1 PERFORMANCE UPDATE FIRST HALF FY18 (JULY - DECEMBER 2017) Who We Are We are people who believe in opportunity. We are a community that builds success. We are made up of motivated job seekers, passionate donors, active volunteers, savvy social investors, corporations with a conscience, and a top-notch dedicated staff. Together, we propel a mission with the strength of many. Through our workforce and leadership development training and social enterprises, we prepare motivated people affected by poverty to unlock their power and purpose to create real and lasting success. How We Measure Impact Our Employment Impact measures all jobs both temporary and permanent secured during this time period. Note that one person may have multiple jobs in their journey (e.g. one or more transitional jobs to build marketability and one permanent placement). These numbers include participants who began their job(s) this year, whether their Cara journey started this year or in a prior year TOTAL JOBS PEOPLE EMPLOYED TRANSITIONAL JOBS EMPLOYMENT IMPACT short-term positions meant to gain experience PERMANENT & LONG-TERM PLACEMENTS high-quality positions that provide stability and advancement opportunities The results of Cara participants jobs are measured in our Societal Impact, including financial earnings and tax contributions, as well as our social return on investment. Finally, our Participant Impact (inside page) gives a sense of who comes to Cara and measures how many people began their journey and secured their first job during this time period. For a full breakdown of how numbers were determined, see our appendix at bit.ly/caraupdate OF PERMANENT & LONG-TERM PLACEMENTS 37 AVERAGE HOURS WORKED WEEKLY AVERAGE WAGE $12.45 EARNED How You Make A Difference 71% ONE-YEAR RETENTION FOR PERMANENT & LONG-TERM PLACEMENTS When people are employed, their lives improve. 2 Who Comes to Cara PARTICIPANT DEMOGRAPHICS Our participants are motivated adults who want to break the cycles of poverty and homelessness by finding more than just a job. They are ready for gainful employment a situation where the net pay, at the very minimum, meets basic-living needs. It is employment through which an individual derives a sense of purpose, pride, and growth; and it is employment that fuels momentum towards a career the kind of success that, once people have a taste of, pushes them to better themselves, their families, and their communities. 19% EDUCATIONAL ATTAINMENT 16% 65% high school GED less than 12th grade We believe we are only at our best when our participants have the abilities to reach these goals. 3 JIM s Story Jim felt lost. For more than 15 years, he was a Catholic priest, presiding over a congregation and serving as a spiritual leader. But to Jim, it wasn t right. Something was missing. But he didn t know what. I left the priesthood in the middle of a recession. All I wanted was to find a job that would fit me, but my search was aimless. I felt withdrawn, directionless, and disappointed in myself. For ten years, Jim job-searched with no real outcome. He would find an odd job here or there but within two weeks, he was back to square one. To avoid having to live in a shelter, he moved back into his parents house. Nearing his mid-50s, he was scared he was going to spend the rest of his life looking for a job. In his job, Jim works out of the Howard terminal, assisting customers at stations on the Red, Purple, and Yellow Lines. Like all jobs it has its challenges, but every day Jim encourages himself to employ a different lesson he learned at Cara such as showing up to work early and ready to start his shift or always giving his all to any task he faces on the job. He has also learned another important lesson to pay it forward. Jim reveals he likes to set aside a little bit of each paycheck to purchase six single-ride tickets to give to CTA riders in need. When I see someone a student, a poor person, someone who needs help I ll give them a ticket. It s a simple gesture, but it really changes someone s day. One guy was so grateful he was thanking me all the way up the stairs to the platform. Today, Jim is excited about what his future holds. He feels confident in himself and his job. He s started saving towards getting his own place to live and is already thinking about advancing in his career with the CTA. I feel like this is a foot in the door for me. When I was unemployed, every day was an off day. I felt aimless. I don t feel that way anymore and I am very grateful to have that. Your support helps Cara participants unlock their power and purpose! Thank you for investing in Jim and others like him. Jim first heard of Cara from a friend. Initially, he struggled with the thought of opening up to others to be emotionally raw. But he realized if he was going to unlock his power and purpose, he was going to need to have a more-open mind. I wasn t good at thinking outside the box, but Cara gave me the skills to do that and to learn more about myself. When you look at yourself and know you have to change, it can be uncomfortable but it can also be rewarding. Cara helped me regain my faith in myself! With his newfound confidence in himself, Jim was able to secure a Customer Service Assistant position with the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) this past October. Immediately, he felt something he had been missing for more than a decade pride. Some of my best memories are from when I was working in high school or college and having that feeling of accomplishment after a full day of work. I have that feeling again.
