2 Summary The Operational data server for the CAMS Regional Air Quality Service has been implemented for users to benefit from new numerical data facilities. Examples of these are metadata discovery and product downloading. The following is meant for users of the CAMS Regional production, to learn how to get around these new services and take advantage of the new features. 4 1 The CAMS Regional Air Quality production context : CAMS (Copernicus Atmospheric Monitoring Services) is a program incorporated within the framework of european program Copernicus which aims to provide Europe with an independent operational capacity to monitore the Earth's atmosphere. As part of CAMS program, global and regional services are offered in order to ensure UV radiation and atmospheric composition monitoring, stratospheric ozon forecasting and air quality on the European and global scales. This CAMS Regional Air Quality production, in the field of numerical data, provides products concerning the concentration of the main atmospheric pollutants in the lowest atmospheric layers. This production is based on numerical air quality models developed in Europe. These model forecasts and analyses are combined via an ensemble approach, that provides on average better estimates of air pollutant concentrations than the individual models. 2 The Partners involved in CAMS Regional Air Quality production : 2.1. European Aeroallergen Network EAN which performs Europe-wide monitoring of aeroallergens in the atmosphere. 3 The Input data for CAMS Regional Air Quality production : 3.1. Input data from partners models : In order to produce a multi-model ensemble forecasting system, partners provides the following data : Forecast data from partners : About Comments : Type of partner Air quality and atmospheric composition forecast hourly from their forecasts own model. Period of forecasts Forecasts covering a 4-day period. Species concerned by partner models forecasts : Essential species : nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), PM10, PM2.5, ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO), Species of pollutants Particulate Matter (PM10 and PM2.5). Additional species : NMVOC (non methane volatile organic composant), PANs (family of Peroxyacetyl nitrate), NO (nitrogen monoxide) et NH3 (amonia). Analysis data from partners : Several characteristics of analysis provided by the partner models : About Type of partner analysis Comments : Air quality and atmospheric composition analysed hourly from their own model. The Input data from Environmental Agencies : European Environmental Agency provides observations coming from the air quality monitoring stations of several European countries. These observations are hourly observed on the surface level. The provided species are : ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulphur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and particulate matters PM10 and PM2.5 for the previous day. 9 The forecasts are prepared in co-operation with European Aeroallergen Network EAN, which performs Europe-wide monitoring of aeroallergens in the atmosphere Several characteristics of partner models Some aspects concerning technical characteristics of partner models : All models data cover the same domain MACC-Europe defined by the following geographic bounding box : 24.95W/49.95W/30.05N/69.95N All models have the same spatial resolution on a regular latitude x longitude grid of 0.1x0.1 degree. All models use the same information for the meteorological parameters (from ECWMF weather global operational system) All models use the same boundary conditions for chemical species (from CIFS global production from ECMWF global production ) All models use the same emissions from CAMS emissions (for anthropic emissions over Europe and for biomass burning). All models analyses are provided by assimilating observations of the previous day, obtained from EAA. However, each model has its own data assimilation system. 4 The Multi-Model Ensemble production 4.1. The principle User Guide: CAMS Regional Air Quality Data Server 9

10 The ensemble approach in CAMS Regional Air Quality production is based on a multimodel approach. Basically, the provided forecasts and analyses are combined to produce multi-model ensemble forecasts or analyses. This approach provides on average better estimates of air pollutant concentrations than the individual models. The current method used for estimation of pollutants concentration is based on a statistical parameter median. To determine the estimated concentration for one pollutant on a specific grid point, the Multi-Model Ensemble takes the median of the seven values of partner models for that grid point The report of production: Indicator of nominal/degraded mode The Multi-Model Ensemble is produced every morning. However, one or several individual productions may be occasionally missing for the computation of the ENSEMBLE. The reason for this is that the provision of the input may be late, compared to the set timelimit. In such a case, the quality of the ENSEMBLE will not be optimal. To keep track of possible deteriorations in the ENSEMBLE quality owing to a lower number of available models, a report is issued every day for the various forecasts and analyses validity times. More specifically, at every forecast hour: If there is less than 4 partner models available for the Multi-Ensemble production, a warning is displayed in the report, User Guide: CAMS Regional Air Quality Data Server 10

