What to scan, when to scan What should you scan? Please scan every product bought by every member of the family at every store. Typical shopping trips might be your big weekly supermarket shop or trips to small shops like the butcher or the chemist. It s also just as important to record single items as it is multiple ones. You might also buy items from home, e.g. over the Internet record those, too. What to record on each shopping trip Please record: For each shop: 1. Who the main decision-maker was and who else went on the trip. 2. The store. For each item you bought: 1. Scan the barcode and enter the quantity and price. 2. If there s no barcode, choose the barcode that best matches it from the Scanning Guide. Answer the questions about the item and its weight. 3. Indicate if the item was on offer or promotion. Once you ve scanned everything: 1. Enter the total spend from your receipt and how you paid. 2. Once you ve finished, put the Scanner back in the Base Unit and keep the power on. More detail on each of these steps is in the next section of your guide.
How to scan a barcode Point the head of the Scanner at the barcode on the packet. Keep the Scanner s Yellow key pressed. Hold the Red beam about 7 to 10 cms away from the barcode and ensure it covers the width of the barcode. When the Scanner has worked, you ll hear a short beep. The Scanner display screen will now show the barcode in numbers. If, after several attempts, the barcode has not registered, please insert the code manually by entering the numbers from under the barcode. Please do not take spaces into account. If you make a mistake when entering the numbers, press the BS Key to delete these numbers. You ll hear a beep and you can then insert the correct code. Any crumpled or unreadable barcodes can be scanned if you vary the distance at which you are holding the Scanner. Please remember to always keep the till receipt for your purchases, for scanning purposes. To practise scanning barcodes, please choose item 4 ( Training Mode ) from your Scanner s main menu. It s very important that you tell us from which store, or type of outlet, you buy your shopping. You ll be asked to choose a store or outlet from a list in the Scanner memory. Always try to select the store where you shopped by name go to O and select the appropriate Other store.
Main functions of your Scanner The Scanner is simple to use. Just respond to the on-screen messages with the keypad, navigate with the arrow keys and press the Green key for YES and the Red key for NO. After the Welcome screen, you ll then see the main menu, with seven main options. Here s a guide to those options. 1 Purchases. Select to start scanning your shopping. 2 Vacation (Holiday Mode). It s important to enter the dates you will be away on holiday. 3 Survey. When prompted, use this menu to answer Homescan surveys through your scanner. 4 Practice. Use only if you wish to practice using your scanner any items scanned will not be recorded in the scanners memory. 5 Manual Poll. Your scanning information will automatically send to Nielsen each week, however if you receive a send failed message, or are contacted by the helpline, use this menu to manually send your scanning to Nielsen. 6 Messages (Message Mode). Read your weekly message. If you do not receive your weekly message, your scanner may not have connected correctly please contact the helpline. H A N D Y H I N T S GREEN KEY = YES RED KEY = NO If your scanner has two blue keys: LEFT KEY = YES RIGHT KEY = NO In the next section, we ll look at scanning your purchases and the other main menu functions. Some display screens are optional and only appear under certain conditions, so please follow the instructions and don t worry if some screens do not appear.
Scanning your purchases Please scan everything as soon as you return from the shops. Always keep your till receipt, as Homescan will ask what your total spend was in each store. To scan your items, choose Purchases from the main menu (key 1 or scroll down). Then press the Green key. Main shopper If you are in a multi-person household, your Scanner will briefly display the message Please select Main shopper. Then it will display a list of everyone in your household. Select the Main shopper by scrolling down or entering their number, then press the Green key. By Main shopper, we mean the person most responsible for choosing the products you buy. Next, your Scanner will ask Please select who else accompanied the Main shopper. Select who accompanied the Main shopper from the list: You ll notice the Main shopper s name is not listed, as it has already been selected. Key in the number next to the name of the person who also went on that shopping trip - choose everyone who went. A small tick will appear by each name. To confirm, press the Green key.
