The efficiency of EDTA ws compred with thioure. Primry results otined reveled tht EDTA performed s good corrosion inhiitor for mild steel in 1.0 M hydrochloric cid medi compring with thioure. Polriztion curves show tht the ehvior of EDTA nd thioure re mixed-type inhiitors. EIS shows tht the control step for corrosion process is chrge trnsfer mechnism. Introduction Mild steel is widely used s constitutionl mteril in mny industries due to its good mechnicl properties nd low cost. The corrosion of mild steel is of fundmentl cdemic nd industril concern tht hs received considerle mount of ttention. Acid pickling ths re employed to remove undesirle scle from the surfce of the metls. Once the scle is removed, the cid is then free for further ttck on the metl surfce. The use of inhiitor is one of the most prcticl methods for protection ginst corrosion, especilly in cidic medi. A survey of literture revels tht the pplicility of orgnic compounds s corrosion inhiitors for mild steel in cidic medi hs een recognized for long time. Compounds studied s inhiitors include trizole derivtives (Bentiss et l 1999, Bentiss et l 1999), ipyrzolic derivtives (Touhmi et l 2000), surfctnts (Alger et l 2004, Brnzoi et l 2000) romtic hydrzides (Qurishi et l 2001), orgnic dyes (Oguzie et l 2004, Oguzie et l 2005), Poly 90
2 April, 2009 (4-vinylpyridine) ( Lri et l 2004) nd thiosemicrzide-type orgnic compounds ( Benli 2006). These compounds cn dsor on the mild steel surfce nd lock the ctive sites decresing the corrosion rte. This pper descries the ffect of ethylenediminetetr-acetic cid (EDTA), C 10 H 16 N 2 O 8 N 2, on corrosion inhiition of mild steel in 1.0M hydrochloric cid solutions compring with thioure. Figure 1 shows the moleculr structure of used inhiitors. 2. Experimentl Commercilly mild steel metl ws used. Smple ws mechniclly polished using SiC pper in successive grdes from 200 to 1500 nd ws rinsed with methnol. The cid solutions were mde from RA grde HCl. Approprite concentrtion of cid ws prepred y using distilled wter. The mesurements were crried out in three electrodes electrochemicl cell with grphite counter electrode nd sturted clomel electrode (SCE) s reference. Potentiodynmic polriztion curves were otined strting from Ecorr with the potentil scn rte of 125 µv/s. EIS mesurement ws crried out on stedy stte open circuit potentil (OCP) distured with mplitude of 10 mv A.C. sine wve t frequencies etween 0.01 Hz nd 100 KHz. Mesurements were performed t room temperture using Potentiostt/Glvnostt/ZRA (Gmery instrument, Ref600 model, USA) 3. Results nd Discussion 3.1 Polriztion mesurements The effect of the concentrtion of EDTA nd thioure re shown in Figure 2 which presents the nodic nd cthodic Tfel curves of mild steel in 1 M HCl. Vlues of nodic β nd cthodic βc Tfel constnt nd corrosion current density re listed in Tle 1 nd 2. These vlues were clculted from the intersection of the nodic nd cthodic Tfel lines of the polriztion curve t Ecorr. The inhiition efficiencies re clculted y the following expression: (1) where i unhiit nd i inhiit re respectively, the corrosion current density without nd with EDTA or thioure in 1.0 M HCl solution. The nodic nd cthodic Tfel lines for mild steel in presence of EDTA or thioure were lmost prllel upon incresing inhiitor concentrtions. This suggests tht the inhiitor ct y simple locking the mild steel surfce (Mnhn, 1996). In the other words, the inhiitor decresing the exposed surfce re for corrosion s well s it doesn t ffect the mechnism of mild steel dissolution or hydrogen evolution rection. Only when the chnge in Ecorr vlue is no less thn 85 mv, compound cn e recognized s n nodic or cthodic type inhiitor (Ashssi-Sorkhi et l 2004). The lrgest displcement of the corrosion potentils (E) were out 8 mv nd 11 mv in presence of EDTA nd thioure, respectively. Therefore, EDTA nd thioure re cts s corrosion mixed-type inhiitors. Also the inhiition efficiencies increse with incresing inhiitors concentrtion s shown in Tle 1 nd EIS mesurements The results of EIS were figured y Nyquist plots, Figure 3. Doule lyer cpcitnce vlues (Cdl) nd polriztion resistnce vlues (Rp) were otined from impednce s descried y Moretti (2004). The fitted vlues of Rp nd Cdl re listed in Tle 1 nd 2. The inhiition efficiencies IE% is clculted y polriztion resistnce (Rp) s follows: The Rp vlues increse with the increse in concentrtion of either EDTA or thioure, indicting n insulted dsorption lyer formtion; the decrese in Cdl vlues suggested decrese in locl dielectric constnt etween the metl nd electrolyte induced y the dsorption of EDTA or thioure (Khled nd Hckermn 2003). 4. Conclusion EDTA showed good inhiition performnce compring with thioure. Polriztion curves indicted tht the EDTA nd thioure ehve minly s mixed-type inhiitors. EIS showed tht the chrge trnsfer controls the corrosion process in the uninhiited nd inhiited solutions either for EDTA or thioure.
