1 Technical /Professional Communications Minor Portfolio Guidelines for Seniors **Portfolios are to be submitted to D2L. Technical/ Professional Communications Minors must turn in a portfolio of their work within the Minor the semester of their graduation. In the past, students were required to bring their portfolio materials to the Director s office. We recently simplified this processes by creating a way for students to upload their portfolios directly to D2L. How to Upload Your Portfolio: 1. Log into your D2L account 2. Scroll down and click on participant 3. Select the link for Technical/Professional Communications 4. Upload your portfolio to the dropbox ** If you do not see Technical/Professional Communications on your D2L, contact Dr. Kungl ASAP! You Must Include the Following in Your Portfolio: A total of four projects from: ENG 238: Technical/Professional Writing 1 ISM 142: Business Systems OR CSC 103: Overview of Computer Science Two other courses, one of which must be a level course or an internship A reflective paper explaining what new skills or knowledge you have obtained throughout the Minor and how the minor has prepared you for your job search. Continued on Page 2 What s inside: Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 3 Page 4 Page 4 Portfolio Guidelines Exiting Questionnaire Job and Internship Information Career Center Info Internship Opportunity: Technical Writing ATTN: Seniors Office of Professional Writing
2 Portfolio Guidelines for Seniors Continued from Page 1 The purpose of the portfolio is to enable the Director to evaluate growth and development of skills that are taught in the minor. These portfolios are used for assessment purposes only, any you may opt to submit your portfolio anonymously by sliding it under Dr. Kungl s office door in DHC 007. Portfolios will not be returned. Graduating seniors will also be asked to complete a short exiting questionnaire which is used as a supplementary material for evaluating the T/PC program. See below for more information! Note from the Director: The Exiting Questionnaire While the portfolio is a standard assessment tool that helps drive program development, the piece that helps me the most is actually the exiting questionnaire I ask you to fill out while submitting your portfolio. The exiting questionnaire can be found under the content tab of the Technical/Professional Communications section on your D2L page. After completing the questionnaire, simply submit it to the dropbox just like you submit your portfolio. The questionnaire gives you a chance to write to me personally about your experiences in the Minor, and it gives me hard numbers that I can use to really evaluate what s working. So I really appreciate you taking those five minutes to fill it out after submitting your portfolio. Overjoyed with your new skills? Frustrated about a course? Here s the venue for you fill out the questionnaire and let me know. Portfolio requirements: Key course projects (four pieces total) Short reflective paper Exiting questionnaire 2

5 Technical/Professional Communications Minor Director: Dr. Carla Kungl DHC Wright Hall Technical/Professional Communications is an exciting eighteen-hour interdisciplinary minor offering state-of-the-art preparation for the professional workplace, a perfect complement to almost any major. This program is the most comprehensive minor of its kind in our region. Students in the College of Business, Arts & Sciences, and Education & Human Services can fit this program into their four-year degree plan. Courses offered include two core courses, in technical writing and computer systems, and additional courses in fields ranging from computer design to advertising copy writing, from advanced technical writing to internet communications. Students completing the Technical/Professional Communications Minor will possess up-to-date knowledge and skills that, combined with their major, can lead to careers as a business analyst, editor, market researcher, technical reporter, web developer, media specialist, ad writer/designer, and publications manager. In addition, these skills are often sought as a technical component in many professional positions that are not primarily technical: grant writer, researcher, marketing manager, and graphic designer among many others. 5
