1 PREFACE The overall aim of this compendium is to facilitate easy access to the world of standards, with relation to shipping- and shipbuilding. Persons employed in the many branches of the maritime world very often feel lost when in need for specific information. Every time a new project, big or small, is initiated, the very first question is; what have others done in similar cases. As a result hereof, a search for applicable information to the project is normally commenced. It is within this spacious offing the compendium hopefully will produce its assistance. ISO/TC-8 presents this publication with the expectation, that contributing instructions to revise and improve the content of this compendium, will be submitted to the ISO/TC-8 SC9 secretariat. GUIDANCE TO THE TABLE OF CONTENTS The value of this compendium lies in the fact that for each mentioned standard a supplementary abstract is given to the main title of the standard. Normative for content for this compendium is the 1995 ISO-catalogue review of subject structure. A derivation of applicable standards to the maritime sector is obtained by scrutinizing latter mentioned. In the event of incomplete coverage in search to specific standard for a given topic, reference should be made to subject structure of current ISO-catalogue.
