1 Hammer-Capsue 57.0 Hammer-Capsue 57.1 Introduction The Hammer-Capsue System consists of a sef contained, singe use, two-part gass capsue into which threaded anchor rod or reinforcing bars can be directy driven without the need for a chise point or spinning action. It is designed for use in the instaation of 3/8" through 1" diameter threaded rod in soid concrete and masonry materias. It can aso be used to insta reinforcing bars Product Description The Hammer-Capsue adhesive is packaged in singe use gass capsues which have pre-measured components. A mixture of hardener and quartz aggregate is contained in the upper portion of the capsue whie the ower portion contains an epoxy acryate resin. Unike traditiona capsue anchors which required the use of chise-pointed anchor rod and specia instaation toos, the Hammer-Capsue is designed for use with straight cut anchor rod. Straight Cut Rod Hammer-Capsue After driing the anchor hoe, the capsue is inserted, resin end first, as shown by the arrow on the capsue. Then, as the rod is driven into the capsue, the hardener is automaticay dispersed into the resin. A separate capsue is used for each size of 3/8" through 1" threaded anchor rod. The Hammer-Capsue System bonds the threaded rod to the base materia so no expansion forces are exerted against the was of the hoe in the base materia. This makes it idea for use in anchoring to soid base materias ranging from soft common brick to hard marbe or granite. Unike expansion anchors, the anchor can be set cose to the edge of the base materia. The unique design aows the use of straight cut anchor rod which reduces instaation costs when compared with systems requiring chise pointed rod and specia instaation toos Hammer Capsue Specifications The foowing tabe ists the shef ife and storage recommendations for the capsue. Hammer-Capsue Recommended Setting Time The setting times the for the Hammer-Capsue adhesive mortar are isted beow. The setting time is the minimum time required for the mortar to reach its pubished physica properties. The setting times isted are for the base materia temperature, not ambient air temperature. For exampe, when making instaations inside a buiding in exterior was during the winter, the temperature of the hoe may be different than the interior temperature and shoud be measured to determine the setting time required. In order to insure proper mixing, the capsue shoud be conditioned to a minimum temperature of 60 F. prior to use. 2 Hammer-Capsue 57.5 Hammer-Capsue Adhesive Properties Resistance to Chemicas The resistance of the cured Hammer-Capsue adhesive to various chemicas was determined according to ASTM Specification C-581 by aying moded sampes of the resin in the respective chemica agents. The sampes were subjected to a bending strength test before and after a 12 month exposure to the chemicas. The adhesive was rated as resistant if there was no visibe deterioration and ess than 25% reduction in bending strength. This exposure is extreme. Under norma instaation conditions, the epoxy is exposed to the chemica agents ony at the surface of the concrete around the top of the anchor hoe. As the temperature of the base materia increases, the bond strength of the anchor wi decrease. Typica performance of the Hammer- Capsue adhesive at eevated base materia temperatures is shown beow. The vaues are based on maintaining the concrete test sampes used at a given temperature for a minimum of 24 hours before appying a test oad. Percent of Load Temperature ( F.) 201

3 Hammer-Capsue 57.6 Instaation Specifications The instaation requirements isted in the foowing tabes are based on the minimum embedment depth. Adhesive mortar voume per inch is based on the use of carbide tipped masonry bits which meet ANSI Standard B toerances. The combination of capsues to use for various embedment depths is isted in the oad capacity sections which foow. To cacuate the voume of adhesive mortar required for an embedment depth not isted, mutipy the mortar voume per inch from the foowing tabes by the embedment required. Seect a combination of capsues using the capsue mortar voume in cubic inches. When seecting a combination of capsues, use sizes cosest to the diameter of the rod to be used. For exampe, an instaation using 3/4" threaded anchor rod at a 12" embedment requires 3.91 (12 x 0.326) cubic inches of adhesive mortar. Cean the hoe thoroughy with compressed air or bowout bub and nyon brush. Mark the threaded rod or reinforcing bar with the