3 March 2012 Superfast Broadband NGA white area report Superfast Broadband Survey 2012 Summary of key messages Two surveys were carried out in Wiltshire, between 26 April 2011 and 3 June 2011, in order to understand the views of residents and businesses regarding Wiltshire s existing broadband provision, as well as their aspirations for future provision. A total of 3,622 residents responded along with 425 businesses. Of the resident respondents 2,319 were in Next Generation Broadband (NGA) white areas and of the business results 360 were in NGA white areas 1. The charts in this report are from un-weighted respondents in NGA white areas, as classified by BDUK unless specified otherwise, tables below will show tabular data for comparison. A postcode is classed as grey if: Its estimated VDSL speed is >15 Mbps AND it is scheduled to be upgraded by BT AND it is not an exchange only line, OR If it is in a Virgin Media area A postcode is classed as black if it satisfied BOTH the above conditions. All other postcode points are classed as white. Residents survey key results from NGA white areas 94.6% had an internet connection at home and 98.9% said that their connection was either very important or fairly important to them and their family. Only 4.8% indicated that their internet connection was adequate all of the time, with 30.8% saying that their connection was not adequate. 57.4% indicated they would be prepared to pay more for an improved connection and the improvement most respondents wished for was increased speed. 54.4% indicated they would like speeds in the superfast range (20mbps or greater) and 39.4% indicated they would like speeds in at least the standard range (2 to 19mbps). Business survey key results The majority of the businesses who responded to the survey are home based and are mostly micro and small businesses, often based in rural areas and who generally access the internet through standard ADSL connections. 99.2% indicated that their internet connection was either business critical or very useful and the most common uses for the internet were , purchasing, business website and research. 1 As at 8 March 2012 Page 2
4 Superfast Broadband NGA white area report March % indicated that their current internet connection was not adequate and a further 42.7% indicated that it was only adequate for some things but not others. 98.6% indicated that an improved internet connection was either very important or fairly important to the future of their businesses and again, the most desired improvement was increased speed. 66.9% indicated they would like speeds in the superfast range and 28.9% indicated they would like speeds in at least the standard range. 66.1% thought that a faster internet connection would lead to increased productivity for their business; 41% thought it would lead to improved customer service and 37.3% thought it would lead to business growth. Priorities for superfast broadband roll-out The survey of residents asked how householders would choose to prioritise the roll out of superfast broadband in Wiltshire: 67.2% of people indicated that they would like the roll out prioritised on areas with the highest numbers of homes with poor internet speeds. 64.5% indicated it should be focused on areas that are very rural, with limited access to services. 39.8% indicated it should be focused on areas with the highest numbers of people registering a demand for faster broadband services. 34.9% indicated the roll out should be focussed on areas with the highest numbers of businesses with poor internet speeds.