11 If none of the 7 models is available, then the Multi-Model Ensemble is replaced by the hourly forecast produced the day before for the matching validity time (except if it is not available, in such a case a copy of the Ensemble production 24hours before is done), and a warning is displayed in the report. If the production of the Multi-Model Ensemble fails for some other reason: a warning informing the users of the critical state of production is mentionned. Note : The report keeping track of how Multi-Model Ensemble analyses and forecasts have been produced is available on the data server (see user case#2 in part 6.1.2) and on the CAMS website in the DATA DOWNLOAD section (for both online data and archives). 5 The CAMS Regional Air Quality dataserver - General points 5.1. About the thematic scope The regional air quality production is based on seven state-of-the-art numerical air quality models developed in Europe: CHIMERE by INERIS (France), EMEP by MET Norway (Norway), EURAD-IM by University of Cologne (Germany), LOTOS-EUROS by KNMI (The Netherlands), MATCH by SMHI (Sweden), MOCAGE by Météo-France (France) and SILAM at FMI (Finland). The seven model forecasts and analyses are combined via an ensemble approach, that provides on average better estimates of air pollutant concentrations than the individual models. As a user of the Regional Air Quality Data Server, you may find or discover metadata concerning air quality and atmospheric composition. You may also download the data provided you are registered. 12 Forecasts and analyses of the seven models used in the Multi-Model Ensemble approach. Reports on whether the Ensemble production is nominal or not. And a few others These products are available in a large European domain at a 0.1x0.1 resolution for: different species : Ozone, Sulfur Dioxide, Nitrogen Dioxide, Carbon monoxide, PM10, PM2.5, birch pollen, grass pollen, olive pollen and others. Pollen data are available during a specific period depending on the type of pollen. different levels: from surface to 5000m. different formats: GRIB edition 2, NetCDF, txt. The available species, levels and formats vary from one model to another, and with the type of product you are looking for About Data Server Access There are two different ways to access the Regional data server. The new facilities The new Regional Air Quality Data Server offers a range of brand new services : 1-1- Access to the catalogue of metadata from the regional Air Quality production, using the Data Server search engine. Please : Please have a look at Chapter 6 for further information 2- Metadata discovery to get insights into products. All metadata are ISO19139 compliant. Users can discover elements of these metadata via the Data Server Interface or in XML format. Please : Please have a look at Chapter 6 for further informations. 3- Direct data access, to directly download the product you are interested in. Note that prior registration is required to benefit from this feature. Please have a look at chapter 7 for further information. 4- Subscription to a product: If you wish to use a product on a regular basis, you may subscribe to it, and it will be delivered to you according to your preferences. 16 6 Data Server facilities Catalogue of metadata 6.1. Making a request on the Data Server & Use cases The search engine The regional air quality Data Server uses the Geo-Network search engine. This search engine allows you to search on the following fields of metadata : Title / Abstract / Keywords / Location / Free text In each search field, the user can write expressions using the following grammar : string: search metadata having "string"' in field string1 string2: equivalent to string1 and string2 "string1 string2": search metadata having the "string1 string2" in field string1 and string2: search metadata having both "string1" and "string2" in field string1 or string2: search metadata having either 'string1' or "string2" in field string1 not string2: search metadata having "string1" but not "string2" in field Keywords and operators (and, or not) are not case-sensitive Use cases Use case 1: A user wants to discover metadata of the Multi-Model Ensemble forecasts for ozone, on the 1000m level. 1- The user must identify the keywords describing the product he/she wants to discover. 17 2 The user needs to input the keywords in the home page section entitled "WHAT?". He/she can optimise his query by submitting a time dependency or a specific data format (for example Grib2 or as dependency time : 00 UTC) Use case 2: A user wants to discover what type of report is produced along with MultiModel Ensemble production. 1- The user first needs to identify the keywords describing the product he/she wants to discover. In this particular case, he/ she could try : Ensemble report. 2- The user should type in the keywords in the home page section entitled "WHAT?". 3- He/She gets a list of products matching the different words. 18 Note : The search engine is not date-sensitive. For example, a user who wants to get MultiModel Ensemble for the reference time : UTC should not include time dependency in the time dependency in the query, otherwise no product will be matching. The option to choose the reference time will be proposed at the final request for download step Discovering the inner elements of metadata CAMS50 metadata are ISO19139-compliant. Once you have identified a product likely to meet your needs, learn more about it by taking a look at the metadata description. Click on the "Eye" icon to display the metadata elements, or on the XML icon for an XML format schema. 7 The Data Server facilities data access 7.1. 19 And register on the data server. Registering implies that you accept the CAMS data license terms. How to register? Fill in the form available on the data server page: After that, you will receive a username and password, allowing you to download data. Note that these login and password will not grant you access to the whole regional production, since some products are restricted to specific user categories Download request mode & use case User Guide: CAMS Regional Air Quality Data Server 19

20 Use case: a user wants to get the numerical data matching a product he/she is interested in. 1- The user must be registered and logged in. 2 - After finding the relevant product, he/she needs to click on the "Request" button. 3- He/she should then choose the date and reference time, which will bring up the list of available products in the "Product instance" category. 21 4- The user selects an item out of the available products displayed in the list, and clicks on the "Save" button, leading him/her to a summary tab. 5- The user should click on the "Refresh" icon (double arrow), possibly several times. When a green indicator appears, he/she can submit the download. 6- The user is led to the OpenWIS Staging Post. Clicking on the product will start the download Download Subscribe mode & use case Use case: a registered user wants to subscribe to a specific product and choose the delivery mode. 1- The user must be registered and logged in. 2- After finding the relevant product, he/she needs to click on the the Subscribe button. 22 3- He/she should choose a reference time for the product, as well as the time of delivery. Either on arrival, meaning that the product will be sent as soon as it is available (highly recommended), or... (useful when the user wants to schedule his/her own production line). 4- The user selects the "Primary dissemination" tab, and fills in the Public dissemination form, in order to receive the product by Ftp transfer.
