Schedule Coordination for Molybdenum-99 Supply Reliability Bernard PONSARD Co-Chairman AIPES Security of Supply Working Group The National Academies NAS-RAS Joint Mo-99 Symposium Opportunities and Approaches for Supplying Molybdenum-99 and Associated Medical Isotopes to Global Markets Vienna (Austria) July 17, /11
AIPES Security of Supply Working Group Table of content : Mission of the AIPES Security of Supply Working Group Research s involved in the AIPES SoS WG Emergency Response Team (ERT) AIPES CAPACITY MODEL (previously VERSAILLES Model) 2/11
Mission of the AIPES Security of Supply Working Group The AIPES s & Isotopes Working Group (AIPES R&I WG) has been recently renamed into AIPES Security of Supply Working Group (AIPES SoS WG). The AIPES SoS Working Group brings together research reactor operators involved in the production of medical radioisotopes, processors, generator manufacturers and radiopharmaceutical producers. The main goal of the AIPES SoS WG is to achieve the best possible coordination of the reactor operating periods in order to provide an optimal global coverage during planned reactor shutdown periods for refuelling, maintenance and installation of dedicated equipments for research programs. This coordination is mandatory to ensure continuous production and an optimal supply of radiopharmaceuticals and therapy sources to hospitals all year round. The main medical radioisotopes produced by the research reactors are Mo-99/Tc-99m, Lu-177, Sr-89, Sm-153, Ir-192, I-131, Xe-133, 3/11
Research s involved in the AIPES SoS WG The production of Mo-99/Tc-99m in particular is very sensitive to any unplanned unavailability of research reactors because of the short half lives T1/2 (66h/6h) of both radioisotopes and the fact that it is not possible to build stocks of these products. Initially, the AIPES SoS WG concentrated on European research reactors but following severe disruptions in 2010 especially, the group incorporated all global research reactors: BR2 (Belgium) HFR (The Netherlands) OSIRIS (France) >>> definitive shutdown since December 2015 MARIA (Poland) LVR-15 (Czech Republic) NRU (Canada) >>> ceased routine Mo-99 production in 11/2016 SAFARI (South Africa) OPAL (Australia) RA-3 (Argentina) FRM-II (Germany) >>> will start Mo-99 production (LEU) in 2019 JHR (France) >>> will start Mo-99 production (LEU) in /11

Emergency Response team (ERT) Several actions have been taken by the AIPES Security of Supply Working Group in the past years to improve the Mo-99 production monitoring and provide suitable communication to stakeholders. The ERT (Emergency Response Team) has been created in 2012 within the AIPES Security of Supply Working Group to follow production and supply issues week by week through conference calls if requested. This continuous follow-up allows to identify potential Mo-99 shortages and to define action plans with research reactors, processors and generator manufacturers, including support for fresh and irradiated targets shipments. Special attention is also given to secure the supply of other medical radioisotopes as Lu-177. Asaresult, therewereno significant supply shortages during the past years within the supply chain. 7/11
The "VERSAILLES Mo-99 MODEL" has been developed and validated by AIPES in 2014 based on data provided in the OECD/NEA (2013/2014/2015) reports and feedback delivered by the AIPES representatives (processors and generators manufacturers) for the years 2013, 2014, 2015 and The model AIPES CAPACITY MODEL is monitoring week by week the maximum reactor capacity available per week for the global production of Mo-99 is a suitable tool to assist scheduling the reactor operating periods with respect to an optimal security of Mo-99 production is able to identify periods at risk whichneedtobefurther investigated at processor and generator manufacturer level has been recently renamed into AIPES CAPACITY MODEL" 8/11
