1 School of Education Career Services Portal Guide Table of Contents Logging in and registering Completing/Updating your profile Accessing Resources Performing and viewing a mock interview Requesting a coaching appointment Searching for and Applying to Jobs Contact Career Services with questions/issues: SOEJobs@Pitt.edu Logging In and Registering ) Navigate to the Current Grad Students section of the Career Services landing page ) Select SOE Career Services Portal to proceed to the Symplicity site 3) Log in using your Pitt username and password
2 4) Register if necessary* Career Services uploads student information upon enrollment into the school. Therefore, registration is typically unnecessary. On Occasion, depending on the timing of the upload, you may need to first register to gain access to the system (see sample screenshot below) 5) Explore the landing page. From here, you can: Update your profile Access resources (e.g., resume templates) Use the calendar tab to make coaching appointments
3 Completing/Updating Your Profile ) Review your profile to complete any missing information (e.g., degree focus) or to update any changes (e.g., geographic preference); recruiters use this information to identify candidates ) Upload a current resume to apply to positions Accessing Resources ) Navigate to the Resources tab to access the: Document library, which houses resume and cover letter templates, as well as mock interview questions Career Explorer and Career Finder tools, which provides job market information (e.g., projected growth rates) and a general overview of different careers These tools can merely be used to identify different career paths for your degree that might not immediately come to mind 3
4 Performing and Viewing a Mock Interview ) Access the mock interview module under the Resources tab to practice interviewing and have it recorded for your own review or the review of a career coach NOTE: A webcam is required for the module to work properly Review the Mock Interview Student Guide located in the document library for more thorough detail ) Use preexisting question sets or create your own questions to practice For preexisting question sets, use the Recommended Interviews tab, search for a relevant set (e.g., Education) and select Record New Attempt For creating your own question set, select Create New Mock Interview from the Recommended Interviews tab; this option can also be found under the My Mock Interviews tab 4
5 Name your interview; if you have previously saved versions, you can copy your questions from the dropdown menu above the name box Click save and continue to proceed to building your interview Scroll through the subject areas, expanding the sections to reveal questions Hover over questions to reveal and Add button Click Save and Continue once you are complete Start your interview or save it for later Requesting a Coaching Appointment ) Hover over the Calendar tab to select Counseling Appointment ) Select Advising menu from the submenu 3) Select Request New Appointment 5
6 4) Select the type of appointment from the dropdown 5) Set your date range and tick appropriate days of the week to see availability 6) Select the counselor s name you wish to see 7) Press Check Availability/Refine Results 8) Select an appointment time by pressing on the counselor s name to the right ) Provide a brief agenda for the meeting and outline any helpful information in the text box 0) Attached a resume (REQUIRED) and any other applicable documents (e.g., a cover letter, a job description) 8 9 ) Click Submit Request NOTE: Appointments are accepted up to 4 hours prior to the scheduled availability. Cancellation notices are required at least 4 hours in advance. Searching for and Applying to a Job Two job sources are available to students: SOE Jobs (posted directly to our system) and NACELink Network (a job board with a large aggregate of opportunities). Upload a resume (and a cover letter tailored to the job!): To apply to any job through SOE Jobs, you will need a resume uploaded into the system. Please have your resume reviewed by Career Services, a mentor, or a friend prior to using it to apply for a role. ) Hover over the Documents tab ) Select Documents from the dropdown list 6
7 3) Click +Add New to upload a resume Avoid using the resume builder; it is best to have your resume created in word so you can easily apply to other jobs and share it with your network 3 4) Name your file 5) Choose your file and upload it 6) Click submit when finished Search for a Job in SOE jobs: You can use keywords, locations, and organization names to narrow down your results. You can also set search agents to update you when news jobs related to your search criteria are added to the system. ) Hover over Jobs and select SOE Jobs from the dropdown list ) Enter keywords in the search box to narrow your results 7
8 3) Create a search agent to receive updates (not a required step) 4) Click on the job title to be taken the full description 4 3 Apply to a job in SOE Jobs: Once you identify a role, you can apply directly through the system. ) Click Apply beneath the title on the results page OR from within the listing ) Select a resume and cover letter from the dropdown menus 3) Include a formal, succinct, well-structured note to the recruiter (not required) 4) Hit submit 8
9 Searching and Applying to Jobs in NACELink Network: Through this aggregator, you can search for opportunities using keywords and criteria. You are then directed to the employers own job site to apply for the position. Locate NACELink Network under Jobs. Click through to the job board. 9
