1 Assist with preparing and maintaining livestock accommodation Overview This unit sets the standard for assisting with the preparation and maintenance of accommodation for livestock. You will be working under close supervision, and will follow the instructions of a supervisor at all times. The first element covers the preparation of livestock accommodation. Preparation may involve cleaning, sweeping and securing doors or gates, for example. It will also include the disposal of waste such as dung, urine, unused feed and packaging, for example. Accommodation may include barns, sheds or indoor waiting areas. During preparation you will be responsible for recognising any hazards that exist and reporting them to the appropriate person. The second element covers the maintenance of accommodation so that it is safe, healthy and clean for livestock. This will include replenishing any materials, such as bedding for example, that are required by the livestock. During such work you will be in position to keep an eye on the condition and behaviour of the livestock. You must be able to recognise any signs of poor health or abnormal behaviour, and refer these to the supervisor. Throughout this unit, you are expected to observe appropriate health and safety requirements relating to yourself, other people, and to the livestock themselves LANAGNLP1 1
2 Performance criteria You must be able to: You must be able to: P1 prepare the necessary equipment and materials and maintain them in a fit state for use P2 carry out cleaning routines in accordance with instructions P3 replace any ancillary materials and fittings when cleaning is complete in accordance with instructions P4 prepare accommodation so that it is safe, healthy and secure for livestock in accordance with instructions P5 dispose of waste in a safe manner and place in accordance with instruction P6 identify any hazards correctly and report them to the appropriate person P7 maintain the health and safety of yourself and others throughout the process P8 ensure an adequate supply of clean, uncontaminated water is available P9 prepare accommodation in a healthy, safe and clean condition for livestock in accordance with instructions P10 adjust and replenish materials and supplies required by livestock as instructed P11 monitor the health and well-being of livestock throughout operations P12 report any changes in the behaviour or condition of livestock to the appropriate person P13 clean and maintain equipment in a fit state for use and store safely and securely in an appropriate storage area P14 dispose of waste in a safe manner and place P15 maintain the health and safety or yourself and others and the welfare of the livestock throughout the process LANAGNLP1 2
