Gary Alveranga and Margarita DeLeon facilitated an information discussion regarding Diversity and Inclusion. We ve obviously come a long way since the early days of AAP administration. Congratulations are in order for our Past President, Karen Sating! She was recently selected to serve as the Membership Director for the Ohio SHRM Council. Karen s skills were obviously recognized as she was chosen over several other candidates. We re fortunate to have Karen in our Chapter as a voice at the State level. I am looking forward to our upcoming board meeting and hope to very soon announce the appointments of our two board vacancies. We have a great team in place, and on behalf of the entire board, I can assure you that we are dedicated to promoting the mission of our chapter. Please join me at our February lunch meeting to welcome Robb Martin, Organizational Development Consultant, Akron Area SHRM President, and Owner of Mindshift Consulting. 2 Page 2 Are you familiar with SHRM Ohio State Council? By: Karen Sating, Past President The Ohio State Council of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) is a key resource for direction, growth, development for SHRM chapters, volunteer leaders, and Human Resource professionals in Ohio. The Ohio SHRM State Council, along with their 27 local affiliated SHRM chapters, is dedicated to leading, educating, and inspiring the over 12,000 HR professionals in Ohio and educating, serving as HR experts to, and positively impacting other business professionals in Ohio. The Ohio SHRM State Council is a non-profit organization and exists as an affiliate of The Society for Human Resource Management. Membership is made up of volunteers who are elected or appointed to The Council and includes the Chapter Presidents of the local SHRM affiliated chapters in Ohio. The Ohio SHRM State Council can provide you information about Human Resource initiatives, activities, and events within our state; information on potential upcoming legislative issues, current workforce initiatives, certification preparation courses; a list of Human Resources positions open within the state; and other useful information. The Magazine is published two times per year - May and November. The publication is printed in full-color, and presented in a magazine format. There are opportunities for human resource professionals to write articles for this new publication. 3 Page 3 SHRM Medina County Voucher Program SHRM-Medina County offers a "Voucher" program for payment of monthly membership luncheon meetings in order to expedite the registration process. Members may purchase any number of vouchers, whether for the entire year or for part of the year, at $17.50 each. Vouchers can be purchased with check mailed to SHRM Medina County, P.O. Box 1706, Medina, OH or with credit card via our website at shrm-medina.shrm.org. After payment is received, you will receive a book of vouchers in the mail or you can pick them up at the next monthly chapter meeting. At each meeting, payment is then made by presenting a voucher at the registration desk. As SHRM-Medina County membership is individual, vouchers are not transferable. Vouchers can be used at any monthly membership meeting and have no expiration date. Take advantage of this easy way to pay for the monthly chapter luncheon meetings. 4 Page 4 Meet Gloria Jones, VP Membership Gloria I. Jones, RHU Employee Benefits Consultant USI Insurance Cleveland Employee Benefits Agency Experience Gloria Jones is an Employee Benefits Consultant for USI Insurance. Gloria has over 30 years experience in Employee Benefits and began her career at CIGNA Insurance as a disability and life insurance claims analyst which involved field investigations for disability and accidental death claims. She then turned her focus to Human Resources where she was a HR Generalist and Benefits Administrator for a large west-coast company. Most recently, Gloria worked for an employee benefits brokerage firm where she spearheaded the creation and implementation of a unique group benefits program that focused on improving the health, well-being and engagement of employees. Gloria s unique career experiences allow her to have an effective consultative approach to her work as she understands her clients needs and abilities and is able to identify creative and alternative solutions. Affiliations / Service Gloria is a licensed Life and Health and Property & Casualty Agent and a Registered Health Underwriter (RHU). She is passionate about giving back to her community by volunteering for Habitat for Humanity, engaging in Cleveland s Dress for Success programs, and supporting Leukemia & Lymphoma Society through many avenues, including Team in Training. Education Gloria attended Kent State University majoring in Criminal Justice Studies. She earned the Registered Health Underwriter (RHU) Designation from the American College of Financial Services in 2003.

