Subscribe Share Past Issues Translate APRIL 2015 NEWSLETTER ROGUE VALLEY CHAPTER SHRM Message from your President Hello SHRM Rogue Valley Members, Just a quick update regarding the creation of our Rogue Valley Chapter SHRM logo: we re working our way towards having a new logo soon. We have the final submissions narrowed down and are just making a few last minute tweaks then the board will be able to vote and soon, we ll have a new logo that will be able to embody the feeling of the Rogue Valley within the logo. Thank you to all who were able to submit and make suggestions. Top News: In March we participated in the amazing Careers in Gear event! The final head count was around 770 students from all over Jackson/Josephine counties and even students from Siskiyou county were able to attend! We all know workforce readiness is important to all our industries, so a special thank you goes out to all those members who helped, either at the SHRM table or their own company tables or as very important team leaders. Letting the local high school students know what types of business and industry are prevalent in our area is both enlightening and invaluable for the students. One day they may become our future employees. For those of you who have earned your SHRM CP or SHRM SCP certification since January CONGRATULATIONS!! Up until now, the tutorial was the way to become certified for those HR professionals who already held one of the HRCI certifications (PHR/SPHR/GPHR). However,

the first testing window will open soon and professionals seeking the new SHRM certification will be able to sit for their certification. Either way, being able to proudly hold one of these certifications is a wonderful way to invest in yourself and your career, whether you choose HRCI or SHRM CP/SCP or even hold both as many professionals are doing. Whatever you ultimately decide, congratulations on achieving these professional level certifications. We have a great couple of months ahead with our scheduled SHRM programs. In April we have Investigations and in May is our Annual Legal Seminar. Both will be held at the Smullin Center in Medford. If you haven t already, please RSVP. The information is posted on our website and further in this newsletter. Respectfully, Tanya Haakinson, PHR, SHRM CP President, Rogue Valley Chapter SHRM APRIL PROGRAM No Stone Unturned Workplace Investigation Training Experienced HR Managers, Patricia (Trish) Forde, SPHR, GPHR, SHRM SCP, The Hershey Company, Ashland Plant and Michelle Robison, MA, CareStream Health will discuss the fundamentals of an Effective Workplace Investigation. You can do this in any month members in a 2 hour long program. This month, I would like to challenge my HR colleagues out really, but I m choosing April to implement this initiative in my workplace.

Ideas that you might consider include the following: Hold a Diversity Logo Contest and encourage employees to have their kids/family enter it too! Have a vote and choose a winner, awarding a grand prize and prizes for entrants. Have a Diversity topic drawing (coloring) contest and invite employees and their kids to enter, offering a nice prize to the top winner and maybe stickers or diversity pencil for entrants (see below for prize ideas). Hold a Diversity Day potluck at your workplace and encourage people to bring food/dishes representing different cultures to share. Create a Diversity Bulletin Board and invite employees to share a fact or story about their family, or their culture, or ancestry that makes them unique. Issue prizes to entrants. Create a plan to celebrate the seven nationally recognized History and Heritage Months within your organization, such as sharing the significance of the month, little known facts, resources, bringing in cultural speakers, playing educational games, displaying posters, etc., for: African American History Month (February), Women s History Month (March), Asian Pacific American Heritage Month (May), Gay and Lesbian Pride (June), Hispanic Heritage Month (September), Disability Employment Awareness month (October), and Native American Month (November). A variety of resources on the origins of these months can be found on the internet at sites such as Or come up with your own ideas that would fit into your workplace. (If you come up with a successful idea that was implemented at your workplace, me at pforde@hersheys.com and I will share your results in our next Rogue Valley SHRM newsletter! I ll also send you a cool Diversity prize! Offering Prizes Will Make Your Event Even More FUN! You can involve your workers and their families in your initiative by awarding prizes to entrants. There are low cost items available on the following website: Items include: Pencils, pins, bracelets, totes, necklaces, etc.

He defends employers against discrimination complaints, sexual harassment lawsuits, and retaliation claims, and represents employers in state court, as well as before Oregon s Bureau of Labor and Industries and the Washington State Human Rights Commission. In addition to litigation, Sean also works with employers to ensure compliance with changes in the law, including drafting and revising their employee handbooks and providing customized trainings to address harassment, discrimination, and other workplace issues to help businesses prevent grievances.

Sean regularly writes about employment law cases and decisions, and his columns can be found in such publications as the Portland Business Journal, the Daily Journal of Commerce, and Oregon Business Magazine. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Portland, and earned his J.D. at the University of Oregon. In addition to being licensed to practice in Oregon, Washington, the U.S. District Court of Oregon, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, Sean is also a Registered United States Patent Attorney. Jennifer Bouman Steagall, RedKite Employment Law Outsourcing Red Kite founder Jennifer Bouman Steagall is engaging, dynamic, compelling, entertaining, and genuinely passionate about her work, or so people say. She also happens to be a highly skilled management side employment litigation attorney with over 14 years of experience representing Oregon and Washington employers. In 2010 Jennifer left law firm life to open a solo private practice called Employment Law Outsourcing (ELO). ELO is the formal legal defense side of Jennifer s practice and continues to be the name under which Jennifer represents clients in legal matters filed at the agency level and in state and federal court. Over the next 3 years ELO grew into more than an employment law practice; it became a better business practice. To give the prevention focused, organizational development side of her practice its own voice, Jennifer launched Red Kite as a d.b.a. of ELO in It doesn t take long to see Jennifer s passion for training and her commitment to helping businesses grow and succeed. Jennifer s clients consider her to be a trusted business partner and effective on site trainer with a reputation for professionalism, integrity, enthusiasm and creativity. She is proud to be a favorite speaker for human resource organizations, the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries, the Oregon Employer s Council, and the Portland State University HR Certificate Professional Development Program.
