13 Blind Hole MolyGlide 4 MolyGlide MOLYGLIDE Coating for Tapping Guhring has developed a new Molybdenum Disulfide-based coating that acts as a gliding agent greatly reducing surface-to-surface friction in machining applications. MolyGlide is a non-stick coating that is perfect for tapping soft gummy materials (aluminum, mild steel, copper, etc.) due to its inherent ability to resist chip welding. MolyGlide acts as a self lubricating agent that stays with the cutting tool. In applications that tend to run at near dry cutting conditions, MolyGlide can extend tool life dramatically. Reduced chip welding can also lead to improved thread surface finish and quality. Guhring offers MolyGlide coated standard taps in both the yellow and black ring styles. In addition, Guhring s Coating Division can apply MolyGlide to any cutting tool upon request. This coating is a soft coating that can be applied to a bright finish tool or on top of an exisitng hard coating such as or TiCN. Typical manufacturing prints will call for a 68 to 75 percent-of-thread for the finished part, but in many cases the machinist has a wider latitude of percent-of-thread to fall within. Be aware that increasing the percent-ofthread will increase the strength of the thread but will in many cases decrease the life of the tool. For example, increasing the percent-of-thread from 75% to 100% will increase the strength of that thread by approximately 5%but it will require 3 times the amount of torque to produce the same thread. In general, try to keep the percent-of-thread to the low end of the part tolerance. These grinding marks can have a negative effect on the reaction of the tool and the material to be reformed. Friction between the two surfaces can increase, as well as the heat generated in association with the forming process. Additionally, the tap can require more torque to operate, and lastly, these grinding marks will increase the wear on the tool by encouraging material build-up. Thanks to a special manufacturing process to improve the surface finish of our taps, Guhring s new form taps no longer possess these grind marks. Guhring form taps have an exceptional surface finish quality few manufacturers offer. For the end user, this new manufacturing process provides longer tool life and increased cutting speeds.
