin 2
Approval of Sean Kerwin is required before being allowed to register. 3
Titel der Evaluation of the flexibility in the design of civil infrastructure Dr. Claudio Martani Prof. Dr. Bryan T. Adey As the future is uncertain so are our needs for infrastructure. In this project the student will make an assessment of how needs for a specific type of infrastructure, e.g. road, or rail infrastructure, might change in the future and devise a plan of how to the current infrastructure should be adapted. For instance if the future evolution of the traffic on an highway is uncertain, how shall I dimension my bridges over that line? (i) for the current needs, risking that this becomes obsolate soon, requiring to demolish and rebuilt these; (ii) for the maximum expected needs, risking to waste the capital of the investment if this will never occur; or (iii) flexible (i.e. limited but easiliy expandeable). This depend on the tradeoff between costs of implementing the alternatives and the uncertainty that can be modelled on the tiggering factors influencig the traffic evolution. The work will involve the following tasks 1) assess the level of service being provided, 2) identify key parameters related to the level of service that can be measured, 3) analyse the past evolution of the values of these parameters, 4) analyse the changes in past trends, 5) develop models to predict likely future changes, 6) develop a model of how the infrastructure provides the level of service, and 7) how it changes over time, 8) list possible ways of how the infrastructure could be changed, and 9) devise a plan of how to develop the infrastructure. In this project the student is expected to learn how to estimate the business case of including future options while intervening on an infrastructure, based on a set of uncertain elements that can affect the infrastructure needs in the long term. (i) Infrastructure management 1. (ii) Comfort working in with relatively vague situations and love for bringing clarity to them. 4
This work is to be done in English. Approval of Dr. Martani is required before being allowed to register. 5
Titel der Investigation of the significance of different intervention strategies on the planning of interventions in urban areas C. Kielhauser Prof. Dr. B.T. Adey One of the main difficulties of an infrastructure manager is to determine how to, with a given budget, intervene on infrastructure to ensure that an adequate level of service is provided to the public. This, of course, requires a sound assessment of the infrastructure network itself, as well as the effects caused by interventions to the infrastructure network itself, but also to other infrastructure networks. Recently a methodology has been developed to assess the level of service that is provided, taking into account the intervention strategies of the infrastructure manager, the deterioration behavior of infrastructure objects and the interactions between different infrastructure networks caused by both failures and interventions. This methodology is based genetic algorithms, a metaheuristic evolutionary procedure that is used to investigate very large optimization problems. In this project, the student will use the existing methodology and software developed to determine optimal intervention programs for five infrastructure networks in the city of Uster to investigate the effect of 1) changing intervention strategies on each of the five networks on the optimal intervention programs, and 2) changing the budgets allocated to each of the five networks in the determination of the optimal intervention program. Infrastructure management 1, Interest in working interdisciplinary, Ability to work with GIS and R 6
Titel der Prioritization of school buildings for strengthening against natural hazards Juan Carlos Lam Prof. Dr. Bryan T. Adey In this project, the student will develop a conceptual framework to prioritize school strengthening interventions against natural hazards (e.g., earthquakes, floods, landslides). Such a framework will need to build on previous work found through a literature review, and it will be designed to address the present challenges (i.e., use cases) faced by school infrastructure managers throughout the world. Ideally, the proposed framework would consider: (i) a vulnerability classification for school buildings given a particular hazard, (ii) of service, (iii) the impact of probable damages on the level a cost structure to estimate consequences, (iv) the implications of the spatial distribution of school buildings, (v) a classification of the different possible types of strengthening interventions, (vi) a method to evaluate the effectiveness of strengthening interventions, and (vii) a method to prioritize interventions. The student will apply the framework to a toy example (also, to be developed as part of this project) to model the prioritization of interventions. Infrastructure Management 1 7

Titel der Estimating the resilience of a transportation network to heavy rains through stress tests J. Hackl (hackl@ibi.baug.ethz.ch) Prof. Dr. Bryan T. Adey (adey@ibi.baug.ethz.ch) In this project the student will use an existing methodology and software developed for the region of Chur to estimate the resilience of the road network in Chur and to investigate possible stress tests to be used to estimate resilience. The main taks of the project are: (1) Extend and apply the software, and (2) Simulation, validation and discussion. The student will get a better understanding of software development and the estimation of resilience of road networks. Infrastructure management 1, additionally: knowledge of Python and GIS is necessary 9
Titel der Estimation of the appropriate probabilistic models to be used to model state changes road sections Dr. Craig Richmond Prof. Dr. Bryan T. Adey The determination of optimal intervention strategies and optimal intervention programs requires the modelling of the probability of failure of the obejcts over time. Although many people appropximate these distributions for their calculations, very few people have actually had the available data to determine the distributions that should be used. Doing so would be a big benefit to infrastructure managers. In this project, the student will estimate the probabilistic disributions to be used to determine optimal intervention strategies for road sections using a large existing data set. The project will involve simulations of the deterioration of road sections, comparing the deterioration with actual data and determining best fit probabilistic distributions. IM1 The emphasis will be placed on simulation as an investigative tool 10
