The company tested several models, including the all-new TriPac e system, over the past several months. In the end, Wild West Express chose the new Thermo King system. The TriPac e has done a great job, says Woody Crawford, Wild West vice president. We haven t had any downtime with the unit and are very pleased with the performance. The TriPac etm APU system delivers clean, reliable power to keep drivers cool and comfortable while running quietly and emission-free, all while saving fuel and maintenance costs. The system runs on batteries, which are charged by the tractor s alternator while driving. Charge and discharge flow are controlled and optimized with Thermo King s Smart Charger Module technology. Heat and the plug-in shore power are both available options. At Wild West, we prefer Thermo King equipment over other equipment because of it greater dependability, says Crawford. After testing several battery-based APU systems, we chose the TriPac e because of that dependability and because of our previous positive experience with the engine-based TriPac systems. Wild West runs 105 refrigerated trailers with Thermo King units, which amounts to over 95 percent of their refrigerated fleet. The company has built a solid relationship with Thermo King West, Inc., the local Thermo King dealer in El Paso, Tex. Thermo King s dealer network is very supportive, and Thermo King West has been a great partner in business, says Crawford. 3 Thermo King Launches All-New Electric APU System T hermo King has launched the TriPac e, an all-new electric auxiliary idle reduction and temperature management system. The TriPac e is the first electric auxiliary power unit (APU) from Thermo King, the industry leader in idle reduction technology, and provides a clean, sustainable choice for those customers looking for APU options. The TriPac e system is designed to maintain comfortable temperature conditions in the truck cab without running an engine. It is a battery-powered solution that uses sophisticated power management technology to optimize energy used. After listening to customer needs and performing extensive field and lab tests, Thermo King designed the TriPac e to deliver the following results to customers: Cost Savings. The TriPac e is an electric, battery-based APU system, which means significant fuel savings. Reduced operation of the tractor engine also delivers cost savings on maintenance. Clean, Quiet Operation. Because no diesel engine is used, the TriPac e runs clean and emission-free in cooling mode, and is significantly quieter than engine-based APU systems. 4 Fresh Express and Brent Redmond Transportation Team Up for Sustainability Thermo King s SmartPower Electric Standby Saves Fuel and Reduces Emissions F resh Express, Inc., of Salinas, Cal. and Brent Redmond Transportation of Hollister, Cal. have joined together in an effort to reduce emissions at the Fresh Express facility in Salinas. Fresh Express, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Chiquita Brands, is the number one maker of fresh salads in the United States and sold the first ready-to-eat packaged salad in grocery stores nationwide in Founded in 1987, Brent Redmond Transportation, Inc. is one of the leading refrigerated transportation companies in the Western United States. As part of their deep commitment to environmental sustainability, Fresh Express began the project by installing electric power hookups at the loading docks of its Salinas facility. Next, Fresh Express brought in Brent Redmond Transportation, which utilizes Thermo King SB-210+ trailer units with SmartPower electric standby. The units run without using diesel engines at the loading dock. While the trailers are being pre-cooled and loaded, the units operate from the electric power hookups. Brent Redmond Transportation has purchased six of the units so far, and have plans to purchase more as additional hookups are installed. SmartPower electric standby, available on the Thermo King SB-210+ trailer units that Brent Redmond is using as well as other Thermo King trailer units, delivers many environmental and cost-saving benefits beyond reducing emissions. Those benefits include less noise, reduced maintenance costs, a reduced life cycle cost and a longer lifespan for the unit. Since starting the program in January, Fresh Express has prevented the release of at least 77 pounds of carbon from entering the atmosphere each day, according to Tom Shepherd, vice president of transportation for Fresh Express. Shepherd noted that the savings they are realizing could drive expansion, since it costs 25 to 30 percent less to pre-cool the trailer with electricity than with diesel power. 4 A Matter of Degrees This program is a continuation of Chiquita s commitment to environmental sustainability, Shepherd said. Michael Johanson, who handles transportation, co-manufacturing, warehousing and logistics for Chiquita Brands International, said the estimated annual emissions reduction from this project could be as much as 30,000 pounds of CO 2. The two companies worked closely with Thermo King of Salinas, Inc. to get the program set up. Brent Redmond Transportation has been a leader in technology and equipment since the company was founded, says Alvin Trentelman, C.E.O at Thermo King of Salinas, Inc. It was the first Californiabased carrier to install Qualcomm and one of the first to use Thermo King s OptiSet and Pocket Wintrac products as well as OptiSet Plus, which they used to create named temperature profiles specifically for Fresh Express loads. 