3 Suriname: Country information 3 Independent: November 25 th 1975 Capital : Paramaribo Official language : Dutch Land surface : 16.4 million ha ( km2) Population: 530,000 Culture: very diverse population Contribution of forestry: 1.3% Main contributor: Mining sector (Gold, bauxite, crude oil) Forest cover: > 90% Forest occurrences/capita: 28 ha Deforestation rate: 0,02-0,03%

5 5 Background ACTO project ACTO (Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization) Project: Monitoring Forest Cover in the Amazon Region Member countries: Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Suriname, Peru, Venezuela Objectives: Contribution to improved governance on matters related to deforestation, land tenure, land use change and sustainable forest management; Provide real time information about the extension and the condition of the forest cover to the ACTO Member Countries.
