Joanna Briggs Institute Comprehensive Systematic Review Training: An Opportunity for Covenant Health Dr. Ann Syme 1, Danielle Baron 1, Melissa Johnson 2, & Sharna Polard 3 1 Palliative Institute 2 Network of Excellence in Seniors Health and Wellness 3 Library Services
Outline 1. Introduction to the Joanna Briggs Institute 2. An opportunity for Covenant Health 3. Creating and submitting a systematic review proposal 4. Conducting the systematic review 5. Moving forward future directions for JBI and Covenant Health
An Introduction to the Joanna Briggs Institute
The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Evidence Based Practice Research Institute since 1996 Royal Adelaide Hospital and the University of Adelaide Not-for-profit 70+ Centres and Groups, >7000 members in over 47 countries Global Leader
The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) International collaboration of health scientists, health professionals and health researchers To improve global health through providing point-of-care access to: Evidence databases Decision support systems Implementation, evaluation and continuous improvement tools
How JBI Functions
Programs
Networks
Members
JBI International Presence JBI is now a global leader in the evidence-based health care movement, often referred to as being among the top three (alongside the Cochrane and Campbell Collaborations) 70+ Collaborating and Affiliate Centers and Groups subscribing health services and university members in 47 countries, and users from 90+ countries
An Opportunity for Covenant Health JBI arose from the recognition of a need for a collaborative approach to the evaluation of evidence derived from a diverse range of sources, including experience, expertise and all forms of rigorous research and the translation, transfer and utilisation of the "best available" evidence into health care practice The mission of the JBI is to improve patient outcomes by ensuring that healthcare professionals have access at pointof-care to the best available international evidence
An Opportunity for Covenant Health Queens University was the first North American organization to lead the development of a JBI collaborating centre in Canada A key aspect following Covenant Health s 2008 reorganization is a heightened commitment for evidence-informed practice; joining the JBI Collaboration will further the work of Covenant Health in its mandate to translate evidence to the point-of-care for patients and families.
JBI Systematic Review Training July Covenant employees from the Palliative Institute, the Network of Excellence in Seniors Health and Wellness, Library Sciences, and Senior Leadership went to Kingston ON to be trained Ann Syme Sharna Polard Barb Roemer Melissa Johnson Sheli Murphy Sandra Vanderzee Danielle Baron Karen Macmillan
Creating and Submitting a Systematic Review Proposal
Creating and Submitting a Systematic Review Proposal Formulate question Develop search strategy Get proposal approved Search for evidence Select studies and conduct review scoping the literature PICO model
Creating and Submitting a Systematic Review Proposal Defining the search strategy: Articulating how you will find relevant articles on your topic: Key terms Databases you will search Inclusion and exclusion criteria for studies Types of studies you will consider Formulate question Develop search strategy Get proposal approved Search for evidence Select studies and conduct review Highly recommended: involve a professional librarian!
Creating and Submitting a Systematic Review Proposal System for the Unified Management, Assessment and Review of Information
Creating and Submitting a Systematic Review Proposal
Creating and Submitting a Systematic Review Proposal
Creating and Submitting a Systematic Review Proposal

Creating and Submitting a Systematic Review Proposal Once the protocol is created in CREMS it can be submitted directly to JBI via the software for review and feedback Formulate question Develop search strategy Get proposal approved Search for evidence Select studies and conduct review
Conducting the Systematic Review: Qualitative Studies
Conducting the Systematic Review Formulate question Develop search strategy Get proposal approved Search for evidence Select studies and conduct review
Conducting the Systematic Review Critical Appraisal of Qualitative Studies Search for studies Critically appraise studies Extract data Data synthesis in QARI Exclude studies
Enter information of all studies into QARI for later critical appraisal by reviewers regarding to include or not Not yet making the judgment to include or not

Extract main findings and data from papers and assign level of credibility Assign a category to each of the findings
Repeat the process of data extraction for each of the included studies
QARI compiles all Findings with your created Categories and synthesizes the evidence from the literature
Implications for the Palliative Institute Palliative Institute as a great place to start for our first JBI review Mandate of the Institute is to alleviate suffering for patients and families JBI will allow us to do this by bringing evidence-based research to practice within Covenant Health
Conducting the Systematic Review: Quantitative Studies
Conducting the Systematic Review 1004 references 832 references scanned 117 studies retrieved 35 studies for Critical Appraisal 172 duplicates 715 do not meet Incl. criteria 82 do not meet Incl. criteria Critical Appraisal of Studies Combining results of poor quality research may lead to biased or misleading estimates of effectiveness Every review must set out to use an explicit appraisal process. A good understanding of research design is required in appraisers

Implications for the Network of Excellence in Seniors Health and Wellness Focus for systematic reviews would be practices, initiatives and services that support seniors across the continuum of care. solutions that foster independence and improve health and functional outcomes for seniors.
Moving Forward Future Plans for JBI and Covenant Health
Moving Forward The JBI model is founded on a strong relationship between academic, research, practice and policy partners. Many academic and practice organizations have internal and public mandates to build capacity in these relationships. If you are interested in finding our more about the JBI organization and the benefits it can bring to your organization, please contact our Co-Directors: Dr. Ann Syme & Glenda Coleman-Miller
