RCS-DISPO The rail control system for all situations.
SBB We keep Switzerland moving. Travel in comfort. Get there in time. The Swiss are world champions in rail travel. Every day, some 11,000 trains travel on SBB s more than 3,000-kilometre-long track network, bringing 1.25 million people to their destination. SBB also transports 210,000 tonnes of freight on its railways every day. These impressive figures are un-matched anywhere in the world. Managing such vast volumes day after day is no mean feat. The continued expansion of railway services and the growing demand for freight transport services are leading to ever greater traffic density. To enable it to control rail traffic safely, punctually and efficiently, SBB has developed its own Rail Control System (RCS) for train dispatching and monitoring. A range of applications can be added on to RCS, making it well equipped to deal with present and future challenges. RCS-Dispo is the leading dispatching software in Switzerland it s not just SBB that relies on it, but BLS and SOB too. In late 2016, the Belgian rail infrastructure operator Infrabel also successfully switched over to RCS-Dispo. Philippe Gauderon Head of SBB Infrastructure, Member of the Management Board Reap the benefits of Swiss precision 2

SBB railway operations with RCS-D Operational staff are responsible for implementing the planned timetable. For this to be possible, all timetable data must be correctly programmed into the route setting system RCS-Dispo and the customer information systems. The operational planners create a daily schedule for each day as adjustments to the timetable are often needed, for example in the case of maintenance and construction work. Where necessary, they plan diversions and fill in any gaps with extra trains ordered at short notice by the railway undertakings. Follow-up measures for rail traffic control. The specialists in the Infrastructure Operation Centre and the train-control centres continually monitor how the timetable is implemented, what happens when incidents occur and how information is provided to customers. The quality managers are consulted in order to define measures that are then put in place in the preparation and execution of rail traffic control. Operating Center Infrastructure Bern Operation Cen Olt Managing incidents. In the event of incidents on the track network, the dispatchers implement the necessary actions in the traincontrol centres. If necessary, they alert the emergency intervention team. In the case of national incidents that have a major impact on the network, the employees of the Infrastructure Operation Centre work together with the railway undertakings to put the necessary measures in place for ensuring that railway services can continue to run. In addition to RCS-Dispo, the communication tool RCS-ALEA is also used in these situations. Operation Centre West Lausanne 4

