2 PATHS Credentialing Program 2 The PATHS Credentialing program is an education and training program designed for Direct Support Professionals who work with individuals with developmental disabilities. PATHS curriculum is based on the best national models, such as the Community Support Skills Standards and the National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals Code of Ethics. The program offers sequential credentials that teach, reinforce, and build upon the essential skills of a highly qualified Direct Support Professional. PATHS is a competency-based credential program, which means that its graduates earn a credential that has value in the marketplace. PATHS leads to better jobs and more satisfying careers. This also means that PATHS courses are not simply built around instruction that is followed by a series of tests designed to measure what students know. Instead, students complete an extensive portfolio that documents their skills a collection of samples of what they know and are able to do. The portfolio demonstrates that the trainee has fulfilled all requirements. CIP Certificate of Initial Proficiency The PATHS Certificate of Initial Proficiency (CIP) Credentialing program is an education and training program designed for Direct Support Professionals who work with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in a variety of settings. The PATHS CIP program is a course of study that focuses on developing the knowledge, skills, and confidence of the direct support professional. The PATHS CIP curriculum is based on national best practice models such as the Community Support Skills Standards and the National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals Code of Ethics. The PATHS CIP program requires sixty (60) hours of classroom instruction, including training in community living skills and supports, history of services, self-determination, documentation, positive behavior supports, team communication, advocacy, health and safety management, personal ethics, conflict resolution, and much more. The twenty (20) CIP modules, which are each three (3) hours in length, are approved for Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD) seminar credit including a 30-hour DODD Seminar Credit in Introduction to Developmental Disabilities and a 30-hour DODD Seminar Credit in Principles of Work/Principles of Habilitation Programming. All modules are also approved for Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU s) from the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD). In addition to the completion of the 60 hours of classroom instruction, candidates for the PATHS CIP credential are required to demonstrate their proficiency in specific competency areas through the development of a professional portfolio. The PATHS CIP Portfolio consists of a collection of work samples that demonstrate the candidate s mastery of skills in a variety of areas. All PATHS CIP candidates are required to work with a skill mentor whose purpose is to assist in the application of skills to their workplaces, as well as to guide the candidate in the completion of the PATHS CIP Portfolio. Each of the twenty (20) training modules of the Certificate of Initial Proficiency (CIP) have been approved for three (3) hours/ units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of

3 101 Introduction to the Paths Credentialing Program The purpose of this first module of the Certificate of Initial Proficiency program is to explain the purpose of the fifteen competency areas of the Community Support Skills Standards and why each is important to providing effective direct support to individuals with developmental disabilities. The nine codes of ethical practice from the National Alliance of Direct Support Professional (NADSP) Code of Ethics are introduced to candidates and will be further reviewed in future modules. This module prepares CIP credential candidates for participation in this program by introducing them to the mission and structure of the PATHS program as well as the expectations of the PATHS CIP portfolio. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of 104 Ethics on the Frontline: Utilizing the NADSP Code of Ethics in Your Daily Practice This module investigates the nine areas of the NADSP Code of Ethics and uses this code of ethics to make ethical decisions and to resolve ethical dilemmas. This class employs the use of scenarios and small group activities to apply the code of ethics to realistic DSP work situations. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of 102 Principles and Practices of an Effective Direct Support Professional 105 Self-Determination This module defines and discusses professionalism as it relates to direct support practice and explains how professionalism is incorporated in the NADSP Code of Ethics. Candidates review time management and organization techniques to benefit the efficiency and effectiveness of their professional practice. In this module candidates participate in activities designed to assist them in clarifying their professional mission and goals in order to determine whether the tasks they spend their time on at work are likely to enable them achieve their mission and goals. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of The purpose of this module is to guide the candidate through a thorough understanding of self-advocacy and self-determination as these concepts relate to the individuals they support. Candidates will discuss obstacles to self determination and the four principles of self determination while they work in groups to identify and describe the key components of making greater self-determination a reality for the individuals they support. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of 103 History of Services for People with Developmental Disabilities: Planning for the Future while Learning from the Past This module reviews the trends in public care for people with developmental disabilities from the mid-1800s to the present time in order to examine the persistent issues involving the rights, roles, and status of individual with disabilities. Candidates review early institutional growth and societal attitudes toward people with disabilities, including the development of societal attitudes in favor of segregation, involuntary sterilization, and euthanasia. This module discusses more historically recent developments in national policy and social movements affecting individuals with disabilities, including social security amendments, the parents movement, and the disability rights movement. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of 106 The Direct Support Professional as Advocate Candidates will work in this class to describe and demonstrate how actions of the direct support professional best fit the definition of advocate for individuals with developmental disabilities. Candidates will investigate different styles of direct support practice, and in group activities involving role play demonstrate a supportive, coaching style of advocacy. Candidates will discuss the importance of network building in their advocacy efforts on behalf of individuals they support. The basics of various forms of legal representation and guardianship of individuals will be reviewed in this module as well as a discussion on the legal rights of individuals with disabilities in Ohio with scenario based activities to more thoroughly support candidates to understand and guard these rights. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of 4 5

4 107 Enhancing Communication to Achieve Mutual Understanding and Effectiveness 110 The Individual Service Plan: Supporting People in Achieving their Goals and Dreams This module discusses the basics of effective communication with a focus on achieving the goals of mutual understanding in communicative efforts. This class will assist candidates in identifying barriers to effective listening and the traits of a great listener. Candidates will work together in role-play activities to investigate four approaches to communication, with an emphasis on the skills and behaviors of an effective assertive communicator. This class also allows candidates to practice special assertive communicative techniques for use in difficult situations. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of This module will focus on the components of an Individual Service Plan and help the candidate to understand and apply the components of a person-centered-planning process to their support of individuals with developmental disabilities. Candidates will work together in activities designed to assist them to develop skills in gaining information about a person s strengths, preferences, and dreams. Candidates will discuss the elements, goals, and process of the individual plan and the importance of facilitating natural partnerships in the design of supports to assist individuals to achieve greater levels of power and control in their lives and supports. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of 108 Utilizing Augmented Alternative Communication Systems This module provides the candidate with an overview of the use of augmented alternative communication (AAC) systems. Candidates will review of a variety of unaided (non electronic) AAC systems and aided (electronic) AAC systems including very low tech aids which may be created or adapted by the DSP of individuals they support as well as very high tech computerized systems which incorporate the latest in technological advances. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of 109 Positive Behavior Support Strategies and Understanding Behavior as Communication In this module the candidates will analyze a variety of challenging behaviors with an emphasis on understanding the function or meaning of an individual s challenging behavior. This module will emphasize that there is a function to challenging behavior, and for challenging behavior to persist over time, it must be meeting a need for the individual. Candidates will discuss the concept that for behavior support techniques to be successful, a replacement behavior must be taught to assist individuals to meet their needs in a more acceptable manner. This module will also emphasize the importance of team process in positive behavior support. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of 111 This module uses the concept of the Success Triangle to emphasize three primary areas that must be addressed to help facilitate the successful community involvement and connections of individuals with developmental disabilities. These three areas are the building of self esteem, quality education, and effective supports. In this class candidates will investigate the concepts of self-esteem, self-fulfilling prophecy, learned helplessness, and learned hopefulness. A discussion of the techniques used to determine and then provide for the support needs of individuals will emphasize the importance of natural community based supports over paid supports whenever possible. Candidates will also explore the principles of effective teaching to support individuals in achieving their goals and dreams. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of 112 Community Living Skills and Supports: Making it Happen The Direct Support Professional as Teacher This module continues the discussion of the effective teaching skills of a competent DSP in more depth. Candidates will investigate concepts related to how the intellect functions, with a strong focus on understanding their own preferred learning style and the learning styles of others, and then applying this understanding to their teaching methodology with working with individuals they support to learn new skills. A focus is made in this class of using multi-sensory instruction to help individuals to process information as well as determining the Multiple Intelligences of individuals and then incorporating that information into their teaching techniques. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of 6 7

