3 ORGANIZING AND SAVINGS CHALLENGE The New Year is the perfect time to begin clearing out the clutter, and building up your family savings. But, you can get started any time of the year. Step one is to clear an area where you will store boxes and items which can be sold in a yard sale. For those who do not want to hold a yard sale later, simply plan to haul items to a local charity, or drop them at a consignment shop. Be sure to collect a receipt which can be used as a tax write-off. Any items which are broken or missing parts should be discarded. We begin in January with the pantry and kitchen, because the key to big savings in this challenge, is meal planning. Depending on your current habits, you can save between $25 - $75 each week by simply planning meals, and shopping the sales at your local grocery store. BOGO sales are the best way to make the most of every dime. You can even use coupons if you want to save more. Go here to learn more about how to do that and to print free coupons. Get that refrigerator, pantry and freezer ready to help you save big bucks! Use the following pages to go down the checklist for cleaning and organizing. You will also use those pages to write out your overall monthly meals. It will be your guide through each month. You will find Weekly Meal Planning pages with shopping lists where you will go into more details for meal planning. We have also included several pages to keep favorite recipes with ingredients and directions so you have a quick reference guide to use when making out your shopping list. *Get used to taking advantage of local BOGO sales. Try to buy about 4-6 weeks supplies of the items you use regularly, while they are on BOGO. Once you ve been doing this for a few months, you will really begin reaping the benefits of planning ahead. By the end of the year, you will have a clutter free home, and a larger savings account. You can top off your savings with a big yard sale see the successful yard sale tips pages for more on this and a printable checklist.

30 Successful Yard Sale - Tips Where? Check local churches and non-profits to see if they have any tag sales planned. Often, you can rent a table for about $25 - $50 to sell your goods. You each benefit as they keep the table fees and you get added traffic. How? Clear a closet or an area where you can store boxes intended for the sale. As you work through monthly projects, store items to sell. Remember, if needed, you can be flexible and change out which monthly project is completed during any particular month. When? Find out what month works best in your area for yard and garage sales and schedule accordingly. In south Florida, for instance, summer is too hot, and there are fewer people. The winter months, after Christmas and into spring, before Easter, are the best times to get traffic to your sales. In northern climates, summer months work well. Pay attention to the rainy seasons as you consider which dates are best in your area. A one day sale may work best, as people know that they don t have days to deliberate on decisions. If you have a LOT of stuff to get rid of, two days may be in order. 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. are fairly standard hours for sales. What? If you aren t using it, sell it. Don t hold back, get rid of that clutter! Do not sell broken items, underwear, or used cosmetics. Don t try to sell extremely valuable items (like special antiques) as tag sale shoppers are looking for a bargain. The exception would be in communities where people commonly sell valuables this way. Even so, expect to engage hagglers, as this is part of the fun for many thrift shoppers. Clothing is fine to sell, but doesn t bring in much unless it is designer. Baby clothes, maternity, and children s clothing in good condition usually do fine. Baby equipment, sporting goods, toys, framed art, books, furniture, lamps, kitchen items and appliances, and tools do best. Why? You ll feel so much better when you are able to clear that clutter, and build up your savings account! Plan to donate items that do not sell. Goodwill, Salvation Army and other donation sites, should be able to give you a tax receipt to use as a write-off, which is also good for saving you money.

31 Successful Yard Sale - Tips Supplies: Money to make change: Have on hand $50 in ones, 5 fives, 4 tens, 3 twenties, a roll of quarters, Fanny pack or carpenter s apron, Calculator, Notebook and pen, Card tables, Measuring tape for furniture, Garment rack, Extension cord, Packing supplies - newspapers, plastic bags. Set up: Curb appeal matters. Make sure you have an appealing show-stopper that people see right away when they pull up. Use permanent marker and signs large enough to been seen clearly. Always group like things together so that people can easily find what they need. Think about some of your favorite stores and magazine displays. Do your best to make an attractive display. Use bowls to contain small items, plastic containers, sheets and table cloths can be used to dress things up a bit. Borrow tables, use plywood on saw horses, bring out shelves, hang clothes on laundry line between trees. Selling: Try to have the family help out. You may need some extra string on hand to assist a buyer in securing an item or loading it into their vehicle. Use plenty of tags different color price tags can be used to delegate who donated what item, price range, or type of items. If items have a story to tell, be sure to label them such as girl s tea set from England, fit for a queen Price things realistically. People who thrift shop, do not pay high dollar for yard sale items. 10% - 15% of original value of items in good shape is a good rule of thumb. You may price them a bit higher to leave room for haggling, but too high will send people away. If things aren t selling by mid-day, LOWER your prices. In the last two hours, you can hand out shopping bags and tell people to fill them up for $5 - $10 (or different amounts for each table). Getting it gone is the idea, and some money is better than no money. When your sale is over, haul things off to the donation place and get a tax receipt! Consider setting up a special table for BOGO (buy one get one free) items. Important: Check with your local county office to see if they require a permit, and find out where you can and cannot place signs. It s usually worth it to advertise in the newspaper. Place free ads for your sale at craigslist.org, gsalr.com, garagesalehunter.com, and yardsalesearch.com. Use social media a week before, day before, and week of the sale. Place flyers at local grocery stores, neighborhood club houses, and the post office or other local hang-outs. Use plenty of signs with arrows. Yard Sale, Multi-family Yard Sale, or HUGE Yard Sale is all that is needed with arrows. Consistency matters, use the same color poster board with bold black lettering.

32 Successful Yard Sale Checklist Planning Early on Planning 1 week ahead Day of sale Clear area for storing sale items Begin gathering items: use large trash bags, boxes and bins. Go to a room or closet and set a timer for minutes and fill up your storage box. You ll sort and price later. Trash broken and damaged items. Plan date and time Helpers County or neighborhood permits. Advertising Price items using stickers. Add tags with special instructions or descriptions as needed. Choose BOGO deal items. Set aside hangers, string, grocery bags. Gather calculator, cash box, pens, newspapers, boxes, aprons or fanny packs, power cord for buyers to test electric items, table covers/sheets. Gather sign materials: printed arrows, glue or tape signs to foam boards, staple to stakes. Set up tables. Arrange items attractively. Get signs up early Place eye-catching items up front. Assign helpers to areas. Be prepared to bargain. If things are not moving by noon, drop prices, check signs, announce again on social media, do a flash sale fill a bag for $5! Newspapers (run on day before and Clean items, make repairs. End of day clean up, place day of) Flyers out a week in advance. Social media announcements a week Prepare sale area look for hazards, cover non-sale items. Gather money for change box ($50 in unsold items in boxes in vehicle to go to charity. *Get receipt for taxes and a day in advance and day of sale. Make signs week in advance, place ones, 5 fives, 4 tens, 3 twenties, roll of quarters). Social media announcements. Remove signs. Count money, pay helpers. Store yard sale supplies for signs day of. your next sale. Make any Day before sale Gather tables: buy, borrow, make with notes you want to plywood and saw horses. Notes: Set up tables, check area, and prices. Finish up signs and cleaning items. Social media reminders. remember for next time. Enjoy your clutter free home and extra funds.
