August Monthly LASHRM Program by Amy Bettis, LASHRM Communication Coordinator Approximately $80 million is spent on housing criminals each year in Wisconsin. Of those Wisconsin inmates, many are repeat offenders. Project proven is making a local effort to break that vicious cycle (Schmidt 2016 Apr 26). Project Proven Coordinator, Tonya Van Tol will provide insights and information on WTC s re-entry services for incarcerated youth and adults. Project Proven provides adult education, basic literacy, and GED services to individuals held in area detention centers. The services are provided in collaboration with jail staff at the County of La Crosse. Participants in Project proven work closely with local law enforcement officials and agencies to provide instruction and services to formerly incarcerated individuals to help increase the likelihood of a successful transition from jail into the community. Project Proven was created at Western Technical College. It's been offered in La Crosse since 2013 but recently got a boost from the federal government through grants. To date, Project Proven has helped more than 500 people with a criminal history ease back into society and become productive citizens (Schmidt, 2016 Apr 26). 2 LASHRM 2017 Membership Drive by Karissa Wirt, LASHRM VP of Membership The La Crosse Area Society of Human Resource Management is kicking off its 2017 Membership Drive! H HR Professionals and business leaders are cordially invited to join our LASHRM chapter! Members benefit from local professional development opportunities, business resources, and HR networking. LASHRM Membership Benefits and National SHRM Membership Benefits What is 2017 Membership Drive?! It s the best time of the year for new HR professionals to join our local LASHRM chapter and the National SHRM organization! It is also a great time for local members to take the next step and advance their SHRM membership and to become a National member, if not already one. Individuals who join the La Crosse Area SHRM chapter now will receive 18 months of membership for the price of 12 months (A savings of $30.00)! As a part of this deal, new LASHRM members will receive a $50 gift card from the LASHRM chapter for joining during the Membership Drive. Additionally, any local SHRM member who also registers as a National SHRM member will be eligible to receive a $50 reimbursement from the LASHRM chapter. Join Now to receive a discount! If that isn t enough, there is a third way to earn perks, through a referral bonus. The LASHRM board will award a $50 gift card (limit one per member) for those members in good standing who refer a new applicant to LASHRM that results in a paid registration for a new LASHRM membership. 3 2017 Membership Appreciation Event All Glazed Up by Tracy Schams, LASHRM Past President Many Thanks to our awesome members for participating in LASHRM's annual Member Appreciation event. It was a great success! Below are a few photos from the day we have quite a talented group! We are hoping to get everyone their finished coffee mugs at our August meeting. Be on the lookout! Plans are currently underway for next year s event. Any ideas? Please let us know! DON T FORGET Registration is Open WISHRM 2017 State Conference, Wisconsin Dells, WI Forty (40) of our 159 current members have registered to attend the WI SHRM conference this October. That means 25% of our membership registered before the July 31, deadline. Let s keep that number climbing even higher. The next registration deadline is September 15 th the price jumps $30 from the early bird deadline for both SHRM and non-shrm members. If you procrastinate until after the 15 th registration costs jump another $30. Let s see if we can get another 40 members to register by September 15 th!
4 WISHRM Certification Scholarship Winner by Sheree Yates, WISHRM Certification Director and Deanna Kabliska, LASHRM Certification Chair The Wisconsin SHRM State Council Certification Scholarship, worth $750, is awarded to one SHRM national member who lives or works in the State of Wisconsin and who is preparing to sit for the SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP certification exam. This year, the WISHRM State Council is pleased to congratulate Stephanie Klomsten as the 2017 Wisconsin SHRM State Council Certification Scholarship winner. Stephanie is an HR professional from Milwaukee area and is a member of SHRM. We wish Stephanie the best of luck on her journey to professional certification. In addition to this Wisconsin-only certification scholarship, SHRM members are also eligible for one of the other hundreds of SHRM scholarships available to HR professionals and students pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees, SHRM certification, and professional development. The next SHRM Foundation Certification Scholarships window runs from July 1 - October 10. Applicants will be notified in December SHRM professional chapters and state councils are eligible to compete for the certification scholarship to fund programs that promote HR certification. - See more at: La Crosse s next Certification Study Group will begin Wednesday, September 20 at Western Technical College. The self study group will meet for 11 weeks this fall ending December 13. Please contact me if you are interested in signing up. The winter exam window is December thru Mid February. Ways to Earn Recertification Credits by Deanna Kabliska, LASHRM Certification Chair SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP credential holders qualify for recertification credits by participating in professional development activities that relate to the SHRM Body of Competency and Knowledge. The SHRM BoCK greatly expands the scope of professional development activities that will qualify for recertification credit. By including competencies in the SHRM BoCK, many educational programs not directly tied to human resource management will qualify for PDCs. For example, Leadership programs build proficiency in the Leadership & Navigation competency; Courses in statistics expand capabilities in the Critical Evaluation competency; Business education offerings promote the Business Acumen competency All would be eligible for PDCs. Broadening the scope of eligible recertification activities will help individual HR professionals strengthen their core skills, while contributing to a stronger HR profession. 