3 Lab Support Path First stage Second stage Third stage Fourth stage Perform wide range of labs/tasks: prepare samples for assay; ship samples to other labs; perform basic equipment maintenance; work with standard PC applications (Excel, Word, etc.); clean animal cages; check animals for diseases, irregularities in eating/drinking habits; mix & apply topical medications Using good understanding of basic lab procedures, make independent judgments when appropriate, recognize when to seek help; learn different lab techniques & perform these techniques independently; run assays as instructed, maintaining accurate regulatory records & ordering supplies; assure that all equipment is maintained Work completely independently on an assigned task; teach lab technique to others; independent judgments in performing work; assist with clinical care/perform technical procedure with instruction; order supplies incl. pharmaceuticals; maintain records; train staff & investigators May coordinate other employees work; interpret lab results & write protocols based on the investigator's experimental goals, develop assays & work independently Significant attention to detail; follow procedures; Work to understand & execute changes; make timely decisions; take action without being prompted; communicate status; take immediate action when confronted with a problem; values; complete work accurately, with few errors; implement new ideas or potential solutions without prompting; review work & work of others to ensure quality; design processes & procedures to ensure quality; analyze & determine relationship among complex problems & issues Arithmetic skills, basic computer skills; organizational skills; team work; accurately follow instructions; capable of lifting objects; an appreciation for sciences is a plus; English skills optional in some of these positions Up to 1 yr; may have little or no lab experience HS diploma or equivalent; training is provided on the job; learn good lab procedures; opportunities in ESL are available Ability to perform equipment repair, including scheduled maintenance; maintain accurate & detailed records; familiar with specific lab equipment; may need to be familiar in using High Speed Centrifuges, Liquid Chromatographs, HPLC's, Pneumatic or Vacuum Systems, lathes, milling machines, etc.; general lab knowledge such as soldering (either with traditional hot iron or SMD hot air), electronic repair/design, or basic use of tools 1-3 yrs experience, or degree and experience as required by lab. This includes but is not limited to: Associate s degree with 1-3 years experience in basic science and/or technology; Bachelors degree with up to 1 yrs experience; applicable certifications for job position Ability to work completely independently on an assigned task; ability to read & interpret results; read & understand package inserts for assays; ability to teach lab technique to others & communicate effectively with lab users; accurate recordkeeping, ability to order supplies/pharmaceuticals, perform clinical care & technical procedures with direction; good understanding of basic lab procedures; ability to interpret quality assurance data 4-7 yrs experience with degree as required by lab; applicable certifications for job position Good interpersonal/communication skills; writing skills; ability to work with custom computer programs; schedule others' work; interpret lab results; write protocols; develop assays 7-10 yrs experience; Bachelor's degree in science with laboratory work experience; Master s degree desired; continuing education training sessions; courses in specific scientific applications
