How I Define My Strengths Strength Theme My Definition How I Use It 5

Tell Me About Meet 10 people who have at least one Signature Theme different than your own. Ask them to tell you about a theme that you don t have. Ask them to describe how they use that theme or a benefit of having that theme. Name Theme How They Use It/How it Benefits Them 6

Barrier Labels Our natural talents are not always celebrated. In fact, sometimes they are labeled negatively due to a lack of understanding or perhaps we are not applying them in a productive way. Consider what ways others (or you) have misidentified your talents. Consider what ways your talents are actually assets. Strength Theme Barrier Labels Talent Enablers 7

Putting Your Themes to Work What are some critical activities you need to accomplish this week? List your Signature Themes and five critical activities you will perform this week. Then, identify the theme(s) that will help you meet this week s critical activities. We are most successful and most engaged when we use who we naturally are to fulfill the requirements of our role. 5 Themes Critical Activities What theme(s) will be used? How will l use theme(s) to complete the activity? 9

What I Bring to the Team Your themes each fall under one Leadership Domain: Executing, Influencing, Relationship- Building or Strategic Thinking. Consider your theme and its Leadership Domain. How can you leverage these to positively impact the team? What do you want your team to know about what you can bring? Strength Theme Leadership Domain How I Can Benefit the Team 10

Interviewing From a Strengths Perspective A job interview can be challenging. However, by taking the opportunity to develop and rehearse your responses to frequently asked interview questions, you can reduce your stress and perform more successfully in an interview. Define each of your Signature Themes in your own words (without using the theme word itself) and describe how you use it in your role at work and/or in your personal life. Note: You can also combine themes if you use them together. Theme #1:. How I define & use it: Theme #2:. How I define & use it: Theme #3:. How I define & use it: Theme #4:. How I define & use it: Theme #5:. How I define & use it: 11

Consider each of the following frequently asked interview questions. As you answer each question, compose a response to each question, using your talents and strengths as a basis for your answers. Tell me about yourself. What specific skills and abilities do you bring to our company? What is your greatest weakness? Describe a time when you had a conflict. How did you handle it and how was it resolved? Where do you see yourself in five years? 12

Takeaways from StrengthsQuest Key Points Strengths Philosophy: Building upon your natural talents and strengths is more productive than focusing on fixing your weaknesses. Be able to articulate your talent themes in your own words; let the vocabulary become a part of your everyday speech. Engaged employees are more likely to be happier at work; be an engaged employee! You have a responsibility in securing the good job. Find something that speaks to your strengths or at least find a way to leverage your strengths at work. Homework: In your daily life, pay attention to FLOW when are you in the zone things are coming easily and you feel STRONG. These are clues to your talent. Use your strengths in the resume/cover letter, in the interview and in the workplace. Spend time learning new skills and ways to improve your talent themes and turn them into STRENGTHS. Log back on to Explore your results and check out the Action Planning Guide for ideas on how you and turn your talents into strengths! Download the StrengthsFinder app for your mobile device! Keep tabs on your strengths! Personal Statement of Strength: Combine your top 5 themes and the strengths you are developing into a Personal Statement of Strength or an Elevator Speech. This statement should tell a story about who you are and when you are at your best. Be as creative as you want. Share it with others and get their feedback. Learn it and be comfortable with it so you can use it comfortably when networking and when you are job searching. 15

StrengthsQuest at CSUN s USU We have been using StrengthsQuest at the USU at CSUN for the past 8 years. Below are some of the ways we are currently using it which make it an integral part of our organizational culture. HR and Training - Onboarding: All new staff (student employees included) take the SQ assessment as part of their onboarding - New Employee Training: New employees participate in a half-day training session, which includes a SQ introduction session (approx. 30 minutes) - SQ sessions are offered during our student employee training days (Student Summit), which occur twice per year - Board of Directors retreat has many SQ sessions embedded, giving them a solid foundation for it as individuals and as a team - As-needed (once every year or two) we will hold an in-depth SQ training for staff, giving them information about SQ and how to use it for themselves and for their supervisees - Some departments do preliminary SQ reflections/activities with new hires to get them up-to-speed with the SQ philosophy quickly - Supervisors are encouraged to use strengths language in ongoing feedback as well as formal evaluations - Supervisors/HR can tap into SQ during times of interpersonal conflict to help understand the individuals involved and navigate a path to resolution Meetings - SQ is a standing agenda item at monthly all-staff meetings - Some department managers incorporate SQ into their regular staff meetings and 1:1 s through discussions and team building activities Passive Use/Resources - StrengthsQuest section of intranet, including resources, articles, videos, surveys, etc. - Many choose to incorporate it into signatures and door name plates - Board name plates are printed with the SQ themes of each BOD member below their names so members can see the themes as they interact during the meetings - Monthly s are sent out featuring staff members explaining the themes and how the themes play out for them - We maintain a master list of all employees and their themes (including the leadership domains), which can be separated by department 16
