3 3-Year Program with the Ministry of Health of Malaysia In February 2013, JIFSAN, Delta Professional Consultancy and the Malaysia Ministry of Health initiated a three year project focusing on building: laboratory testing capacity, risk analysis capabilities, increasing the skills of the Ministry s food inspection staff, and increasing the understanding of global food laws and regulations. Over 20 training programs on these subjects have been planned through The lab program is developed in a train-the-trainer format, where a small number (2 to 4) skilled analysts, each pre-selected to become local trainers in Malaysia, come to the IFSTL and participate in one of our courses with instructors from FDA, USDA, EPA, D.C. Public Health and UMD. Six months to a year later, the IFSTL instructors travel to their lab in Klang, Malaysia, to support the delivery of the same course to a large group of analysts from the country s national or provincial labs. The first course in Malaysia was held in October 2013 and was very successful. What happens when you mix Chocolate and Dog Food? The two-day meeting also provided the opportunity to include some hands-on laboratory demonstrations of rapid methods in microbiology at the IFSTL. The demos were presented in collaboration with 3M, Life Technologies, biomerieux, BioControl and DuPont to answer the information imbalance identified as a hurdle to laboratory capacity. 4

Public Health Laboratory Pesticides Technical Assistance April 11, 16-18, 2014 We participated in a technical assistance activity arranged by the USDA for the National Plant Health Management Institute of India. Two senior officers of the organization spent four days at IFSTL sharing information about practices and regulations. 5

6 New Internship Opportunities We receive many requests for internships or extended stays in our laboratory, but until now, had been unable to accommodate any request. Starting in September 2014, we are offering extended stays and internship programs for select participants. How does it work? 1- Find a series of 2, 3 or 4 courses that you would like to combine. 2- Send us an at IFSTL@umd.edu and explain what you would like to do in addition to the courses. For example: a) September 10-Oct 10, Listeria, industry analysts and Salmonella/Campy courses, with a project Sept 29- Oct 10 (2 weeks) practicing detection and identification of atypical Salmonella. b) October 20- Nov. 21, vet drugs and mycotoxins, with a project Oct. 30 to Nov. 11 (2 weeks) practicing to add drugs to an LC/MS/MS method. These examples only mean to illustrate some possibilities, but we expect interested participants to propose their own internship. COST: Simply sum the cost for each course + ~$2,000 (depends on the project). We will work with you to develop the internship you need at a cost you can afford!