5 113 Fundamentals of Effective Documentation The focus of this module is to inform candidates of best practice in professional documentation. Candidates will identify types of documentation that are required for the DSP on the job and the purpose of each type, discussing ten guidelines that assure documentation adheres to legal, ethical and programmatic standards. Candidates will develop strategies that can be used to manage documentation effectively and investigate methods to individualize documentation systems to best gather data and progress related to the goals and services of individuals they support. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of 116 Effective Team Communication Furthering the discussion of the principles and practices of an effective team, this module will explore types of team communication, and candidates will participate in activities to demonstrate how to use them effectively. Discussion revolves around barriers to effective communication with a focus on how to work through these barriers. Class roleplaying activities will promote candidate skill in the giving and receiving of constructive criticism within the team. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of 114 Writing Accurate and Effective Incident Reports 117 Team Conflict Resolution and Problem Solving This module guides candidates in a thorough understanding of the rules and definitions of Major Unusual Incidents and assists them in understanding how those rules and regulations determine what needs to be documented when experiencing an incident affecting an individual with a developmental disability who is served by the candidate. The class will work together to identify factors which affect the quality of incident reports. Candidates will discuss elements that affect memory and recall with a focus on reducing factors with negatively impact the completeness and accuracy of incident reports. These concepts are emphasized in class activities involving video clip scenarios which require candidates to recall information presented. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of As a continuation of the discussion of effective team communication this class focuses on conflict within teams. Discussion revolves around communication tools and techniques and how these can be used to help or to harm teams. Styles of conflict resolution are evaluated with emphasis on creating win-win solutions when possible, creating a safe environment within a team for conflict resolution to occur and for deciding when to resolve conflicts. The process of conflict resolution is investigated with a look at how the problem solving process, understood and used effectively, assists a team in the conflict resolution process. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of 115 Principles and Practices of an Effective Team 118 The Basics of Benefits This module investigates the value of the team and teamwork in the field of services to individuals with disabilities. Candidates discuss in detail the stages of team development, coupled with the common team and individual behaviors associated with each stage. Within a discussion of team dynamics candidates will explore the traits of a good team member along with the elements necessary for the creation of an effective team. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of This module provides candidates with the opportunity to develop a working understanding of governmental needs-based benefits and the agencies that administer them. Candidates will be introduced to Social Security Administration programs and Ohio Job and Family Services programs available to eligible individuals. Candidates will investigate SSI, SSDI and SSDAC, including computations and work incentives as well as an overview of the Medicare and Medicaid programs, including the Medicaid Buy-In program. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of 8 9

6 119 Health and Safety Management: The Role of the Direct Support Professional This module prepares the candidate to support individuals in best managing their health and safety and includes a discussion of best practice in preparing and administering medication and recognizing and responding to medication side effects, including the management and tracking of health care delivery, health status and health related assessments. Candidates will also investigate their own role and responsibility in the area of ensuring health and safety of the persons for whom they provide support through the teaching and encouragement in the practice of following a healthy diet. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of CAP Certificate of Advanced Proficiency 120 Facilitating and Supporting Community Inclusion In this module candidates will discuss importance of and rationale for assisting individuals with disabilities to become more connected to their communities. Candidates will investigate the concept of a Social Guide and a Community Builder and apply these concepts to their own roles. This class will discuss the practical and emotional benefits of being connected to one s community with a look at the importance of assuming valued social roles in the community. This class has been approved for three (3) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of Paths Seminars PATHS also offers a variety of stand-alone seminars designed for on going staff education and training. The Certificate of Advanced Proficiency (CAP) program is an education and training program designed for Direct Support Professionals who have completed the Certificate of Initial Proficiency (CIP) and are interested in pursuing a higher level of certification, learning, and skill attainment. The PATHS CAP curriculum is based on national best practice models such as the Community Support Skills Standards and the National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals Code of Ethics. The PATHS CAP Program includes 116 hours of classroom instruction in the areas of participant empowerment, understanding and utilizing assessments, facilitation of services, advocacy and self-advocacy, vocational, educational, and career support, community service and networking, crisis intervention, organizational participation, education, training, and self-development, supporting successful community living, advanced benefits management, and effective teaching practices and strategies. The twelve CAP modules are separated into twenty-one classes which vary in length from five to six hours each. In addition to the completion of the 116 hours of classroom instruction, candidates for the PATHS CAP credential are required to demonstrate their proficiency in specific Community Support Skills Standards competency areas through the development of a professional portfolio. The PATHS CAP Portfolio consists of a collection of five work samples that demonstrate the candidate s mastery of specific skills. All PATHS CAP candidates work with a skill mentor whose purpose is to assist the candidate in the application of skills to their workplaces, as well as to guide the candidate in the completion of the PATHS CAP Portfolio. 