5 Page 5 Frequently Asked Membership Questions Q: As a National SHRM member, am I automatically a member of a local chapter? A: No. National SHRM membership is separate from membership in your local chapter. Each chapter has its own membership application process and dues structures. While there are more than 575 locally affiliated SHRM chapters, they are autonomous entities in their operations and membership requirements. To become a member of the SHRM Medina County local chapter, please visit to complete your Membership Application. Q: As a member of my local chapter, am I automatically a SHRM member? A: No. Please see the previous answer. To join SHRM, please visit Q: Can I belong to more than one SHRM chapter? A: Yes. You can belong to as many chapters as you desire, but we ask that you indicate SHRM Medina County chapter as your primary chapter. Q: Why should I belong to a local chapter? A: Membership in a SHRM-affiliated local chapter means access to a local network of HR profession-als, as well as professional-development programs, products and services in your community that can broaden your skills and make you more valuable to your organization. There are resources and services available through SHRM that our SHRM Medina County chapter can t possibly duplicate, and there are resources and services available through our SHRM Medina County chapter that SHRM can t provide. You can truly maximize your opportunities by becoming a member of both SHRM and the MCSHRM chapter. It s a winning combination!

No shows will be billed. You must cancel at least 24 hours in advance to avoid being invoiced for a SHRM - Medina County event. 7 Page 7 College Relations Student Chapter FAQs Are You a Student Looking to Join a Local SHRM Chapter? Q: What does a SHRM student chapter do? A: SHRM student chapters have regular meetings, usually weekly or bi-monthly, with scheduled programs designed to help members learn more about HR and the real world of business. Elected student officers run the chapters with the assistance of a chapter advisor and sponsoring professional SHRM chapter members. Chapters invite local business people to speak to the members about current developments in the business world and how they will impact future workers. Beyond the regular meetings, chapters organize a variety of activities including company tours, student conferences, resume-writing and interviewing workshops, fundraisers, internship programs, and social events. These activities allow you to learn more about HRM while building relationships with local professionals and other students and of course, having fun! Q: I'm studying business but I'm not an HR major. How would SHRM membership benefit me? A: One of the keys to success in any type of management is good interpersonal skills. Participating in an SHRM chapter will help you to better understand and develop these skills. In addition, many of the issues you will explore as a member of SHRM such as effective management practices, employee motivation, violence in the workplace, and sexual harassment, will be relevant to you whether you become an accounting manager, a sales manager, or a human resource manager. Everyone in business works with people in some way. Q: Can membership in SHRM help me find a job after graduation? A: Yes. Job search books and placement studies all agree that 60-70% of jobs are found through personal contacts, or networking. Becoming part of SHRM gives you access to our network of more than 250,000 members, 575 professional chapters, and 450 student chapters nationwide. While SHRM does not offer formal job placement assistance, we do offer the opportunity to meet and build relationships with the HR professionals who represent potential employers. Many of our student members have obtained entry-level jobs and internships, that were never advertised to the public, through the connections they made as active members of SHRM Q: How can I become a member of a local SHRM Student Chapter? Robb Martin is an Organizational Development Consultant, the owner of MindShift Consulting. He previously served as the Executive Director and COO of The Chapel. Prior to joining The Chapel, he was the Vice President for Retail Investments for Ohio at National City Bank for seven years. Robb and his wife have owned four businesses ranging from manufacturing to retailing in the Akron area. He is currently the Vice President and Program Chair for the Akron Society for Human Resource Management. He teaches the SPHR/PHR prep course for the University of Akron and the GPHR Prep Course for Slippery Rock University. Educationally, Robb has an executive MBA from Kent State University and a second degree from Case Western Reserve University a masters in Positive Organizational Development and Change. His designations include: SPHR, GPHR, CRPS and CRPC. Robb is certified in 360-degree feedback, MBTI, Fibro-B, and Harrison Assessments and has carried National Association of Securities Dealers Series 7, 24 and 4 to manage option traders. He has also taught courses on global leadership for Slippery Rock University and is currently a Senior Lecturer at the University of Akron and Kent State University teaching Organizational Behavior and Organizational Development.
