inemi EGG Workshop Break Out Results September 2012
inemi Forum Objectives Engage a wide range of perspectives and inputs on the Electronics Industry and inemi Environmental Focus. Define critical incremental Electronics Industry environmental focus and deliverables for 2013 and beyond. The Outcomes of the Workshop & Potential Initiatives/Projects Will Be Reviewed Today Next Steps To Further Prioritize will also be Reviewed 1
2012- Forum on Progress in Green Electronics General Comments There was strong dialogue between research institutes, industry and NGOs, including support of Christina Meskers (Umicore) EGG keynote challenge that the next level will require a rethinking of what we have learned over the past decade. Three break-out groups produced a broad range of proposals that address the importance of social as well as technical issues. 1. Impact Studies Team still to work definition of key priorities 2. Materials and their Replacements (2) 3. Recycling, Reuse, Eco Design (4) We are holding two follow-up webinars on Wednesday, October 17, and Thursday, October 18, to start to focus these proposals. 2
Potential Projects from Workshop Discussions
Materials Key Priorities 1.) Problem Statement: There is no stake holder aligned methodology/stepwise approach to develop and assess new or alternative materials. Scope to include full Life Cycle Assessment from all key aspects Environmental assessment from extraction through end of life Performance to specifications; electrical and all mechanical attributes Manufacturability, testability, and cost 4
Materials Key Priorities 2.) Problem Statement: Multi stakeholder review/prioritization of the Chemsec SIN (Substitute It Now) list is critically needed Current challenges:» List of Greater than 400 substances» Stakeholder agreed upon method for SIN determination lacking» Validity of substances and priority needed; every company to themselves approach very costly and inefficient Opportunities: Need to develop an internationally recognized multi stakeholder methodology to identify and prioritize a list of materials of concern. The list itself must be evaluated for alternatives and risk 5
Recycling, Reuse, Eco Design, Sustainability 3.) Problem Statement: Need to identify and communicate/share best known practices for recycling, for metals recovery and for resource efficiency of EOL processing Current Challenges: Major opportunities globally to share in Best Known Practices Failure to do so results in high waste of recyclable resources Highly costly for OEM s; Lost Business Opportunities for Recyclers Scope to include metals and polymers; best known practices should be scalable 6
Recycling, Reuse, Eco Design, Sustainability 4.) Problem Statement Eco design for recycling/sustainability include toxicity assessment and critical usage/application. Scope to include proposed/outlined incentives for key design attributes that support recycling and reuse Include incentives for exceptional design for the environment (DFE) DFE should include extending product lifetime, energy usage, CO2 emissions, Ease of reuse; Percent of reuse 7
Recycling, Reuse, Eco Design, Sustainability 5.) Problem Statement There is a need to define measurable attributes of a product that is truly recyclable/reusable Scope: Include assessment of markets for recycled/reused components Quantify ease of disassembly and resource recapture. Greater point weighting for reuse over recycle. Outcomes must have International key stakeholder buy-in, with peer review, and be publicly available 8
Recycling, Reuse, Eco Design, Sustainability 6.) Problem Statement There is a lack of a comprehensive and measurable tool for assessing electronics manufacturing building s environmental footprint Scope: Tool set to be developed that evaluates all key environmental attributes of electronics manufacturing buildings including usage and handling of toxic materials, emissions (air and water) treatment, water & energy usage and recycling/reuse of manufacturing waste. Metrics must be quantifiable. Highly desirable to have government involvement and support from multiple key geographies to both recognize current superior performers, as well as recognize (annual) strong improvement players. Focus is to deliver measurable environmental footprints, and a tool and system that facilitates continuous improvement 9
Next Steps; Path Forward We will establish an on line simple survey by October 26 th The survey will ask you which of the 6 initiatives you and your organization are interested in working on moving forward It will also ask which of the initiatives your company is interested in being a chair/co-chair for. Note that these roles have the most influence in setting the desired scope and deliverables on the teams to be formed. We would like your responses to this survey in not longer than 3 weeks. The deadline will be November 16 th There is no intention to extend this deadline We would like to inform you all of which priority initiatives will be taken forward to working teams by December 7 th We will then talk to chair/co-chairs (of our choice from list of volunteers) to secure support. Teams will then start meeting after the 1 st of the year 10
Your Job Discuss the six (6) initiatives internally in your company or organization Determine interest to: Participate Chair/Co-Chair Fill out the on line survey (10 minutes of your time) Include demographic info so we know who you are Get involved in some great new environmental improvement initiatives. 11
The Project Process - 5 Steps 1 2 SELECTION DEFINITION Open for Industry input 3 PLANNING (The Initiative Phase) inemi Technical Committee (TC) Approval Required for Execution 4 EXECUTION / REVIEW 5 CLOSURE Limited to Committed inemi Members Jim Arnold 02/27/2012 Slide 12 12
inemi Initiative and Project Phases We are working on Step 1 of this initiative process Through Step 3 your organization does not need to be an inemi member to participate At the end of step 3, when Statement of Work approval is received, we move to project execution To participate in inemi projects, your organization/company must be an inemi member. Questions?? 13
Summary Great workshop opportunities have been identified We will determine if we have critical interest and leadership levels to move forward. The key to success as always is to simply follow through! Thank You Merci Gracias Grazie Danke Schon Effaristo Dank u Obrigado Go raibh Maith agat... 14