7 201 Participant Empowerment In this first of the CAP modules candidates will continue CIP class discussions on empowering individuals with developmental disabilities. As the structure guiding this discussion candidates will investigate the five components of The Empower Tower : maximizing supports given to individuals, providing choices to individuals and facilitating decision making skills, enhancing the strengths and capabilities of individuals, developing the skills of assertiveness, building self-confidence and self esteem, and increasing the life experiences of individuals. This class has been approved for ten (10) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of 204 The Art of Advocacy and Self-Advocacy This module first explores the historical context and need for advocacy and self advocacy. Candidates will discuss the imperative of relationship-building through trust and effective communication before entering into advocacy efforts on behalf of individuals. Candidates will explore the roles that advocacy and self-advocacy play in the lives of people with developmental disabilities. This module delves into the concepts of attribution styles and individual s internal and external locus of control and how maximizing an internal locus of control benefits successful goal-directed decision making and self-advocacy. Discussion focuses on the important skills of seeking, clarifying, and acting constructively on feedback from persons with developmental disabilities, from co-workers, and from community members. This class has been approved for ten (10) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of 202 Understanding and Utilizing Assessments 205 Vocational, Educational, and Career Support In this module candidates will investigate assessments used in the human services field. Candidates will examine assessments which evaluate educational and academic performance, vocational skills and aptitudes, psychological and behavioral status, medical status, and independent living skills. In addition to this overview of formal and informal assessments candidates will discuss ways to prepare an individual for an assessment and approaches to assist individuals to participate in the assessment process. This module also discusses the potential ethical problems that can arise before, during, or after the assessment process. This class has been approved for ten (10) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of This module looks first at vocational services and programs available in Ohio for individuals with developmental disabilities. Candidates will explore the process and best practices associated with the transition of individuals with disabilities from school to work and will go on to investigate assisting individuals to determine their job type preferences, customizing employment to best utilize the skills, and preferences of the individual while meeting needs and expectations of the workplace. This module also explores ways in which candidates may assist the individual to prepare for work, including job development and job coaching. This class has been approved for ten (10) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of 203 Facilitation of Services This module investigates the provision of effective supports through the personcentered planning process. Candidates will look at specific person-centered planning techniques used to determine the formal/informal and natural/planned supports to be provided to individuals. Candidates will explore their role as facilitator of supports to individuals as well as their role as team member. This class has been approved for ten (10) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of 206 Community Service and Networking This module guides the candidate in the evaluation of how human services organizations function in the community with a focus on the changing perspective of these agencies from a needs-based focus to an assets-based focus. Through an in-depth look at the philosophy of Asset Based Community Development the candidates are encouraged to shift their own focus to one which seeks to identify those assets of individuals which can be used to facilitate community connections and relationships rather than looking at meeting needs of individuals through the provision of professional supports. Candidates will participate in activities in which they will research and develop information on community resources which may be relevant to the utilization of the assets, interests, and needs of the individual. This class has been approved for ten (10) hours/units of 12 13

8 207 Crisis Intervention 210 Supporting Successful Community Living This module guides the candidate in an investigation of the phases of a crisis situation. Candidates will explore crisis prevention by identifying situations in the environment that can evolve into a crisis and the strategies which might be employed in these situations to prevent a crisis. This module help candidates to develop skill in utilizing appropriate techniques that can be used to intervene in a crisis. Candidates also investigate postevent teaching strategies which may be employed to support individuals after a crisis as well as help prevent future crises. This class has been approved for ten (10) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of This module guides candidates in an exploration of a variety of high and low tech assistive devices and therapy services available to individuals with developmental disabilities. Candidates will develop skills in assessing individual s needs and assets and then facilitating appropriate supports reflective of those needs and assets. Candidates will discover the process required to obtain and secure funding for assistive equipment and therapies. Candidates will investigate strategies to assist individuals receiving support to recruit, train, and manage support staff. This class has been approved for six (6) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of 208 Organizational Participation 211 Advanced Benefits Management In this module candidates