2 New business models and increase in productivity Heidelberg receives two InterTech Technology Awards 2016 for innovative products Omnifire 250 4D printing system enables printing on objects Stahlfolder TH 82-P increases productivity by up to 50 percent Printing Industries of America (PIA), the association of the American printing industry, awarded the Omnifire 250 4D printing system and the Stahlfolder TH 82-P folding machine with the renowned InterTech Technology 2016 Award. Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) thus received two of the six prizes for this year. PIA has been awarding these distinctions since 1978, and Heidelberg is now rewarded with the 35th and 36th star for outstanding and innovative products. The InterTech jury agreed that the Omnifire 250 represents a breakthrough in the decoration of three-dimensional objects. The Stahlfolder TH 82-P folding machine was attested a major engineering achievement for introducing the principle of shingled sheet feeding known from the PFX feeder which already received an award back in 2012 as shingled folding to all folding stations of the folding machine. Both products were new presentations at this year s drupa and exactly met the needs of the printing industry for new applications and improved productivity. Future-oriented digital printing applications The Omnifire 250 printing system in particular supports new and innovative business models as well as futureoriented printing applications, with which the customer can command attractive prices on the market. This includes versioned, customized, and personalized print products or the direct printing on three-dimensional surfaces. Examples of personalized and flexible printing on various three-dimensional objects are balls, drinking bottles, and other mass-produced items, especially from the consumer goods industry. Heidelberg will present the Omnifire 1000, the system s next stage of development, at the InPrint 2016, which will be held in Milan this year from 15 to 17 November. It can be used to print on objects with a diameter of up to one meter. The PFX feeder forms the basis, ensuring reliable separation of the folded sheets and feeding the sheets to the folding machine in a stream of shingled stock. The increase in productivity of up to 50 percent is also achieved through an innovative sheet guide, which permits shingled folding through the entire folding machine at minimal speed. This means that processing of more sheets in the same time is now also possible in the folding stations. The folding machine can thus keep up with the high productivity of the press. The leading Austrian print shops agensketterl, AV+Astoria, and Grasl FairPrint have consolidated their production under a single roof, resulting in one of the largest commercial print shops in any German-speaking country. Although the production facilities in Bad Vöslau are shared, the companies still function independently in the market. With this step we re now at a competitive size where we can expand our activities in Austria together, explains Walter Grasl, Managing Director of Grasl FairPrint. As part of this we needed to look for a solution for our joint postpress. We started from the ground up in a few departments, investing in innovative machine concepts for economical and efficient production. The successful bid for the folding technology went to Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) due to their two-pronged approach of initial intensive consultation followed by the development of an overall concept across all three print shops on the basis of existing job evaluations, the respective job structures, and the run lengths. The original sixteen folding machines have now been trimmed down to eight, including two high-performance Stahlfolder TX 96 machines with the innovative PFX feeder and two Stahlfolder TH 66 machines. A new Polar PACE CuttingSystem will be added in September for optimum cutting processes also. 200 million folded sheets per year All the new machines have been up and running in the new print facility in Bad Vöslau since April of this year, and Walter Grasl has had time to form an initial impression. As soon as I saw the new PFX pallet feeder technology presented at drupa 2012, I knew it had potential. The feeder operates on the same principle as a press feeder. The sheets are shingled when they arrive in the feeder and also when they get to the folding unit, which ensures a throughput rate that is up to 50 percent higher than with conventional cross-fold production. We re processing all our 16-page signatures on the two Stahlfolder TX 96 machines. These two machines are handling what we needed eight machines for before. They can keep up no problem with our presses high output, our job throughput is faster, and we don t need to work at the weekends any more. The two machines are overseen by three operators, who are optimally supported by the high level of automation. Walter Grasl is also impressed by the high operational performance of 15,000 to 20,000 sheets per hour combined with low machine speed, high availability, and stable production. The two Stahlfolder TX 96 machines are integrated into the workflow of the full-service print shop via the Prinect Postpress Manager. This means that the latest data about job quantities and times is available in real time. Folding work for multiple ups, multiple concertina folds, or special applications is done on the two new Stahlfolder TH 66 machines. As with the printing presses, Heidelberg has also provided a preventative maintenance schedule for the postpress machines to prevent downtimes. We process 200 million folded sheets per year and the overall concept that Heidelberg came up with is a perfect fit for our need for maximum productivity and short makeready times so that we can guarantee our customers same-day delivery for many products. Process optimization doesn t stop there For Grasl FairPrint, their focus is on the customer, and their motto is Fair to people & the environment. It has customers in the greater Vienna area as well as throughout Austria and beyond. Today Grasl FairPrint has over 180 employees working in three shifts to produce a wide range of advertising materials as well as books, company reports, and catalogs. The press room houses 38 printing units in the formats 35 x 50, 70 x 100, and 100 x 145, from both Heidelberg and other manufacturers. Walter Grasl is already working on the next projects, including further expanding networking in postpress, for example using the remote capability of the new folding machines, in order to implement remote maintenance. As well as increasing the transparency of the production data, this should also optimize the logistical processes around the folding machines. We want to keep impressing our customers with fast processes, the right expertise, and the high-quality of our printed products, explains Walter Grasl, who sees this as a way of gradually implementing his vision of an integrated and automated print shop. 4 Wenig proves very successful The Berlin-based industrial book bindery Richard Wenig specializes in the fields of cutting, folding, saddle stitching and perfect binding. When modernizing the available machinery this spring, the company put a POLAR CuttingSystem 200 PACE into operation. Managing director Richard Wenig relies on ultra-modern machinery in order to safeguard the company s long-term survival on the market as a specialized industrial bookbindery. To respond to the growing gap between lower prices and rising costs it needs to process more material year on year, or in other words, increase productivity. State-of-the-art machinery In order to remain a reliable and flexible business partner that continues to offer high quality, Richard Wenig has modernized the entire machinery over the past four years. Thanks to the perfect binder installed in 2015 Wenig managed to achieve markedly increased productivity and therefore also replaced its saddlestitcher and the folding machines one by one. As efficiency increased, however, cutting was becoming a real bottleneck for production operations. As a result, the company added the last piece of the puzzle - CuttingSystem 200 PACE made by POLAR. Increased performance owing to POLAR CuttingSystem 200 PACE Taking the pressure off our operators was the major point for choosing the PACE from POLAR, managing director Richard Wenig explains. And he continues: Finding specialized personnel is not easy. This makes the subject of ergonomics so important for me. POLAR PACE offers an automated cutting process. While the machine does the cutting fully automatically, the operator can focus on the jogging process and, in this way, lay the foundation for the high quality of the final product. Wenig is extremely satisfied with his investment: I am happy to have taken this step. Not only because the cutting division has regained a high level of productivity but also, because our operators enjoy their work much more than before. Changing from the manual cutting system to the automated PACE system was no problem at all for our operators. About Richard Wenig Buchbinderei GmbH The company was founded as a craft bookbindery four generations ago. In the third generation, the firm finally dared to take the first step into industrial bookbindery. It turned out to be such a success that the available premises were soon no longer big enough. In 2001 the business therefore moved to the present site in Berlin s Montanstraße. In 2008, Richard Wenig took over management of the company. This year, he not only modernized the machinery, but also extended the production floor by building an annex adding 300 sq.mtrs. Wenig recently also integrated the still existing craft bookbindery into the company. With a staff of 25 employees working in two shifts, Richard Wenig Buchbinderei is well established in the area of Berlin-Brandenburg (Germany).