6 Kreilkamp Trucking Growing Strong for 75 Years A fourth-generation family business, Kreilkamp Trucking of Allenton, Wisc., has seen, endured, and accomplished much in its 75 years. The company, which started out transporting livestock, grew gradually through the years as a dry van hauler exclusively until That s the year a computer company customer of Kreilkamp started shipping to Denver. Kreilkamp decided to add a refrigeration unit to the trailer to pick up some return loads, officially entering the refrigerated freight business. As irony would have it, Kreilkamp s customer lost their west-bound account just six weeks later. But Kreilkamp never looked back only forward as they found new customers to utilize the reefer. Today, the company owns 350 tractors all with Thermo King TriPac APUs, and more than 1,000 trailers 315 of which are refrigerated. We are proud of our company, business practices, and reputation, said Mike Kreilkamp, vice president of maintenance and purchasing. My great grandfather, John H. Kreilkamp, started this company in 1935 with determination and hard work. I m sure he never dreamed it would be around 75 years later with 500+ employees, successfully growing through so many generations, which included my grandfather Walter; my father John R. (who, along with his wife Jeanne, remain as chairmen of the board), and now my brother Tim (president), sister Amanda Kreilkamp-Kirk (vice president driver services), and me. We also rely on CFO Jamie Danner. Of course, 75 years of success is no accident and involves much more than irony. The company remains focused on running routes east of the Mississippi (both dry van and refrigerated), retaining a solid driver base, maintaining quality equipment, and staying profitable. And they ve done all of that despite industry highs and lows through the years. A solid, dependable driver base is a key to our success; our drivers are instrumental to on-time delivery and safety on the road, said Kreilkamp, and we have long understood that. We hire quality drivers, pay them well, are sensitive to family time, and provide well-maintained equipment with the technology and comforts that make life on the road easier. Kreilkamp Trucking has approximately 350 drivers 277 of which are over-the-road and regional company drivers, 7 are contracted owner operators and the balance are local/day cab drivers. Equipment is maintained by Kreilkamp s 20 in-house mechanics. All tractors and trailers returning to base automatically undergo a 4-minute drive-through inspection in the company s 80-foot pit. Trailers parked in the yard are checked every 4 hours to ensure integrity, and every time a reefer is washed, a pre-cycle is run to reduce the chances for on-the-road problems. We believe in proactive maintenance, so that we don t have to be reactive on the road, explained Kreilkamp. When it comes to the actual equipment chosen, Kreilkamp Trucking believes its long-term vendor relationships with companies like Thermo King, Peterbilt and Freightliner are a key factor to dependability. The company s fleet is nearly exclusive with all three brands. By partnering together, a better understanding of business practices and needs is gained and a trust is formed. We have 30-year partnerships with our vendors, and it s difficult to put a value on that, said Kreilkamp. While the company does its own on-site reefer maintenance, it utilizes Badger Trailer & Equipment, the local Thermo King dealership, for new reefer purchases and weekly parts needs. We send a mobile parts vehicle out to Kreilkamp Trucking twice a week to take care of them, said Wayne Perrins, general manager of Badger Trailer & Equipment. We also signed the company up for Thermo King s SVC centralized billing program so if drivers need need help out on the road with a unit, they can go to any Thermo King dealership to receive one guaranteed rate and invoice. In commemorating its 75 th year, Kreilkamp Trucking called on its vendors to help them create a special anniversary trailer with a Thermo King SB-210 reefer. Both are painted Kreilkamp s signature Viper Red and include some flashy features such as extra chrome, lights and a mural depicting Kreilkamp through the years. In celebrating such a big year, we thought a show trailer would be a great way to display our pride, said Kreilkamp. While the trailer shows images from our past, it represents the future for us as well. We re excited to see where it leads us. Since then, they ve been waiting for it to come to the U.S. For Edible Arrangements, the size of the Transit Connect and the fuel efficiency it provides fits the company s needs perfectly. Many of the company s franchisees are beginning to replace older, larger cargo vans with Transit Connects through the company s fleet program. So far, Edible Arrangements has purchased 20 Transit Connects, and plans are under way to buy 15 to 20 more vehicles each month as more and more franchisees replace older delivery vans.