explore their roles as team and organization members. Examination of the mission statement and guiding principles of organizations helps individuals to investigate how these relate to and guide day-to-day work and focus. Candidates will work in this module to design their own professional mission statements from which to evaluate their own focus and efforts when at work. Candidates participate in activities to build skills in interviewing, evaluating, and selecting job candidates. This module also addresses organizational conflict, conflict management styles, and allows candidates the opportunity to practice conflict resolution techniques and negotiation. This class has been approved for ten (10) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities. In this module candidates build upon skills developed in the CIP benefits management class. These skills relate to identifying individual needs and eligibility for governmental needs-based benefits and applying for and maintaining benefits. Benefits addressed in this module include SSI, SSDI and SSDAC as well as the impact of income on these benefits and the use of work incentives. This module also investigates the Medicaid and Medicare programs. This class has been approved for fifteen (15) hours/units of 209 Education, Training, and Self-Development 212 Effective Teaching Practices and Strategies This module first investigates Ohio training rules related to Developmental Disabilities Professionals. A focus of this module is to guide candidates through goal setting to develop personal goals, to enhance personal strengths, and to identify the skills needed to succeed at work. To develop skill at achieving goals candidates will explore the components of a quality planning cycle. This module proceeds to encourage the candidates skill in effectively mentoring others. This class has been approved for ten (10) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of The final CAP module focuses on the skill of the candidate in his or her role of teacher of individuals with developmental disabilities. This module emphasizes the importance of knowing the preferred learning styles and communication and sensory preferences of the individual before designing teaching and learning experiences. A strong focus of this module is the creation and adaptation of teaching tools which reflect the learning styles and preferences of the individual. Candidates investigate techniques they may use to ensure individuals generalize the skills they have been taught. Candidates explore the use of least-to-most prompting when teaching individuals, as well as techniques to evaluate their own teaching effectiveness. This class has been approved for five (5) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of 14 15

9 Becoming a PATHS Licensed Training Entity 16 The Ohio Alliance of Direct Support Professionals (OADSP) has made it possible for organizations to become Licensed PATHS Training Entities and to teach the Certificate of Initial Proficiency (CIP) and the Certificate of Advanced Proficiency (CAP) to their own employees. PATHS Licensed Entities may also offer the PATHS courses to individuals outside their organizations and charge them the approved PATHS tuition. In order to become a Licensed PATHS Training Entity, the entity must do the following: 1. Purchase the CIP and the CAP Training System Kits from OADSP. The CIP and CAP can be purchased as a set or purchased separately. 2. Agree to follow, sign, and adhere to all the stipulations in the Confidentiality Agreement; 3. Agree to follow, sign, and adhere to all the stipulations in the License Agreement Upon purchase of the PATHS Training System Kit, OADSP will provide a kit orientation to the Licensed Entity to review all training materials, fees, requirements, and responsibilities. PATHS Licensed Training Entities must use the approved curriculum modules in the PATHS Training System Kit. PATHS Licensed Training Entities may only use PATHS Certified Instructors to teach the PATHS curriculum. With the purchase of the license, PATHS Licensed Entities are permitted to send as many instructors as needed to the PATHS Instructor Course at no additional charge. PATHS Licensed Entities are required to assure availability of Skill Mentors who meet the minimum qualifications for candidates taking their PATHS CIP and/or CAP courses. If PATHS Licensed Entities cannot supply a Skill Mentor for their candidates, they must contact their respective PATHS Regional Council and pay a fee to the council for the supplying of skill mentors. PATHS Licensed Training Entities submit completed Portfolios from their credential candidates for grading to their respective PATHS Regional Coordinator who will forward them to an approved PATHS Grading Team. Each candidate will receive a typed, professional assessment of their portfolio. PATHS Licensed Entities are encouraged to send their graduates to their respective PATHS Regional Council s graduation ceremony to honor their Direct Support Professionals and celebrate their accomplishment. PATHS Licensed Entities must pay the annual license renewal fee which shall entitle them to all curriculum revisions and new materials that may be incorporated into the PATHS Credentialing Program. Specialized Credential Courses and PATHS Seminars The PATHS Specialized Credential Courses and PATHS Seminars are education and training programs designed for professionals who are interested in pursuing a higher level of specialized knowledge and skill attainment. The PATHS Specialized Credential Courses include the following: Autism Spectrum Disorder and the Direct Support Professional Specialized Skills in Supporting Elder Clients with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Positive Behavior Supports Supporting Individuals with Developmental Disabilities and Mental Illness The PATHS Seminars include the following: PATHS Supervisor Course The Art of Coaching and Mentoring Employees PATHS Instructor Training PATHS PATHS also offers a variety of other stand alone seminars designed for on-going staff education and training. The PATHS Seminars vary in length and can be customized to fit the training needs of your organization. The CPDU s also meet continuing education requirements for Ohio county board staff and county board members.

