PRESENTATION OUTLINE Evaluating the Impact of a Publication How to measure success of a publication Metrics Journal Article Company Traditional New Evaluations How often to evaluate
QUESTION TO AUDIENCE: DO YOU EVALUATE PUBLICATION METRICS? Yes No What are publication metrics?
QUESTION TO AUDIENCE: WHAT DO YOU USE TO EVALUATE PUBLICATION METRICS? Traditional tools (ie, Impact Factor) New tools (ie, Altmetrics, Google Scholar metrics) Both traditional and new tools
HOW CAN WE USE METRICS TO MEASURE THE SUCCESS OF OUR PUBLICATIONS? Are more publications better? What about timing? Are the data reaching the right audiences? What about the quality of the publications? Where can we get this information?
WHY DO WE NEED JOURNAL METRICS? Citation recognized as indicators of scholarly impact Measure reach and uptake of new knowledge Acknowledge contribution of peers Professional reward Standard used to compare and rank journals Adapted from presentation: A Prakash, M Wilde. Journal Metrics in a Digital World: What do they mean? The Publication Plan Meeting, October 2, 4 and 9 th Available at:
WHY DO WE NEED ARTICLE METRICS? Indicators of most popular article or article topics Judge merit based on article rather than in journal published Metrics could include: Number of PDF downloads Number of citations in Google Scholar Number of views (HTML or PDF view) Adapted from presentation: A Prakash, M Wilde. Journal Metrics in a Digital World: What do they mean? The Publication Plan Meeting, October 2, 4 and 9 th Available at:
Acceptance Rate (%) COMPANY METRICS Acceptance Rates first choice journal or scientific congresses Success may depend on stage of product and may change with time Year
Number of Times Article Sent by MedInfo REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION Medical Information Metrics Unsolicited requests
TRADITIONAL METRIC TYPES Impact Factor Eigenfactor score Article Influence score Hirsch (h)- index SCImago Journal Rank More details available: A Prakash, M Wilde. Journal Metrics in a Digital World: What do they mean? The Publication Plan Meeting, October 2, 4 and 9 th Available at:
NOT YOUR MOMMA S METRICS Changing Landscape Not as dependent on subscriptions Readers can identify articles or interest through electronic alerts

SOCIAL MEDIA Social Sites Media Pick-up / Press Releases Chat Boards or Blogs Patient Advocate Sites Tweets Altmetrics
ALTMETRICS Aims to explore the many different ways to measure scientific contributions
ADDITIONAL MEASURES Databases that Track Metrics ISI Thomson Reuters Web of Science Elsevier SciVerse Scopus Google Scholar Custom Analyses Impact of your publications e.g., predicted vs actual citation rates Quality of publications
GOOGLE SCHOLAR
COMPARISON OF DATABASES A Prakash, M Wilde. Journal Metrics in a Digital World: What do they mean? The Publication Plan Meeting, October 2, 4 and 9 th Available at:
QUESTION TO AUDIENCE: DATABASE TO MEASURE METRICS Which database do you primarily use to evaluate publication metrics? ISI Thomson Reuters Web of Science Elsevier SciVerse Scopus Google Scholar Other database not mentioned We do not use these databases to evaluate metrics
QUESTION TO AUDIENCE: MONITORING METRICS How often do you evaluate publication metrics? About every 3 months About every 6 months Once a year We don't like metrics so we never evaluate We haven t started using these evaluation tools yet but plan to
CYCLIC EVALUATION 1. Current Publication Plan 1. Next Year Publication Plan 4. Revise Publication Plan 2. Publication 4. Revise Publication Plan 2. Publication 3. Evaluation (Metrics) 3. Evaluation (Metrics)