In the SBB train-control centres, the dispatchers and rail traffic controllers work around the clock seven days a week to make sure that everything runs according to the timetable. If deviations occur, they take the necessary actions to ensure that traffic can get back on track with the timetable as soon as possible. RCS-Dispo is the backbone of the RCS system family, ensuring efficient operations in the train-control centres.
RCS-Dispo The rail control system for all situations. THE RAIL CONTROL SYSTEM (RCS) IS THE MOBILITY SOLUTION OF THE FUTURE. RCS PROVIDES A REAL-TIME OVERVIEW OF THE OPERATIONAL SITUATION. RCS-Dispo ensures a standardised picture of processes, i.e. realtime timetable display, for all units and staff members involved in rail service procedures. To do this, RCS-Dispo brings together information relevant to rail services from various systems in a standardised user interface. Every two seconds, RCS-Dispo calculates a status forecast for the entire Swiss track network for as much as 90 minutes into the future. Although this forecast covers approximately 4,000 trains, the calculation only takes a maximum of one second. RCS-Dispo detects occupancy conflicts between trains that want to use the same track and suggests ways to resolve the issue. The system also detects turnaround and connection conflicts. RCS-Dispo gives dispatchers and rail traffic controllers an overview of all information at all times. The most important graphs in RCS- Dispo are the time/path line diagram, the train graph, the connection matrix and the main track occupancy plan. Capacity figures. RCS detects one million possible conflicts every day, thus offering exceptional timetable stability and optimising some 2,000 route setting operations. On average, RCS-Dispo processes 3,000 reports a second. At peak times, this can be as many as 15,000. For the information that RCS-Dispo publishes, there are 50,000 instances of read-only access and 1,500 instances of write access per second all with a reaction time of just one millisecond. 6
High requirements for performance and availability. Reaction and processing times of under one second for 90 percent of incoming train number telegrams, assignments to be performed, etc. This means that 240 train number telegrams and 25 assignments can be processed every second. The availability of the systems (including maintenance windows) is 99.8 percent. Failover requirements: it takes a maximum of 20 seconds to switch from one server to the oth-er. Business continuity requirements: in the event of a disaster, it takes no longer than 15 seconds to start up the system at a second location. The maintenance window is one hour maximum and can be performed six times a year. High requirements for performance and availability. 8 The RCS modules. The RCS-Dispo system is made up of various RCS modules. All these modules are designed to interact efficiently with one another and also offer services for applications outside the RCS assembly. The most important modules are: Graphical user interface (GUI) Infrastructure data Production timetable Operational situation Forecast Real Time GUI/dispatching Timetable Time/path lines Train path import Formation information Route management Train graph Operational situation Processing of current train locations Target/actual comparison Current infrastructure occupancy Main track occupancy plan Infrastructure Topology management Closures and restrictions Speed restrictions Connection matrix Forecast Train run forecast Connection management Conflict identification Key: Functions of the Rail Control System. 8
Graphical user interface (GUI) module. RCS-Dispo has several standardised views, allowing users to customise these according to their needs and preferences. The process map of train movements and the networkwide simulation of the entire rail traffic system up to 90 minutes into the future are also available in real time. The various views support the tasks and needs of the following user groups: Dispatchers, with a focus on the next few minutes and up to four hours. Rail traffic controllers, with a focus on the next few seconds and up to the next minute. Passenger Division Operation Centre/Info Centre (customer centre) without a time-limited view. Administrator/initialisation of views and configuration (GUI) with constant time-based view. RCS-Dispo includes a process-based server system with a highly available and distributed cache system (JCache-compatible). Clients with up to eight high-resolution monitors with Eclipse RCP. Messaging system for train location transmission via Tibco Rendezvous to 16 distributed locations. Client-server business communication is also performed via Tibco Rendezvous. Ansicht Haupt-Gleis-Belegungs-Plan. Overview of connection matrix. 9
Production timetable module. RCS-Dispo uses two types of timetables. The production timetable (accurate to the second) is the most important for dispatch. The target timetable comprises the commercial and service timetables (accurate to the minute). However, the target timetable is still a part of RCS-Dispo as it enables a constant comparison between target and actual data. This is needed for forecasting future developments and identifying conflicts. In order to do this, RCS-Dispo receives the production data every day that gives information about the actual implementation of the timetable on every track. In order to create a production timetable, the operating points at which train runs begin and end must be known. Timetable data is also needed to identify the times at which trains are scheduled to depart and arrive. It is also necessary to know which rolling stock is located on which infrastructure. The production timetable is sufficient for describing a train run according to the principles of an event-constraint model. It defines the train run as a sequence of events (departure/ arrival) with constraints (journey, stops, connections, train sequence, journey interruptions). This enables all available infrastructure installations to be depicted individually and provided with target values based on the event-constraint model. A highly detailed production timetable can be generated in this way. By comparing this standardised data for the permanent way, a precise image of the target timetable and the production timetable can be created for the individual infrastructure installations. Overview of time/path line diagram. 10
Operational situation (real-time monitoring) module. Every train needs a secured path which is defined by a start and end point (both at a signal). In order to monitor this in near-real-time, real-time monitoring receives network-wide adapter messages on a constant basis in the form of telegrams from the security installations and control technology and offsets these against the actual data on the train (train number), position and route. The current train-path occupancy and the departure and arrival times at all operating points and signals are compared with the data from the infrastructure model and sent to the GUI. This means that the information from train runs that are currently delayed is sent directly to the customer and to the forecast calculation. This enables the actual status of the operational situation to be constantly updated. The incoming messages are used to compare the target and actual data for each element of the production timetable. In the event of deviations, RCS-Dispo automatically triggers a process that updates the production timetable and initiates a new forecast. Overview of train graph. 11
Infrastructure data module. The infrastructure module is the basis for various rail management and rail services systems. The SBB topology database UNO (Unified Network Objects) creates logical connections between the external installations (tracks, points, signals) and the data for digital control technology. Data on operating points and main tracks is stored for planning purposes. The UNO topology database thus provides uniform mapping and visualisation of the required and available infrastructure. For even greater flexibility and performance, some infrastructure components from the topology database are converted into RCS-internal infrastructure models ( InfraDOM ). These models provide a more specific overview, make access easier and improve performance. InfraDOM makes standardised, comprehensive track data available every day (available routes, closures, speed thresholds, length profiles and locations). This data is directly incorporated into the production timetable. Forecast module. When implementing the planned timetable, there are always incidents to contend with. Every intervention by dispatchers and rail traffic controllers has consequences whose effects must also be taken into account. RCS-Dispo uses a highly detailed infrastructure model (InfraDOM) to constantly update the production timetable as well as arrival and departure times, not just at the operating points but also at signals and stopping points. As the production timetable is based on an event-constraint model, RCS-Dispo can project the current status into the future with the utmost efficiency for the network as a whole and for all trains on the forecast horizon. By comparing the actual data to a sequence of events, the Forecast module calculates the possible delays and conflicts for every position in the infrastructure model. This enables the module to identify occupancy conflicts in addition to delays. The forecast module has three types of forecast for potential conflicts: Ideal forecast: Calculation based on the production timetable for every train run, regardless of the conditions affecting all runs. Network forecast: Network-wide forecast that takes into account connection and circulation constraints. Train sequence forecast: Network-wide forecast that takes into account the train sequence, the connection and circulation constraints between runs and any infrastructure occupancy conflicts. The module also automatically suggests solutions to conflicts, e.g. for train breakdowns, missed connections and changes to the train sequence. 12

The RCS system family. The RCS products, consisting of RCS-Dispo and the add-on modules RCS-ADL and RCS-HOT along with RCS-ALEA, cover a range of needs in the various areas. RCS-Dispo shows the actual and target status across the network and is the tool used by dispatchers and rail traffic controllers in the train control centres. RCS-ADL (adaptive control) provides engine drivers with driving recommendations so that they can drive in a smooth, energy-efficient and resource-saving manner. Awarded the Watt d Or energy prize by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy in RCS-HOT (hub optimisation technology) optimises train management at problematic points, such as Zurich s western entrance. Winner of the UIC Innovation Award in RCS-ALEA provides a communications channel for incidents that occur on the network. 15 RCS-Dispo Our very own innovative development. A standardised and integrated dispatching system for rail traffic on Europe s busiest track network this is the Rail Control System (RCS), developed by SBB. The RCS system family has been in use on our networks, and those of the Swiss rail companies BLS and SOB, since 2009 and is constantly being refined by our railway operations and IT specialists. It has been adopted by companies outside of Switzerland too: the Belgian company Infrabel put RCS-Dispo into operation in late 2016, while the German DB network plans to use it from We are providing both railway companies with support in introducing and developing the system.
