1 Institute of Business Administration Principles of Management BBA Course Outline Instructor: Counseling Hours: Dr. Sara Khan Course Description This course focuses on basic managerial functions like planning, organizing, staffing, leading and controlling. It is specially designed to orient students to modern management practices essential for successful management of large organizations having diverse work forces and operating in the changing global, political, economic, social and technological scenarios. Session 1: Teacher student introduction, class administration, guidelines and general course introduction. Deadlines for term projects and assignments will be announced. PART 1-Introduction Of Management CH-1 The Changing Paradigm Of Management CH-2 Foundation Of Management Understanding Session 2: Chapter 1- The Changing Paradigm Of Management The definition of management, management functions, organizational performance, management skills, management types, roles and activities of a manager, small business and -for-profit management, learning organization. Session 3 and 4: CH-2 Foundation Of Management Understanding Historical forces shaping management, classical perspective, humanistic perspective, Page 1 of 7

PART-II The Environment Of Management CH-3 The Environment And Corporate Culture CH-4 Managing In A Global Environment Session 5: Chapter 3: The Environment And Corporate Culture The external environment, the organization-environment relationships, internal environment: corporate culture, environment and culture, shaping corporate culture for the twenty-first century. Session 6: CH-4 Managing In A Global Environment A borderless world, international environment, the economic environment, the legal-political environment, the socio-cultural environment, market entering strategies, the multinational corporation, managing in a global environment. PART-III Planning CH-7 Organizational Goal Setting And Planning CH-8 Strategy Formulation And Implementation CH-9 Managerial Decision-Making Session 7: CH-7 Organizational Goal Setting And Planning Goals and plans an overview, goals in organization, criteria for effective goals, planning types ad models, planning time horizon, organization responsibility for planning. Session 8 and 9: CH-8 Strategy Formulation And Implementation Strategic thinking, the strategic management process, formulating corporate-level strategy, formulating business-level strategy, formulating functional-level strategy, putting strategy into action. 6 The term report will explore the four functions of management of an organization of your choice i.e. Planning, Organizing, Leading, Controlling An organization can be a commercial organization or a non-commercial. In case of a large organization like PSO pick one department and analyze the four functions. The report should be at least 8 pages long but should not exceed ten with single spaced 12 sized fonts. (Excluding the material in the appendix like questionnaires etc) The business cards of people visited long with transcribed interviews should be attached in the appendix Students are encouraged to use their creativity in designing the questionnaire and the contents of the report. However the four functions of management of the organization or the department should be fully explored. The report will be made in groups of three. Each member should have written a part of the report. The contributions of each group member should be attached in the appendix. The parts of the report which are not the original work of the author should be properly referenced. For example if you are giving a brief history of the company it should be in your own words and if material from the website is being used the exact link should be mentioned Ideas for the Assignments Select a topic of interest in management like change management. Select three articles or research papers and prepare a summary of the various view points and angles discussed by these different authors. Select a topic of interest in management like stress management or women entrepreneurs. Conduct an interview with an industry professional on the topic and report his or her views on the topic. Select a topic of interest from management and write a analysis of how it is applicable to the Pakistani environment by means of local articles or interviews with professionals. Select a book on a specialized management topic like Japanese Management System and present a summary of one of the chapters of the book. Page 6 of 7
7 Select a management book (other than the text or reference book) and discuss a topic which has been covered in a different manner or in more detail in the selected book. If you have read a book on management or a related topic write a book review on it. Conduct a website review of a management related site, exploring the various links and options and how it can help management students. Instructions The assignment should be about a 1000 words. It should be original and any ideas, words or paragraphs which are not of your own should be referenced. You may also attach with your assignment supporting material like the photocopy of the cover of the book, or a screen from the website or interview notes. Page 7 of 7
