Vehicle Remote Sensing - Next Generation - Results Portable Emissions Measurement Systems International Conference & Workshop MARCH 26, 2015
A new, patented remote sensing system for vehicle exhaust, based on NASA satellite technology
Genesis of EDAR: Active Sensing of CO2 Emissions Nights, Days and Seasons (ASCENDS) NASA's Active Sensing of CO2 Emissions over Nights, Days and Season ( ASCENDS ) satellite is a laser-based differential absorption LIDAR for CO2 remote sensing. We are at a distance of 10 meters as opposed to 700 km (Sun-synchronous orbit) HEAT EDAR patents derived from modified/engineering maturation from NASA concept.
S -> Signal, C -> Instrument variability η -> Detector efficiency β -> Atmospheric Scattering Coefficient T -> Absorption of interfering molecules σ -> Absorption Cross Section ρ -> Density Differential Absorption Spectroscopy (DAS) Nightmare Terms The following information is confidential and proprietary to Hager Environmental and Atmospheric Technologies(H.E.A.T.). This information should not be copied, distributed or transmitted without the written consent of H.E.A.T. 4
S -> Signal, C -> Instrument variability η -> Detector efficiency β -> Atmospheric Scattering Coefficient T -> Absorption of interfering molecules σ -> Absorption Cross Section ρ -> Density Differential Absorption Spectroscopy (DAS) Waking up from a bad dream, leads to one simple equation The following information is confidential and proprietary to Hager Environmental and Atmospheric Technologies(H.E.A.T.). This information should not be copied, distributed or transmitted without the written consent of H.E.A.T. 5
Infrared Absorption of CO showing the narrow lines. NDIR or filter based absorption is 2%, DAS absorption 80%! O n Off NDIR or filter based measurement is the average absorption of this spectrum which is 2%
What is EDAR?
What EDAR sees
What we see with EDAR 3-D image of entire plume
Key RSD Differentiators Lasers vs Filters
2-Dimensional Display View Truck and Semi-Trucks
PEMS-EDAR Validation Study-Feb Cold start vehicles A 2004 Yukon is parked in front of the EDAR unit, above not pictured. EDAR lasers are scanning across the exhaust plume, behind the Yukon. A large fan in front of blows fresh air. The tailpipe probe of the PEMS unit is shown inserted into the tailpipe. Shows a 3-D representation of a one-minute scan. The y-axis is the scan number and the x- axis is the samples number. The z-axis represents optical mass.
PEMS-EDAR Validation Study-Feb CO NO HC
Connecticut Study
Average NO Emissions for Connecticut (unmanned) The higher CO readings were more likely on the older vehicles
Average NO Emissions for Connecticut (unmanned) The higher CO readings were more likely on the older vehicles
The higher CO readings were more likely on the older vehicles
Estimates of Instantaneous Hot Running Fleet Mass Emissions Evaporative emissions is the escape of raw gasoline vapors from a vehicle. A charcoal canister traps gasoline fumes and reinsert them in to the fuel line. Broken charcoal canister allow fumes discharge especially during refueling. EDAR lasers are directed underneath the vehicle
EPA Study: Evaporative Emissions Evaporative emissions is the escape of raw gasoline vapors from a vehicle. A charcoal canister traps gasoline fumes and reinsert them in to the fuel line. Broken charcoal canister allow fumes discharge especially during refueling. EDAR lasers are directed underneath the vehicle
EPA Study: Evaporative Emissions EDAR lasers are directed underneath the vehicle Tires
Running Evaporative Emissions & New Gases The not all the HC is coming from the tailpipe, as seen the bottom part of the first panel to the right. This must be running evaporative emissions. New gases include H 2 O, CH 4, C 2 H 6 and C 2 H 4. CH 4, C 2 H 6 and C 2 H 4 can be used to augment total HC measurements. The following information is confidential and proprietary to Hager Environmental and Atmospheric Technologies(H.E.A.T.). This information should not be copied, distributed or transmitted without the written consent of H.E.A.T. 21
All Lasers Measure Diesel Truck PM from the off Measurement The baseline measurement or λ off considered by itself is independent of the gas measurement. What effects the baseline measurement is broad absorption features such as particulate matter. Diesel truck PM can be seen at the rear of the trailer of a tracker trailer diesel truck. The following information is confidential and proprietary to Hager Environmental and Atmospheric Technologies(H.E.A.T.). This information should not be copied, distributed or transmitted without the written consent of H.E.A.T. 22
Particulate Matter Single-jet Atomizer Model 9302, TSI 2.62e+06 #/cm 3, GMD = 58.6nm, GSD=1.9 Baseline or λ off Measurments The following information is confidential and proprietary to Hager Environmental and Atmospheric Technologies(H.E.A.T.). This information should not be copied, distributed or transmitted without the written consent of H.E.A.T. 23
EDAR s Footprint, reads license plate, measure speed and acceleration EDAR sits on a pole above the road Reflective tape is used on road to enhance reflectivity EDAR capture the license plate as well as two images of the passing car Snow plows can damage our reflective tape. Simple crosswalk paint is thick enough to protect protect our tape. Speed and acceleration through Vehicle profiles Vehicle profiles for vehicle typing
Summary The Benefits of having EDAR as your Remote Sensing Device: No Calibrations/Unmanned Multi-lane deployment High sensitivity and accuracy Small foot print/stealthy Operates 24/7 Measures both HD and LD with same device Can read exhaust temperature DAS is much more sensitive than NDIR or filter based systems!
