7 NREL DoD Support Activities Highlights Primary Federal and DoD requirements E.O : Reduce energy use intensity by 30% by 2015 as compared to 2003 baseline EPAct 2005: 7.5% of electrical energy consumption from renewables by 2013 NDAA 2008: 25% of domestic energy production from renewables by 2025 New E.O. with enhanced requirements expected NREL DoD support activities funding Support provided by DOE FEMP (DoD is primary FEMP customer) Work for Others agreements directly with the Services National Renewable Energy Laboratory
8 DoD-DOE Initiative: Net Zero Energy Installation (NZEI) Activity NZEI definition - A Military installation that produces as much energy on or near the installation, as it consumes in its buildings and facilities. Objective - Create a repeatable template for planning and developing net zero energy installations Process NZEI Task Force (coordination and oversight) DoD (OSD I&E, Air Force, Army, Marines, Navy) DOE FEMP/NREL Demonstrate (implement) systems perspective at pilot sites for each of the Services Implementation (systems approach) Efficient retrofits Efficient new buildings On-site RE generation Electric grid options (distribution microgrid-energy security, Smart Grid) Fleet (fuel efficiency, electric vehicle options) National Renewable Energy Laboratory

11 Navy/Marine Corps Renewable Energy Strategic Plan Development Naval Facilities Engineering Service Center/NREL partnership - WFO (3 years, $1.3M)) Objective: Navy-wide prioritization of RE opportunities and implementation support utilizing NREL RE decision support tools Prescreening Analysis tool Initial prioritization of RE project opportunities Navy-wide and across technologies Site-specific factors considered (including incentives) RE sensitivity analysis tool (critical prescreening analysis follow-on capability) Interactive, user sensitivity analysis tool-facilitates ongoing assessment of RE project economics (future RE project economic viability?) Sensitivity factors include (system cost and size, utility rates, utility escalation rates, discount rates, O&M Costs)
