1 STAINLESS STEEL FOR SPECIALTY APPLICATIONS Specialty Metals to Support Innovative Manufacturing
2 Specialty Metals to Support Innovative Manufacturing Encore Metals is a specialist supplier of high grade steel and metal products including carbon and alloy machinery steels, and an extensive range of stainless steels including duplex grades and nickel based corrosion resistant alloys, iron bar products, forgings, castings, aluminum, tool steels, nickel alloys and bronze products. Processing services provided include saw cutting, trepanning, plasma arc cutting, stainless plate profiling, and plate sawing. Featured Alloy Stainless Steel 17-4PH, T-630 (UNS S17400) Chromium-Nickel Precipitation/Age Hardening martensitic stainless steel - Available mainly in bar and plate - ASTM A564 We are committed to being the primary service center for Canada s steel product requirements, and to continuing to expand our stainless product mix to meet our varied customer s needs. Typical Analysis C Mn P S Si Cr Ni & Cu Cb+Ta.07 Max 1.0 Max.04 Max.30 Min 1.0 Max 15/ /5.0.15/.45 Alloying Elements Chromium: Most important element of stainless steel. An addition of 10% chromium will form an oxide film (passive surface film) which renders the steel corrosion resistant. Chromium also increases resistance to scaling. Nickel: Second most important element. It increases ductility, corrosion resistance, and high temperature strength. Silicon: Primarily increases resistance to scaling. Manganese: Improves hot working properties. Molybdenum: Increases corrosion and high temperature strength. Sulphur/Phosphorus/Selenium: Increase machinability. Titanium or Columbium-Tantalum: Stabilizes carbon and prevents chromium carbide precipitation and subsequent intergranular corrosion. Weight Formulas ROUND ROD: Square of diameter x 9.42 x density of alloy (lbs. per cubic inch) = weight per lineal foot in pounds. SQUARE BAR: Square of one side x 12 x density of alloy (lbs. per cubic inch) = weight per lineal foot in pounds. HEXAGON ROD: Square of distance across flats x 10.4 x density of alloy (lbs. per cubic inch) = weight per lineal foot. RECTANGULAR BAR: Thickness x width x 12 x density of alloy (lbs. per cubic inch) = weight per lineal foot in pounds. ROUND TUBE: Outside diameter minus wall thickness x wall thickness x density of alloy (lbs. per cubic inch) x 37.7 = weight per lineal foot in pounds. SQUARE TUBE: 1.27 x the weight of a round tube of the same wall thickness, and of diameter equal to the distance across the flats of the square tube= weight per lineal foot. CIRCLES: Square of diameter x thickness x x density of alloy (lbs. Per cubic inch) = weight of a circle. RINGS: Outside diameter plus inside diameter x outside diameter minus inside diameter x thickness x x density of alloy (lbs. per cubic inch) = weight of ring in pounds. Characteristics Heat Treatment 17-4PH offers a unique combination of properties: high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, good fatigue strength, superior resistance to galling and seizing, easily heat treated by a short, simple low temperature treatment with minimal distortion and no scaling. Parts may be finish-machined before hardening. It has good fabrication characteristics and is easily weldable. T-630 is usually supplied in Condition A, commonly called solution treated, but it should be noted that it can be as hard as HB363, and is frequently HB 321/341. Also the steel should never be put into service in Condition A - the structure is untempered martensite, with low ductility and poor resistance to stress cracking. See the Data Section for machinability ratings of Condition A and Condition H1150 in our online product manual Condition A - Solution treated: Heated at 1038 C (plus/minus 15 ) for 30 minutes. Air cool or oil quench. Brinell Hardness 363 max. This treatment is normally done at the mill. Precipitation Hardening or Aging Treatments Starting with Condition A material Condition H 900 H 925 H 1025 H 1075 H 1100 H 1150 DH hour at 900 F (482 C) Air Cool 4 hours at 925 F (496 C) Air Cool 4 hours at 1025 F (552 C) Air Cool 4 hours at 1075 F (579 C) Air Cool 4 hours at 1100 F (593 C) Air Cool 4 hours at 1150 F (621 C) Air Cool 4 hours at 1150 F (621 C) Air Cool then 4 hours at 1150 F (621 C) Air Cool Density of 304/316:.290 Density of 410:.280 Information is for reference only, not to be used for design purposes.
