2 JIFSAN expands its reach locally and globally through partnerships with federal agencies, national and international organizations, academic institutions and the food industry. Teaching Teams are composed of members from government, academia and industry. A Typical Program includes: - Lectures - Presentations - Student workgroup activity - Field visits 16Oct09 4

5 Good Agriculture Practices (GAPs) : 1st international training program developed by JIFSAN Serves as a model for the development and implementation of subsequent programs. Established to apply GAPs and good manufacturing practices (GMPs) to the production of produce (raw fruits and vegetables). 5

7 Good Aquacultural Practices (GAqPs) [Est. 2006] JohnsonDiversey funds were used to develop the GAqPs program (modeled after the GAPs program). A team of seafood specialists developed the program and offered the pilot in Vietnam (November, 2006). 16Oct09 7

8 Good Aquacultural Practices (GAqPs) The program has been revised based on findings from the Vietnam pilot and a formal training manual has been developed. The program has been offered in: - Vietnam (November, 2006) - Thailand (May, 2008) - Indonesia (November, 2008) - Bangladesh (November, 2009) 16Oct09 8

9 Commercially Sterile Packaged Foods (CSPF) [Est. 2008] Designed to promote food safety in the food processing sector. Developed by a team of LACF specialists from academia, industry and government. 16Oct09 9

10 Commercially Sterile Packaged Foods (CSPF) Objectives- Improve fundamental understanding of: - Microbiology and the basics of food preservation and spoilage analysis - Thermal processing - Processing equipment and instrumentation - Regulatory requirements, including record keeping and inspections - Packaging integrity 16Oct09 10

12 Developing a New Paradigm for Sustainable International Food Safety Training [Est. 2009] Proposed Concept: Provide a vehicle and framework to sustain in-country/regional training and capacity building. Supported through partnerships with the sponsoring country, industry and local institutions. Utilize existing resources within a country/region. Pool together a network of institutions with the capacity to conduct ongoing extension-like training. 16Oct09 12

13 Developing a New Paradigm for Sustainable International Food Safety Training Proposed Concept (continued): JIFSAN would provide continued intellectual support and expertise when appropriate. JIFSAN would provide intensive training to in-country trainers with the ultimate goal of them becoming the primary trainers The in-country partner(s) would host workshops; training sessions; and seminars for regulatory officials, farmers, food producers and others involved in the provision of food from the farm to the consumer. 16Oct09 13

16 Developing a New Paradigm for Sustainable International Food Safety Training Next Steps: Develop an MOU between JIFSAN and The Instituto Superior de Agricultura (Universidad ISA) Santiago, Dominican Republic Obtain feedback from ISA faculty who participated in the GAPs Pilot training April 20-24, 2009 Identify and develop 1-2 projects to be initiated during the first year of partnership Develop a framework for sustainable food safety training Keep U.S. agencies (USAID; FAS; etc.) informed on progress. 16Oct09 16

17 JIFSAN-BSFF Aquacultural Food Safety Center (AFSC). JIFSAN and BSFF will work to develop a self-sustaining training center with a cadre of in house trainers trained by JIFSAN and with JIFSAN offering continuing intellectual support. To this end the following projects have been started. JIFSAN will present a five day Good Aquacultural Practices training program in November 2009 JIFSAN will include a second training program in its future plans with the goal the continued training of the in-house (AFSC) trainers JIFSAN will arrange for intensive training of AFSC trainers in the U.S. JIFSAN has identified consultants to develop Codes of Conduct. 16Oct09 17
