2 History of the Classified Staff Advisory Council The Classified Staff Advisory Council was formed during the school year to more fully integrate classified employees into the district s strategic plan and objectives. Classified staff comprise approximately 49 percent of the district s 4,202 employees. Members representing the majority of classified employee positions from geographically distributed buildings were recruited, and meetings began Nov. 30, The superintendent attends two-to-four meetings a year. Mission Statement, Objectives The purpose of the Council is to provide a communication vehicle for classified staff; to advocate for inclusion and integration of classified staff into the district s planning processes; and to support leadership opportunities for classified staff. The primary objectives of the Council are: To promote awareness of and alignment with the district s mission, goals and objectives among classified staff; To provide a channel for classified staff to contribute ideas and suggestions for improvement of district operations, classified employee policies and professional development; to share concerns; and to address issues that impact classified staff; To provide meaningful opportunities for classified staff to participate in district planning, helping to focus all the district s resources on key issues. Name: Ed Calvert Years I ve worked for the district: 12 Job Title: Production Printer, Graphic Communications Department Main Job Responsibility: I print one and two color jobs on an offset press that come into the print shop. Part of that responsibility is to proof each job to make sure it s accurate. For example, does the job line up correctly, does the color match what the customer needs, and finally are there any glaring issues to correct. Checking supplies is required to make sure we have enough paper, envelopes, ink and chemicals to get the work out quickly. I m also responsible for padding and cutting down jobs on the large paper cutter and/ or using the three-hole paper drill. Why I like my job: I like my job because of all the good people we have in the print shop and at the district buildings. Everybody looks out for each other. How we can make schools great for every child: By making every child feel like they make a difference in the class rooms. In the spotlight Name: Jerry Adams Years I ve worked for the district: 12 Job Title: Lead custodian, Scarborough Elementary School Main Job Responsibility: Keeping everybody happy! Why I like my job: I like my job because the kids, parents and staff are all great people. How we can make schools great for every child: Keep up the great work you re doing! -2-
3 Who Are We? Classified employees are caring, committed professionals who keep the schools running by performing essential jobs that help students learn. They include administrative and clerical support staff, paraeducators, custodians, bus aides, food service professionals, maintenance and landscape technicians, engineers and skilled craftsmen, business, finance, accounting and communications professionals, and many more. The contributions of classified employees throughout the district provide the foundation for making our schools, offices and facilities operate efficiently, effectively and safely. 39 percent of us work full time, and 61 percent are part-time 82 percent work in the schools, and 18 percent work in central office and support buildings Our average age is 46 and average length of employment is 9 years 29 percent of us have bachelor s degrees, 5 percent have master s degrees, and another 43 percent have attended college 82 percent of us are women, and 18 percent men More than 63 percent of us live in the district 41 percent of us work in special education 7 percent provide clerical services 14 percent provide custodial/maintenance services 13 percent work in food service 2 percent work in technology Our Workplace Conditions and Issues According to the Employee Climate Survey: 88 percent of us are satisfied with our jobs, and 93 percent are proud to say we work for the district, 64 percent know the parts of the district s plans that affect us and our work; 59 percent say the district asks for our ideas when planning for the future, 80 percent are satisfied with the job training opportunities provided to us, 74 percent say we have enough time to do what is expected of us, compared with only 44 percent of certified staff, 92 percent say our work environment is safe and secure. -3-
4 CSAC Benefits Classified Staff! Since its inception in 2005, CSAC has successfully supported: The implementation of health insurance for part-time employees, Increased inclusion of classified staff members in the district s decision-making process, Improvement of employee climate survey questions to more accurately measure and address classified staff work condition concerns, Improved benefits for classified staff, such as reducing the number of sick days needed to convert to health insurance coverage after retirement. Committees To accomplish some of its work, CSAC members have created three standing subcommittees: Communication, Membership, and Social/Recognition. Committee responsibilities are: Communication Produce the Classified Staff Annual Report Create and support the CSAC web site Work with Building Reps to improve communication in the buildings Membership Create a consistent process for identifying and inducting new members Create membership notebooks and orientation for new members Track meeting attendance Promote broad representation on the council Name: Jane Jones Years I ve worked for the district: 28 Social/Recognition Organize the fall kick-off meeting and spring luncheon Classified staff recognitions Job Title: Administrative Secretary, Pioneer Trail Middle School Main Job Responsibility: Principal s Secretary and Bookkeeper. Why I like my job: It s something different every day and I enjoy my contact with students, parents & staff. How we can make schools great for every child: Continue to hire and maintain excellent staff starting with administrators, teachers and support staff. Our staff really cares about kids! 5 Accomplishments Created and disseminated an annual report to all classified staff, district leadership and the Board of Education Maintained the CSAC Web site Maintained Building Reps in every district building to facilitate communication between classified staff and the council Maintained member notebooks with materials including: member contact list, by-laws, action plans, meeting code of conduct, communication flowcharts, communication strategy, etc. Published monthly CSAC Update newsletter for classified staff Met with Building Reps to discuss ways to improve communication Established a self-nomination application process to become a member of CSAC Established a Steering committee which met regularly Name: Leah Hargis Years I ve worked for the district: 15 Job Title: Administrative Assistant, Central Elementary School Main Job Responsibility: To support the principal and staff through various clerical and administrative duties in an effort to create the most favorable learning environment for the students. Why I like my job: I enjoy doing a variety of different things and working with the Central Elementary staff. How we can make schools great for every child: By making every student feel important and most of all enthusiastic about learning. In the spotlight Name: Maureen Hurd Years I ve worked for the district: Five Job Title: Computer Lab Associate, Cedar Creek Elementary Main Job Responsibility: I teach the CLA curriculum to K-5 students and provide building technology support. Why I like my job: I love working with my students and knowing that the important skills I am teaching them will be used throughout their lives. How we can make schools great for every child: By providing various opportunities for our children to grow and learn. Technology is one area that can provide those opportunities for growth. -5-
6 Membership List Membership includes both supervisory and non-supervisory representatives drawn from all functional areas of classified staff, although not all groups are represented every year. Classified groups includes paraeducators, custodians, secretarial/clerical, food service, business, technology, operations, human resources, computer lab associates, library clerks, school aides, wellness, communications and student development. 7 Membership Responsibilities Classified Staff Council representatives are responsible for: attending meetings and helping with the work of the Council, gathering input and feedback from their functional area of the district as needed and sharing that with the Council, providing monthly reports on issues, initiatives, etc. to the Quality Council, and working to reach consensus and promote the goals and strategic directions set by the Board of Education, in keeping with the Staff Guiding Principles Children First, Quality and Excellence, Teamwork, Commitment to Individual Needs, and Respect for All. Building Rep Responsibilities Building Reps are welcome to attend monthly CSAC meetings if they wish; however, this is not required. Building Reps are responsible for: Sharing notes from the meetings with classified staff in their building Gathering questions, concerns, and feedback from classified staff in their building and forwarding to CSAC Helping to conduct surveys as needed Promoting CSAC How to Join CSAC Information about membership applications is sent to all classified employees in the spring of each year. You may also contact Dr. Lloyd Letcher, Director of Classified Personnel. Learning Opportunities Nine hundred forty-eight classified staff took part in professional development during the school year. The learning opportunities offered to classified staff included classes on technology, special education, leadership, customer service, diversity, public speaking, CPR, First Aid, and crisis management. -6-
