Drones: Build and Fly Competition Training
Emirates Skills A program under the umbrella of the Abu Dhabi Center for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (ACTVET). Since 2006, Emirates Skills has been committed to preparing the national workforce for the achieving the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030 and UAE Vision Collaborates with major educational entities and industrial partners in the public and private sector, to identify the trades needed by the future labor market. 2
Emirates Skills Since 2013, Khalifa University has actively participated in the Emirates Technology & Innovation Competition, during which participants have the opportunity to: Measure their skills against those of their peers from other institutes. Acquire valuable experience. Compete for valuable prizes. Engage potential employers. Socialize with the other peers. Enhance their knowledge in their areas of interest 3
Emirates Technology & Innovation Competition The competition consists of five categories Cyber Security Mobile Application Development Game Development Drones: Build and Fly Electronics: Design and Build 4
Important Dates Registration deadline : April 15 th, Contest will take place from 10 th to 12 th of May Participants must register before the deadline using the following link: Contestants must be UAE nationals and registered either as a high school student (G12) or undergraduate student. 5
Awards Winning teams will receive the following awards: 6
General Rules for Coaches Contestants must be UAE nationals and registered either as a high school student (G12) or undergraduate student Coaches are not allowed to intervene during the judging process. For the Drones: Build and Fly Competition, the total number of teams is 10. 7
Drones: Build and Fly During this contest, group of students from different institutions will try to build a Multi-rotor to specs. Teams participating in the competition must deliver functioning prototypes. These prototypes will be competing based on the missions announced. 8
Drones: Build and Fly This competition is developed to test the participants capabilities and innovation in designing and implementing state-of-the-art ideas on drones. The main objective is to develop a demonstration on drones that could conceivably be useful for humanitarian and public services. This will enhance the participants current skills and give them opportunity to participate in other future Drones Competitions. 9
Drones: Build and Fly The contest will test the following in the participants Ability to use hands-on skills in following technical manual instructions to assemble a drone unit and test it to make sure it flies. Apply programming skills to design trajectories for autonomous drone s motion. Ability to perform several drone maneuvers that are specified by the organizing committee. Participants are expected to be tested in programming skills for autonomous drone s flight. For example: Java programming models. Participants are expected to pass several challenges that measure the skills of building and flying the drone. 10
Contest Environment Drones will be provided by the organizers. Only machines and mobile devices provided by the organizers are allowed. 11
Competition On the first day of the Competition, all competing teams will have to build and fly drones according to certain specifications. On the second day of the Competition, the teams will have complete specific tasks. Each task will be independently evaluated and the final results will determine the winner. Each task has specific set of functionalities. 12
Sample Tasks Drone Assembly Drone Autonomy Obstacles Runway Site Surveillance Balls Sorting Drone Vs. Car Landing on a moving target Entering and exiting buildings 13
Drone Assembly Follow certain instructions to build a drone in the least amount of time. A complete and functioning drone should be tested in the presence of judges. Challenge Speed Precision Team Work 14
Drone Assembly Useful links for Coaches: A DIY Quadcopter - Assembly - simple, cheap and easy. Parrot AR Drone Repair - Remove Central Cross to Replace Easy Drone assembly procedure How To: Make A Drone (Quadcopter) Tarot 680 Pro Hexacopter : Lower Assembly (Landing Gear and Bottom Plate) 15
Drone Autonomy Having the capability of creating an autonomous drone is important to prepare the future. Task : modify a Java program in order to move between two points land on a moving target follow a certain path enter a building fight fire avoid obstacles, etc. 16
Drone Autonomy The drone could be programmed using any computer programming language. Shown on the right is a sample code structure for autonomous flight of the drone for a maneuver comprising of takeoff, forward pitch, left rotate, left roll and landing. 17
Obstacles Avoidance Task: fly the drone from Point A to Point B while maneuvering around obstacles. The obstacles may be stationary or moving. The pilots may be allowed to see only through the drone camera. Scoring of such mission may be based on time or number of obstacles avoided / hit. 18
Other Sample Missions Site Surveillance: Teams will have to cruise over a miniature city and once an emergency occurs in one of the buildings, pilots should grab pictures as quickly as possible. Balls Sorting: Teams will have to implement a mechanism on their drones which will enable them to sort three of more balls of different types or sizes. Landing on a moving target Drone Vs. Ambulance Buildings inspection 19
Scoring The winning team is the one who gets the highest total number of points from the two days of the Drones: Build and Fly Competition. The Competition is divided into a number of tasks, each task has different weightage, depending on task complexity. The last hour of the Competition each day will be reserved for demonstration and assessment. Scoring will be done using score sheet provided for each task. If two teams obtain the same final score (in case of a tie), then the team which finished faster (overall), will be considered the winner. If the draw persists, a final challenge could decide the eventual winner. 20
