1 EU External Trade Data availability for Import Risk Assessment Pongas, Evangelos Eurostat Unit G.5: International Trade - Production evangelos.pongas@ec.europa.eu Eurostat collects information about external trade statistics from Member States, selected third countries and international organisations. This data is validated, harmonised and stored in the Comext database. Different levels of information are then disseminated on-line or through specific publications to staff of the European Institutions, selected external users, and the public. The database make also data available for production, EFTA and West Balkan Comext is accessible through Internet at: Two types of trade statistics are collected and transmitted to Eurostat: Extrastat (trade between EU Member States and Third Countries) Intrastat (trade between EU Member States) Main actors in Extra-EU trade statistics (Extrastat) Customs Surveys SAD in electronic version Data transmission Businesses National Competent Administration Data preparation and transmission Eurostat SAD in paper version Data transmission Customs VAT declarations Joint AESAN/EFSA Workshop Science Supporting Risk Surveillance of Imports - 10 February 2010, Seville (Spain)
2 Main actors in Intra-EU trade statistics (Intrastat) Business Electronic or paper Intrastat declarations SAD declarations (for goods release for free circulation after being imported for processing) National Competent Administration Data preparation and transmission Eurostat Basic information collected and disseminated at EU level refers to: Product code; Partner country; Flow (Imports, Exports); Reference period (month); Value (euro); Net mass (kg); Supplementary unit quantity (specific). Only for Extrastat: Statistical procedure (normal, for processing ); Preference (MFN, GSP etc.); Mode of transport at the frontier; Nationality of the means of transport crossing the frontier; Container. The above data are also transformed and disseminated according the following product classifications: Harmonised System (HS); Standard International Trade Classification (SITC); Broad Economic Categories (BEC); Statistical Classification of Products by Activity (CPA); Standard Goods Classification for Transport Statistics/Revised (NSTR).
