Each of these series is defined in greater detail within the section. Each series gives an opening introduction to the tool, benefits, and last but not least, a speeds and feed chart for each specific tool that has evolved from years of research, testing and data collection. The third listing, Miniature, Chamfer Mill and Corner Rounding Cutter are various tools that are not necessarily material specific, but grouped together in an easy to find format. 4 MATERIAL APPLICATION GUIDE We have tried to organize the tools in this catalog consistent with the manner in which our customers use them and think about them. The majority of the tools have been categorized in one of two areas: 1.) Aluminum and Non-Ferrous Alloys, and 2.) Ferrous and Exotic Alloys. Within each of the two aforementioned listings the tools are organized by operation, beginning with Roughing and following a continuum through Finishing. While some are clearly intended for roughing and others used for finishing, there are offerings between the two that can serve as rougher-finishers or finisher-roughers. Use this guide to begin searching for a tool. First select the appropriate material group, then select the tool series that best fits your application. The first page of each material group gives a brief description and page number for each series. Turn to the corresponding page or pages, then select desired tool. 5 HOW WE NUMBER OUR TOOLS We have arranged our numbering system based on how our tools will be used. The first series of letters refers to the targeted material and application. The middle series (where specified) tells length of cut and/or any special features. The ending numeric series tells you the number of flutes and diameter of cut in inches. AFI ST Tool Series The first set of alpha characters corresponds to the series name that speaks for the intended material and application. For example; AFI = Aluminum Finisher MH = Medium Helix SS = Stainless Steel If a BN follows, it is a Ball Nose end mill. BN = Ball Nose Length of Cut or Special Features The second set of alpha characters refers to length of cut or special features. Length of Cut or Special Features ST = Stub Length M = Medium Length L = Long Length X = Extra Long Length If no alpha characters, length is standard (Standard Length). Special Features C = Chip Breaker D = Double End DH = Double Helix I = Indexed Flutes LS-M = Long Shank Medium Reach LS-L = Long Shank Long Reach LS-X = Long Shank Extra Long Reach RN = Reduced Neck RO = Rougher Number of Flutes and Cutting Diameter This 5 digit series of numbers indicates number of flutes and cutting diameter. The first digit is the number of flutes. 3 = 3 Flutes, 4 = 4 Flutes, etc. The next four digits are the cutting diameter in inches with an implied decimal after the second digit. For example; 0250 = = 1/ = = 5/ = = 3/4 We take exceptional pride in the manufacturing of our tools. 6 COATINGS All of our tools are available in a variety of application specific coatings. Please see individual tool listings for stocked treatments and coatings. Other treatments and coatings are available upon request. These coatings are designed to enhance performance as well as the tool life. The chart below is a handy reference outlining the coating composition as well as the suggested application. Photo Illustration Code No. Composition Characteristics Applications C-1* Titanium Nitride (TiN) A general purpose coating which has excellent wear resistance, reduces friction and prevents galling. Most Ferrous materials. Although it's unlikely, galling may occur in Titanium and Titanium Alloys. (Not recommended for aluminum.) C-4 Titanium Carbo Nitride (TiCN) An extremely hard coating on the surface of the tool which has outstanding wear resistance, reduces friction and prevents galling. Most Ferrous, Non-Ferrous and Non-Metallic materials. Very effective at higher speeds. Although it's unlikely, galling may occur in Titanium and Titanium Alloys. C-5 Zirconium Nitride (ZrN) A thin, hard coating that improves lubricity and increases oxidation resistance. Specifically designed for machining abrasive and gummy materials. Suitable for machining Aluminum Alloys, High Silica Aluminum, Cast Iron, High Temperature Alloys, Stainless Steel and Glass Filled Plastics. Not recommended for machining Carbon Steels. C-7 Titanium Aluminum Nitride (TiAlN) A very hard coating recommended for harder alloys which has very good wear resistance, reduces friction and prevents galling. Titanium, Titanium Alloys, Nickel-Base Alloys, Stainless Steel and Cast Iron. Effective at higher speeds. Not recommended for Wrought Aluminum, Copper or Brass. C-11 Aluminum Titanium Nitride (AlTiN) An extremely hard coating very similar to TiAlN with outstanding wear resistance. AlTiN has a higher aluminum content which makes it harder and smoother than TiAlN. Very effective in the same materials as TiAlN. Excellent for small depths of cut and excels in high speed and dry machining applications. C-15* Hardlube Standard (TiAlN+WC/C Std) Multi-layer coating, consisting of a hard layer and a lubrication layer. For improved chip flow and possible dry machining. Improved edge wear resistance and increased lubricity. C-21* Amorphous Diamond Coating Synthetic diamond. Low co-efficient of friction. Approximately three times harder than TiCN. The combination of progressive geometries result in a cutting tool intended for full engagement cuts at increased feed rates. The rigidity of these end mills enable multiple passes at faster feed rates. The appropriate depths of cut per pass are as follows: One half (1/2) times the diameter in ferrous materials and one (1) times the diameter in non-ferrous materials.
