1 1 (5) ESD Packages Abstract This document is a compilation of ESD-requirements and information on packages. Application These instructions (or other documents specifying equivalent requirements) are to be applied at all Ericsson units where devices are handled, administered and processed. The specifications of this standard or equivalent ESD protection requirement are to be applied by external suppliers of services and products. 2 2 (5) 1 General This document describes Ericsson s interpretation of IEC as regards the requirements to be met by packages. 2 Terminology/definitions ESD EPA ElectroStatic Discharge ESD-protected area ElectroStatic Discharge Sensitive device In Ericsson standards, all electronic components, printed board assembly (PBA), and encapsulated products with unprotected connectors are referred to. 3 Requirements : The handling chain shall have unbroken continuous ESD protection from the supplier to the end user. This applies to defective materials as well. Non-: (for instance mechanical parts) Parts handled within EPA shall be packed according to par. 3.2 to avoid damages on. 3.1 Characteristics of packages Taking into account their respective functions, packages are divided into characteristics as described below. S =Electrostatic Discharge Shielding D = Electrostatic Dissipative C = Electrostatic Conductive

Transport boxes (C) with lifting holes in their side-plates are to be secured by means of inner side-plates positioned between the lifting hole and the device Interior- and support packages If a need of interior/support package they must be of diversionary (D) or conductive (C) material. ATTENTION! Interior/support packages must not be made of chargeable plastics, tapes, component trays, SMT-reels etc. Packaging materials (for instance cellular plastic, painted cardboards etc.) not possessing any of the above characteristics must not occur within EPA.

4 3.3 Demands during use of wood, corrugated paperboard or cardboard If the air humidity is above 35% RH, packages made out of wood, corrugated paperboard and cardboard (ATTENTION! not plasticcoated, or painted) can be introduced in EPA. 4 (5) If the air humidity is below 35% RH, a safety distance of minimum 1.5 meters from shall be applied if packages made out of wood, corrugated paperboard and cardboard (ATTENTION! not plasticcoated, or painted) are introduced in EPA. 3.4 Marking of packages Symbol for characteristics of packages * * = Primary function S = Electrostatic Discharge Shielding D = Electrostatic Dissipative C = Electrostatic Conductive Marking of packed goods to Ericsson from supplier All packages directly delivered to EPA shall be marked with the following information: - manufacturer or supplier - ESD symbol (see above) - type denotaion of goods Marking of purchased packaging material Packages shall, when being delivered to the Ericsson Corporation, be marked according to SP (SP-Method 2472, paragraph 6.3): - manufacturer or supplier - ESD symbol (see above) - type denotation of packaging material. Packages with limited time for durability shall in addition be marked with - date of manufacturing. According to other packages, demands are specified in the 1301 document.

5 3.5 Inspection of packaging material 5 (5) Inspection may be carried out according to 1701-FCH (packaging materials). This inspection do not fulfill the demands for type approval. 3.6 Type approval Packaging materials shall be certified by the Swedish Testing and Research Institute (also known under its Swedish abbreviation SP), or any other national testing institute, in accordance with SP-Method Rejection of packages Packages of limited durability time shall be rejected as soon as the period of durability time expires (to be decided by testing). Inspection shall be carried out according to 1701-FCH (ageing materials). Shielding bags shall be rejected if they have holes or if they have become wrinkled with sharp creases. 3.8 Receiving inspection of packages To be performed as prescribed by each individual unit.