6 College Students: Untapped HR Resource for Businesses By Pam Dixon, LASHRM College Relations Chairperson Do you have a short term HR-related project that you need completed (e.g., develop job descriptions)? Are you a small business or non-profit organization that could use some additional HR project support during the fall or spring semesters? LASHRM is working to match the HR project needs of local small businesses and nonprofit organizations with HR students from three area colleges. Projects would be completed by individual or small groups of students (project will determine number of students), with the support of advisors who have HR professional experience, that last a few hours to a few days. Or, perhaps you would be willing to support future HR professionals to learn and gain experience by allowing an HR student to shadow you on the job for a few hours in a day, participate in an informational interview, or perhaps you re interested in becoming a mentor for a college student pursuing the HR major/minor. Currently Western Technical College, Viterbo University, and UW La Crosse have students who are working toward an HR major or minor, and are actively involved in SHRM clubs at their respective schools. While internships are an important component to gaining knowledge and experience, they are not the only way. Many students are available to complete short term projects, or would benefit from job shadowing, conducting an informational interview with a current HR practitioner, or being mentored by a seasoned HR leader. We hope you ll consider any of the options listed above and support future HR practitioners and leaders. SHRM A-Team Advocacy in Action By Meredith Nethercutt Senior Associate for Member Advocacy and A-Team Program Director and Jill Taylor, LASHRM Governemtn Affairs Chairperson It's that time of year again! The U.S. House of Representatives members have already concluded their summer work and have left Washington, D.C. for their home districts, while the Senate is likely to wrap-up business by the end of this week. While plans may continue to shift, with this unofficial start to the August congressional recess season (now through Labor Day), lawmakers and their staffs will use this large block of time to meet locally with constituents, hold town-hall forums, and attend community events to keep current on what is happening in their legislative areas. This is the perfect time to meet directly with your lawmaker while he/she is back home in the district to further establish yourself as a primary resource on HR policy matters, educating the local office on key issues impacting your workplace. It is your responsibility - as a voter, and as an active member of the community dedicated to protecting and advancing the HR profession - to initiate a face-to-face meeting with your lawmaker and local staff, or plan to attend a local town-hall meeting. Fortunately, SHRM is here to offer guidance and materials throughout the August recess and in-district engagement process. The following items are included in this communication to help provide direction as you are active this August: August recess in-district lawmaker meeting scheduling steps Suggested public policy issues to discuss with your lawmaker How any member of the A-Team can strategically engage
8 AUGUST RECESS IN-DISTRICT CONGRESSIONAL MEETING GUIDANCE Below are the first steps you should take at this time to reach out to a congressional office to schedule a meeting: Step 1: Confirm the names of your members of Congress. Use SHRM's HR Policy Action Center or the SHRM Advocacy App to look up your members of Congress and their district address and contact information. Step 2: Submit your request for an in-person meeting. Visit your lawmaker's website and fill out an online meeting request form; fax or a meeting request letter to the local office; or place a call to the district office to schedule a meeting over the phone. For your convenience, access SHRM's template meeting request letter which you can personalize and send to your lawmaker. Step 3: Confirm your meeting a few days prior with the district office scheduler. *View additional district meeting guidance from SHRM. Contact us if we can help you confirm/set up a meeting in your district. SUGGESTED PUBLIC POLICY ISSUES TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR LAWMAKER SHRM's Government Affairs team recommends A-Team members discuss circulating policy issues currently facing HR professionals during your legislative meetings. Acceess CFGI advocacy resources to educate Congress on the reforms we need to America's immigration and employment verification systems.
9 Use SHRM's online feedback form to provide our team with highlights, action items and additional notes from your meeting. HOW THE A-TEAM CAN STRATEGICALLY ENGAGE Whether you are serving on SHRM's A-Team as an "HR Advocate" or leading as an "Advocacy Captain", here are some specific items to keep in mind as you engage with lawmakers this August: HR Advocates: Make sure you know who your federal elected officials are, and where they stand on various workplace issues of interest. Follow the suggested procedure to set up a local meeting. Invite friends and colleagues from the HR profession to join you. Communicate with your respective A-Team Advocacy Captain ( us if you would like to be connected to the Advocacy Captain for your congressional district and federal lawmaker). Advocacy Captains: Contact SHRM for a current list of HR Advocates in your district. Coordinate strategic local activities and advocate engagement during August recess. * For additional information about planning for your congressional district meetings or events, or if you have any questions, need guidance or additional support, please contact SHRM's Meredith Nethercutt at Meredith.nethercutt@shrm.org.