Select your store Which store did you visit? The Scanner will briefly display: Please select store from list, then a list of shops. The store lists are stored in alphabetical order. You can choose the store or outlet in several ways. If you just type the first letter of the store, you ll go direct to all stores beginning with that letter. Use the keys as you would for texting, e.g. for C, press the ABC key three times. Then use the arrow keys to select the right store. Recording purchases Please scan everything bought by every member of the family. That means nonbarcoded items, too. The Scanner will display the screen below and show the store name you ve previously selected. If this is the wrong store, you can press the ESC key and reselect the correct store. Items with a barcode on the packaging If the barcode keeps failing to register, manually enter the numbers from under the barcode, without any spaces. Sometimes, you might be asked to Scan barcode from Scan Guide, because the Scanner needs more information. Choose a barcode from the Scanning Guide, then follow the prompts. For more information see page 3 of your Scanning Guide. Quantity After scanning, you will see that the barcode is displayed at the top of the screen. You ll then be asked to enter the quantity. Key in the number and press the Green key. Price You will then be prompted for the price, type the amount, with no decimal point. As an example, if the item cost $20.11, enter the number as Items with no barcode Often, loose fruit and vegetables and other items do not have a barcode. This means you ll need to use the ScanningGuide in your Homescan pack. If you don t have the Scanning Guide, please call the Helpline. The Scanning Guide contains pages of products, each with their own unique Homescan barcode. Choose the description that best fits the item and scan the barcode.
You might also be asked to enter the number of Units purchased, the Weight of the item or even the number of Litres. The Scanner will decide the best question for each product. If you are asked for a quantity, use the number keys to select, and press the Green key to confirm. Enter the weight in grams - for example, a half-kilo item would be 500 grams. Use the number keys to enter the weight and press the Green key to confirm. Products on offer or promotion Some of the products that you buy will be on special offer or promotion. As an example, you may get 25% extra free or Buy one get one free. Your Scanner may ask if your purchase was on offer or promotion. Simply press the Green key for YES or the Red key for NO. Next product Your Scanner will then return to the Scan barcode screen. Repeat the steps for each item you bought. If you ve no more items to scan from this store, press the ESC key. This next screen is a final check that you have scanned all your purchases from this store. If you ve forgotten something, say YES by pressing the Green key. You ll then return to the Scan barcode display screen to enter more items. Say NO by pressing the Red key.
Total spend Now it s time to look at what you do when you ve finished entering purchases from a particular store. The store you originally selected is displayed at the top of the screen. The Scanner asks you to enter your total spend from the bottom of the till receipt. Enter the numbers in order. Don t use decimal points so a total of $37.51 would be keyed as If you make a mistake, use the BS key to delete and re-enter. When the total is correct, press the Green key to confirm. Using a loyalty card The Scanner memory has a list of which stores operate loyalty programmes. So if you shop at one of these stores, you might be asked if you used a loyalty card. If you used a loyalty card, press the YES key. If you didn't use a loyalty card, press NO.

Place the Scanner back on the Base Unit. Check that your scanner is on the Base Unit correctly and that the Base Unit is connected to the power supply. Please also check all the connections for your Base Unit. If everything is OK, press the Green key to try to resend your data. If this fails several times, contact the Helpline using the freephone number. The Help Desk team might then ask you to transmit the data manually. Select 6 Manual Poll from the main menu and click YES to resend your data. Reading your Weekly Message If you have a new message, this display will pop up before the main menu: If you don t want to read it straight away, just answer No by pressing the Red key. You can read it later by selecting Received from the Messages screen menu. If you want to read it straight away, answer YES by pressing the Green key. You may need to use the arrows to scroll down and read the whole message. Further Questions? Check out page 3 of your Scanning Guide for hints and tips! If you require further assistance please contact our Helpline: Freephone: Homescan.Helpline.au@nielsen.com Office hours: Mon to Thu: 8.30 am to 9 pm Fri: 8.30 am to 6 pm Sat: 9 am to 5 pm For a speedy response, please always include your membership ID located on the front of your Scanning Guide.
