Education and Industry-inspiring connection: Agriculture sector 25 th June 2013 Rutjawate Taharnklaew Assistant Vice President R&D Center, Betagro Group
General Outline Betagro Group in brief Importance of English language in business context ASEAN Visions 2015 The World Competitiveness 2013 Education and Industry Linkage Conclusion Question & Answer 2/40
What does agriculture mean? Agriculture, also called farming or husbandry, is the cultivation of animals, plants, fungi, and other life forms for food, fiber, biofuel, drugs and other products used to sustain and enhance human life Agriculture is the industry or practice of humans purposefully growing crops or raising livestock for the production of foodstuffs that either they can consume directly, they can consume after some process, or they can feed to other livestock/organisms that can themselves be consumed directly or through some process Agriculture refers to the production of food and goods through farming and forestry. Agriculture was the key development that led to the rise of civilization, with the husbandry of domesticated animals and plants (i.e. crops) creating food surpluses that enabled the development of more densely populated and stratified societies. The study of agriculture is known as agricultural science 3/40
Betagro Group s Visions To develop and produce high quality, safe and nutritious food products from our modern and firmly established agroindustrial, research-based operations for the benefit of people around the world 4/40
Betagro s Livestock Value Chain 5/40

Corporate staffing 7/40
Staff turnover 8/40
Staff turnover 9/40
Importance of English language in business English is required for major professionals working in private sector like Betagro. Why is that? 1. Senior management who deal business with foreign partners and/or expatriate who are distributor, suppliers etc in the country. 2. Researcher, scientist, and technical support personnel, veterinarian in particular need to read published paper, technical articles etc and also participate in the international conferences. 3. Export personnel i.e. marketing, sales representation, supporting personnel etc. 4. Executive secretary 5. Corporate communication personnel 6. Purchasing personnel 7. Administrator 10/40
Importance of English language in business 1. English is the primary tool for international communication 2. English is a key component of economic well-being, both nationally and individually. 3. Better English proficiency goes together with higher income, more exports, an easier environment for doing business, and more innovation. 4. Applicant for job who is fluent in English will be more attractive to employer. However, he/she has to show their ability e.g. TOEIC Score, academic background if study abroad etc. 5. Employee who has higher English proficiency will have higher opportunity for the career path. 11/40
English Proficiency of Thai Learners 12/40
English Proficiency of Thai Learners 13/40
English Proficiency of Thai Learners 14/40
English Proficiency of Thai Learners 15/40
English Proficiency of Thai Learners To improve English proficiency of Thai learners needs the right directions and revolution of English teaching and learning in Thailand Desirable skills, competencies, and qualifications demanded by stakeholders have to be taken into consideration when planning a language syllabus In addition, English skills, computer skills and knowledge of cultures need to be integrated into language courses if language teachers want to prepare their students to be able to communicate with their global peers 16/40
ASEAN Vision 2015* 17/40
ASEAN Vision 2015* ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) a) a single market and production base b) a highly competitive economic region c) a region of equitable economic development, and d) a region fully integrated into the global economy The AEC areas of cooperation include: a) human resources development and capacity building b) recognition of professional qualifications c) closer consultation on macroeconomic and financial policies d) Trade financing measures; enhanced infrastructure and communications connectivity e) development of electronic transactions through e-asean f) integrating industries across the region to promote regional sourcing g) enhancing private sector involvement for the building of the AEC * Ref: ASEAN Economic Blueprint 18/40
ASEAN Vision 2015* IN SHORT: the AEC will transform ASEAN into a region with free movement of goods, services, investment, skilled labour, and free flow of capital * Ref: ASEAN Economic Blueprint 19/40
Impact of the AEC on services in Thailand The Liberalization of trade in services will affect Thai services primarily in two aspects: 1) An increase in shares held by foreigners, and 2) Freer mobility of the professional workforce that is an important factor for services businesses. One of the negative impact is a shortage of professional workers due to greater labor mobility in ASEAN. Example: Accountant remuneration in Singapore and Malaysia is about 3 times higher than in Thailand The impact may not be confined to specific sectors differences in the remuneration of accountants will affect every business 20/40
Impact of the AEC on services in Thailand 21/40
Impact of the AEC on services in Thailand Impacts on one sector may help others. The education sector will be facing more intense competition from increasing investment by foreigners, but this competition will lead to the development of students who will compose a quality workforce for other businesses in Thailand BRAIN DRAIN versus BRAIN GAIN 22/40
Impact of the AEC on services in Thailand CONCERNS: 1. Mutual recognition of professional accreditation 2. Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRA) 3. ASEAN has already concluded MRA in 7 fields i.e. Engineering, Surveying Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing Architecture, and Accountancy 4. In practice, it is not easy! Professional barrier: i.e. medical personnel who wish to work in Thailand will have to obtain a license by passing an examination, some parts of which are in Thai Obstacles i.e. differences in language, culture, and social acceptance 23/40
How should business adapt? Opportunity for workforces in these sectors 24/40