embedment required. The threaded rod or reinforcing bar shoud be free of dirt, grease, oi or any other foreign materia. Check the capsue to be sure it is not damaged and invert severa times at 60 F or above to confirm that a of the resin is in a iquid state, and fowing easiy within the capsue. Insert the capsue into the ceaned anchor hoe. Be carefu to observe the direction of insertion. The arrow on the capsue shoud point toward the bottom of the hoe. Drive the threaded rod or reinforcing bar into the anchor hoe through the capsue unti it is fuy embedded. A 2 pound hammer is recommended. A rotary hammer set in the hammering ony mode and Chem-Stud drive adapters can aso be used. Stop driving immediatey upon reaching the bottom of the anchor hoe. Raw Hammer-Capsue Aow the Hammer-Capsue to cure for specified time before oading anchor. Do not disturb the rod once the materia has begun to set. 202

The capacity of the anchor rod shoud be taken into account in the design of any anchorage. 6 Hammer-Capsue Utimate Load Capacities In Grout Fied Bock The foowing utimate oads are based on tests conducted using threaded rods instaed in a wa constructed from C-90 hoow bock fied with fine grout. The embedment depths were based on the use of a singe capsue. Experience has shown that the consistency of grout fied bock varies widey. The capacities isted in this tabe shoud be used as a guide. The anchor hoes shoud be prepared foowing the standard instructions with the foowing exceptions. Anchor hoes shoud be dried at east 1" deeper than the standard embedment depth to insure proper dispersion of the hardener. Specia care shoud be taken to cean the anchor hoe as a surry of concrete paste tends to form on the was of the anchor hoe when driing under water. Insert the proper size capsue into the anchor hoe. Be sure the capsue is fuy inserted to the bottom of the hoe. Foow the standard instaation instructions for driving the anchor rod used into the capsue. The setting time of the Hammer-Capsue adhesive in submerged appications depends upon the base materia temperature as shown in Section Laboratory tests and fied experience have shown that a decrease of 30 to 40% in the utimate tension oad capacity can be expected for a Hammer-Capsue anchor which is instaed under water. The design professiona shoud incude this reduction in his cacuations. If the tension capacities are critica, a job site test is recommended Instaation Of Anchors Overhead Prior to instaing adhesive anchors overhead or in was, consut with the governing buiding authority to determine the requirements for fire safety guideines. The effect of eevated temperature on the Hammer- Capsue adhesive is shown in Section The Hammer-Capsue system can be used for the instaation of threaded anchor rod overhead. The anchor hoes shoud be prepared foowing the standard instructions with the foowing exceptions. After the anchor hoe is dried and ceaned, insert the proper size capsue into the hoe. For the 3/8" to 1" sizes, seect the proper size anchor sea pug and insert it into the hoe unti the rim of the pug is fuy seated against the base materia. Be sure the hoe is deep enough to accept both the capsue and the pug. Foowing the standard instaation instructions, drive the anchor rod through the cross cut opening of the anchor sea pug into the capsue. An aternate method is to use a piece of duct tape or simiar materia to hod the capsue in pace prior to driving the anchor rod into the hoe. If this method is used, it wi be necessary to hod the anchor rod in pace unti the adhesive ges Suggested Specification The adhesive used sha be a two part capsue type system containing an acryic epoxy resin. The ower portion of the capsue sha contain the resin in which quartz aggregate sha be suspended whie the upper portion of the capsue sha contain a mixture of dibenzoy peroxide hardener and aggregate. Proper mixing of the capsue components sha be accompished by driving straight cut anchor rod into the capsue without any spinning action or specia toos. The capsue used sha have a minimum shef ife of two years. Anchor hoes sha be dried with a bit meeting the requirements of ANSI Standard B and sha be approved by the manufacturer. The adhesive capsue and anchor hardware components sha be instaed according to the manufacturers instructions. Anchor rods (or inserts) sha be manufactured from stee. Hammer-Capsue anchors and the hardware used (except for reinforcing bar) sha be suppied by Powers Fastening, Inc. 205
