RFID Technology Radio Frequency Identification technology is a proven object tracking and automated data collection solution. It provides a contact less data link, without need for line-of-sight or concerns about harsh or dirty environments that restrict other auto ID technologies such as bar codes. RFID systems consist of two main components: Transponder (or tag) located in the object for identification Interrogator (or reader), which allows the data transfer to and from the transponder Interrogator The interrogator is the interface between the application software and the transponder. It consists of a radio frequency module, a control and communication module and an antenna. Reading and writing distances can vary from a few millimeters to several meters depending on the technology used (active/passive, frequency, dimension of the antennas etc.) The shape and size of a system consisting of an interrogator and antennas may considerably vary. It consists of an electronic chip and an antenna. In the case where a passive transponder is the interrogator, which wirelessly supplies the energy, the active transponder contains its own power source (battery). The transponders themselves may be embedded into differently shaped and sized casings. 11 Other Applications LPG Cylinder Tracking Globees propose three solutions for the cylinder-tracking requirement. Low Frequency Solution: LF results in a better performance in the metallic requirement. However, the read distance shall be limited to less than 1 meter. Ultra High Frequency Solution: UHF results in better read distance. However, the metal content shall have detrimental effect on its performance. Expected Read range is approx. 1 meter. High Frequency Solution: This offers a read range of a few centimeters. Given the low read range it is advisable to use Hand Held readers/ conveyer belt reader at close range.
