8 BACKGROUND Scientific posters remain an essential tool for communicating cutting-edge clinical data to healthcare professionals. However, the overall look and feel of scientific posters has not evolved significantly from the purely textual medical posters, which originated in the late 1800s. We wanted to explore the use of QR code technology as a way to modernize our scientific posters and encourage the instant sharing of information.

9 WHAT IS A QR CODE? A QR Code is a specific matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by dedicated QR barcode readers and camera phones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The QR Code is clearly defined and published as an ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standard.

Download a PDF, an image, or a video Make a phone call Send an SMS, MMS or Allow your customers to register for an event online Create a vcard (electronic business card) or vcalendar event Open location coordinates in Google Maps Create market:// URLs for packages (e.g., product packages) Create special youtube:// URLs for YouTube app on iphone Read plain or free formatted text on your device

QR Codes provide an effective means to instantly share information with our customers QR Codes offer another medium to share data with our customers Although QR Code technology is becoming more commonplace in the consumer market, it has tremendous untapped potential in the sharing of medical publications and communications

18 INITIAL QR CODE PILOT: PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVES To explore the incorporation of QR Codes in scientific posters to increase visibility, accessibility, and usability of clinical data for healthcare professionals To discover the potential application of QR Codes across a myriad of communications

19 METHODS We designed a small pilot program to assess the intrinsic and potential value of using QR Code technology in scientific posters. Six posters with QR Codes were included in the pilot over a period of 3 months, all scans were recorded. Healthcare professionals scan the QR Code to receive an electronic copy of the poster via smart phone technology. The number of posters downloaded were captured and measured. The quality of interactions were assessed using personal observations.

20 INITIAL PILOT RESULTS Overall, 122 posters were downloaded over a 6-month period. As a result, the number of printed handouts was reduced by 75%. Personal interactions at the poster sessions increased by 25%. 1 out of every 4 attendees that stopped at the booth asked about the QR Code on the poster. On average, it took the presenter 3-5 minutes to explain and demonstrate the technology. We are incorporating the use of QR Codes across the company for myriad uses both internally and externally.

22 INITIAL CONCLUSIONS Our pilot clearly demonstrated the value of incorporating QR Code technology into scientific posters. QR Codes provide a valuable function by Facilitating the electronic sharing of information Reducing the total number of printed handouts, and Setting a new standard for sharing of medical information Healthcare professionals were intrigued by the new technology, increasing the level of interaction and exchange of information at the poster session. 22

23 QR CODE PILOT EXPANSION After an initial successful pilot, a multidisciplinary team was formed internally to evaluate the expanded and long-term use of QR Code technology. A decision was made to develop an in-house solution to create, assign and maintain QR Codes. Responsibility for QR Codes used on scientific publications (e.g., posters) will reside with the Publications department. Deployment will begin company-wide shortly.

30 HOW TO SCAN A QR CODE Locate the QR Code you want to scan Open the QR Code reader app on your phone Focus your phone s camera on the QR Code Most apps scan QR Code automatically, but you may have to tap a button to begin the scan Some apps open the link automatically Other apps may ask you to open the link

32 CREATING A QR CODE IS SIMPLE AND FAST! The internet is full of free QR Code generators. One of the easiest to use is the Kaywa QR Code Generator Go to Test a few different QR generators and find one that you like. Although some QR Code generators offer free data collection and report generation, you may wish to hire a local agency to set up and maintain your QR Codes and to analyze data and prepare reports for you. QR Codes often link to websites that must be maintained.

35 PRACTICAL TIPS AND TRICKS Consider setting expiration dates. How long do you want the information to be available? Too little time will cut down on the number of downloads. Think outside of the box! QR Code technology offers an innovative way to share information, so BE INNOVATIVE IN YOUR USE OF QR CODES Hire an agency to help you create and maintain your QR codes. This should be relatively inexpensive. As publications professionals our job is to create the information to be shared, not mastering the technology.