10 PATHS Instructor Course This course will certify and prepare instructors to teach the PATHS Certificate of Initial Proficiency (CIP) and Certificate of Advanced Proficiency (CAP) training modules according to the mission and philosophy of PATHS. This course guides the candidates through the purpose, structure, and goals of the PATHS CIP and CAP programs. In this course candidates explore their own roles as instructors in the PATHS program as well as their responsibility for assisting the CIP and CAP candidates to be successful. Working together in group activities, the candidates explore and utilize PATHS CIP and CAP resources, including the Community Support Skill Standards (CSSS) Book, NADSP Code of Ethics, Table of Learner Outcomes for CIP and CAP programs, the Portfolio Handbook the CIP and CAP Curriculum Materials. Positive Behavior Support This class will provide students with the fundamentals of helping individuals meet challenges they face in their lives. Sometimes the challenges individuals face result in different ways of expression and some of these ways may not always be positive. Interwoven into this Positive Behavior Support Class will be the philosophy of Positive Culture. Positive Behavior Support is a blend of on-line learning through the College of Direct Support and PATHS and face-to-face sessions that will provide the student with opportunities to learn, ask questions, and demonstrate their abilities. Topics include mental health diagnosis, support plans, understanding positive approaches, policies that guide our field, and more. The Keys to Successful Supervision This course provides candidates with the conceptual framework needed for supervisors to guide and lead successful teams with a focus on the practical elements needed to make this happen. This course leads the class through the components of the management process, including the traits shared by great leaders, as well as the purpose of the supervisor and the keys for successful supervision. Candidates explore employee motivation as well as the reasons for lack of employee motivation. Students will work together to explore different types of culture existing within organizations. Each student will participate in activities which result in the creation of a personal vision statement. Organizational and individual goal setting will be explored in this class along with discussion and activities which provide instruction in the supervisory activities of interviewing, hiring, and coaching employees. This two-day course has been approved for twelve (12) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of The Art of Coaching and Mentoring Employees This course will introduce the concept of mentoring in the workplace and will guide class participants in learning and practicing the skills necessary to build a skill-enhancing relationship with others. Participants will explore the necessary skills and attitudes of being an effective mentor. The class will investigate both mentoring as a management skill and the more naturally occurring relatively unstructured form of mentoring. Class participants will explore together the mentoring process of building a partnership to help a mentee develop the skills, behaviors, and insights needed to reach professional goals. This class uses group interaction and activities to practice the mentor skills of intentionally setting goals, giving feedback, and solving performance problems. Participants will learn to mentor others in how to problem solve creatively, prioritize activities, manage multiple priorities and attain targeted goals. This two-day course has been approved for twelve (12) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of PATHS Autism Spectrum Disorder and the Direct Support Professional This course is designed to introduce participants to the broad range of characteristics that are part of the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder and to help participants to recognize a variety of supports that they can employ to meet specific needs and enhance the special interests of individuals they support. Course participants will participate in self study between classes, accessing a variety of websites and written materials. Class participants will use study questions to guide internet readings to strengthen their knowledge of the specific topics. Responses to these study questions will also be included with a completed portfolio, submitted at the end of the course. The portfolio will contain three samples of the participant s work in the areas of their choosing, including: 1. Communication Support for a person with ASD with limited verbal skills; 2. Sensory Support for a person with ASD with sensory sensitivity/need; 3. Social Support for a person with Asperger s Syndrome; or 4. Organizational Support for a person with ASD needing improved daily structure. Participants will also spend time in observation and interaction with adults with autism in different settings in order to empower their confidence in advocating for, developing and providing quality supports. This four-day course will be spread out over four months, with guided self study between classes. The course has been approved for thirty (30) hours/units of Continuing Professional Development Units (CPDU) through the Ohio Department of 18 Specialized Skills in Supporting Older Clients with IDD In this course participants will practice utilizing screening tools used with older adults, including assessments relating to incontinence, cognition, activities of daily living, mobility, gait and balance, and mood. In group discussion participants will identify and discuss ethical considerations relevant to older adult screenings. In class activities participants will practice and discuss select screenings, and work together to generate potential ideas for follow-up evaluation and management. As they learn to conduct screenings correctly, participants will also gain valuable experience in describing the findings of the assessments and formulating follow-up plans based on these findings. Participants will apply what they have learned in this class by identifying older adults with whom they have contact who might benefit from these screenings. Participants in this class will also experience researching specific community resources and supports relevant to the needs of older adults, with the information being shared with other class participants. This course consists of one full day of classroom instruction (8 hours), followed two weeks later by one half-day (4 hours) of review. There are no prerequisites for this course. Course participants will complete one work sample which demonstrates their skill in utilizing screening instruments. Online work will need to be completed as part of the required work sample. 19
